The Philadelphia Union appear to have added a key piece in building on their playoff appearance in 2016 with a new midfield signing.

Bosnian midfielder Haris Medunjanin has been signed by the team to a two year deal with an option for year three, the team announced. The team used TAM to buy down the contract for the former Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder below the DP threshold. Aside from Tel Aviv, Medunjanin has appeared for a plethora of European clubs, including AZ Alkmaar, where he made his professional debut, Valladolid in La Liga, and several others.

“We are extremely happy to add a player of Haris’ caliber. Having played at the highest levels of our game, he brings both quality and experience to our midfield,” Philadelphia Union sporting director Earnie Stewart said. “We’re anxious for Haris to join our group as we continue to prepare for the start of the season.”

RED BULLS SIGN CENTERBACK

The New York Red Bulls enter 2017 on the heels of a very successful 2016 that saw them finish atop the Eastern Conference for the second straight year. If there were any weaknesses on the roster, the defense might’ve been one, and they’ve started out 2017 by addressing it immediately.

The team announced on Tuesday the signing of Cameroonian center back Hassan Ndam, who joins the club from Rainbow FC Bamenda in Cameroon. Ndam is a staggeringly large 18 year old, standing at a massive 6’4, 195 pounds, and has appeared for Cameroon at multiple youth levels, currently with the U-20s at the U-20 African Cup of Nations.

“We are pleased to add Hassan,” said Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch. “He has great physical attributes and a good sense of the game. He is young, but we think he shows promise.”

SOUNDERS SIGN SWEDISH MIDFIELDER SVENSSON

Adding to the crush of signings occurring on deadline day, the Seattle Sounders have acquired some additional midfield talent as well.

The team announced the signing of Swedish defensive midfielder Gustav Svensson, formerly of Chinese club Guangzhou R&F, and he has already joined the team in Tucson, Arizona for its preseason training. Svensson was let go from the club due to changes in the Chinese Football Association’s foreign players rules. The Sounders reaped the benefit of the rules change, adding the 29 year old to their talented midfield.

“We’re excited to add Gustav to our roster,” said Sounders General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “He brings a wealth of experience, a track record of success and versatility to our team and we’re eager to see how he impacts our squad in 2017.”

FENERBAHCE FORWARD EMENIKE LINKED TO MLS TEAMS

Though no deal has been confirmed, Fenerbahce forward Emmanuel Emenike has been linked to MLS teams as his departure from Turkey seems imminent.

According to multiple Turkish reports, manager Dick Advocaat has deemed the Nigerian forward surplus and is eager to get his wages off the team’s bill. After declining moves to Czech side Sparta Prague and Russian teams Lokomotiv Moscow and Rubin Kazan, he has reportedly given his agent the go-ahead to negotiate with MLS teams.

The forward has been linked to three MLS sides, the New York Red Bulls and two other unnamed groups.

TIMBERS DEFENDER AROKOYO GOES DOWN WITH ACHILLES INJURY

Some bad news for the Portland Timbers, who will reportedly be searching for a new defender after losing one to a potential season-ending injury.

Timbers coach Caleb Porter told the media after training on Monday that defender Arokoyo collided with another player and went down with an apparent ankle or Achilles injury. It has since been reported that the injury is likely season-ending and that the Timbers will need a new starting-quality defender ahead of the start of the season.
