One of the strangest sagas of the offseason continues, as the New York Red Bulls front office drama takes another twist.

Denis Hamlett, assistant coach under Jesse Marsch, appears to be operating as the team’s Sporting Director, with current director Ali Curtis’ status up in the air, reports Metro . Curtis departed the MLS Combine in Los Angeles in a hurry earlier this month, and questions over his job status have only grown. Metro reported that several MLS executives are being directed to Hamlett over player queries rather than Curtis.

Questions remain in the air, and they’ll only grow until word officially comes from the Red Bulls, but reports state that Curtis could be in the process of negotiating his exit from the team.

GALAXY SIGN ALESSANDRINI TO DP DEAL

As has been rumored in recent days, the LA Galaxy have filled one of their vacant DP slots with a young, talented European midfielder.

The team has officially announced the signing of French midfielder, and former Marseille player, Romain Alessandrini. The 27 year old winger joins from the Ligue 1 side on a DP contract for the Galaxy, leaving just one vacant spot to fill in that regard, and continues MLS’ recent trend of targeting younger stars in their prime. Alessandrini has thrived with Marseille, scoring 11 goals and 9 assists since joining the club in 2014.

“We are very excited to add a talented, attacking winger like Romain to our roster,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Peter Vagenas. “He is in the prime of his career and has spent time playing at a top division in Europe. Romain will play a valuable role in our team’s success this season and we look forward to him joining the team ahead of the 2017 season.”

TFC ADD DEFENSE WITH MAVINGA SIGNING

Toronto FC have also added a Frenchman of their own to help shore up their back line.

The team announced the signing of French-DR Congolese defender Chris Mavinga on Tuesday. The former Rubin Kazan player has most recently played for Stade Reims and Troyes on loan in Ligue 1, and came up through the Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool youth systems, the latter of whom signed him to his first professional contract. The 6’1 defender is only 25 and has featured previously for the French National Teams up to the U-21 level before making his first senior cap with the DR Congo Men’s Team.

“Adding a player like Chris brings depth to our backline. He is a defender that played in the French national youth system which is recognized around the world as a leader in player development,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “We are very excited to add Chris to Toronto FC. His experience at the youth and senior levels will be a welcomed addition to the club.”

JOSEF MARTINEZ NEARING ATLANTA UNITED SIGNATURE

Long-rumored to be acquiring another big name, Atlanta United is reportedly nearing another exciting signing this offseason.

The team has been reported to be nearing an acquisition of Torino striker Josef Martinez. The 23 year old Venezuelan appears to have taken another step closer, as he is on his way stateside, potentially to sign with his new team. Martinez has featured in 58 matches for Torino since joining the Serie A side in 2014, scoring 7 goals, while also making 37 appearances and scoring 9 goals for Venezuela.

While nothing is official yet, a trip across the Atlantic bodes well for Atlanta fans.

FC DALLAS’ ULLOA SET TO MISS ONE MONTH

Bad news for FC Dallas fans ahead of the team’s preseason tour, as they’ll be missing a key component.

Midfielder Victor Ulloa, who has been a key fixture for FCD over the past few seasons, is reportedly set to miss a month of action after being diagnosed with a sports hernia on Tuesday. The injury puts his availability for the start of the season in question, as it sits just over a month away, during which time Ulloa will be forced to sit out.

  1. I’m surprised to see the Galaxy refer to Allesandrini as a winger. My admittedly very limited exposure to OM, he played more in the center of the pitch. Then again, Lletget too is a center half that the Galaxy have tried to convert to an edge player. Should be interesting.

Best assessment of Allesandrini so far: my son says he has a 77 player rating on FIFA. “Not too shabby,” says my son. I guess that’s as reliable a scouting report as any.

    • Strange days indeed in Red Bull-land. Curtis’ tenure was successful, no doubt,…but he shouldn’t beat his chest too much. I hope he doesn’t think he is the guy who came up with the idea of building a first team through youth teams. That concept, as everyone knows, is as old as the hills. Furthermore, other MLS teams have had success with modest payrolls.
