This weekend’s soccer on TV

Good morning folks. Apologies for getting this weekend’s TV schedule out late but I had the ride home from hell yesterday making the trip back from D.C. to Jersey.

This is the last weekend of the English Premier League season, which means the title, European places and relegation spots will be determined on Sunday. The only bad news about the schedule is that all 10 league matches begin at the same time, meaning only two will be airing live (three if you count Fulham at Portsmouth, which will be on pay per view, and who isn’t buying that game?).

Here are this weekend’s Top Five Matches on TV:

1. Fulham at Portsmouth. No, the EPL title won’t be on the line here but the task is clear for Fulham. Win and they survive another season in the EPL. Lose and they very likely are relegated. You can’t miss that sort of drama.

2. Manchester United at Wigan. Man U wins and they are the champions again. Tie or lose and the Red Devils likely open the door for Chelsea to take the crown.

3.  Mallorca at Barcelona. The post-Rijkaard era begins with Barcelona needing a win to lock up third place in La Liga. Yes, you read that right.

4. New York Red Bulls at Los Angeles Galaxy. The last time these teams played they combined for nine goals. And that was without Abel Xavier playing. Imagine what happens tonight with Xavier going up against Juan Pablo Angel and Jozy Altidore?

5. Newcastle at Everton. Can Tim Howard and Everton clinch a UEFA Cup berth or can Newcastle spoil the part and give Aston Villa hope?

  1. Greg Perry,

It’s a nail bitrer now in France. Bordeaux is only 2 pts away from Lyon for the title.

  2. The 9 goals were the August match up between the Galaxy and Red Bulls, the end of the season match was a 1-1 draw. So a minor correction the last time the last time these teams met 2 goals were scored.

I still expect a good match since both Beck’s and Angel should play, but who will shine the two american stars Jozy and Landycakes or the DP’s?

  3. Thanks Barry Jive for that Direct Kick info. Was starting to get bummed out thinking I wouldn’t be able to watch it.

  4. The Galaxy-Red Bull matching is on Direct Kick tonight.

This is the first year where they’ve had the majority of HDNet exclusive games also available on Direct Kick.

  5. Good news! Beasley was on the bench for Rangers, even though he didn’t get in. Here’s hoping he gets some playing time for the UEFA Cup Finals on Wednesday.

  6. 2 goals in 3 minutes for Bremen. GK saved a penalty, then headed in during the scrum afterwards. 2 min’s later – total defense breakdown and it’s now 5-0 with 8 min’s to go.

  7. re: groovester. Italy is actually a much poorer country than

France and England. You can really tell a difference when driving between the two. The Italians just don’t keep things as nice as we are used to.

Anyway, Ives, I thought Josy was staying home. Anyway, I figured he was licking his chops over LA’s backline, but I’m not the one who said he needed rest

  8. So is Jozy playing or not? There was an entry a couple of days saying he would probably not play, now you think he is playing? I’m confused.

  9. Bremen’s up 1-0 in the 16th minute.

I actually get GolTV here in the RV, but I’m so used to *not* having it that I keep forgetting it’s there.

  10. anyone know the average attendance figures for the various european leagues. The stadiums in Serie A seem to be half empty most of the time. Plus the stadiums look like they are in crap condition, almost third world-esque. Some still even have the fence barriers between fans and pitch. Plus the FSC announcers suck, sounds like their voices are piped in like an old spaghetti western.

The spanish and german league games seem to be near capacity and the stadiums seem to be in better shape.

  11. It’s quite the boring Soccer Saturday for those of us for whom MLS games are on Sunday mornings.

Interesting happenings in the Russian League. After Zenit became the first non-Moscow team in over a decade to win the championship last year, Rubin Kazan (Damani Ralph’s old club) are looking to, at least temporarily, go 11 points clear at the top of the table, roughly one-third of the way through the season. Champions League action in Kazan in 2009-2010 would be a blast.

The only problem is they’re currently losing away to Spartak Nalchik 1-0 in minute 38.

  12. Ives Colorado Houston is at 8:30 pm according to MLSNet.

Wonder what kind of crowd an 8:30 am would get at Roberts stadium?
