It was a big day for college soccer yesterday in the ACC. Four of the top sides, all ranked in the top 25, needed to dig deep to overcome weaker opponents on their respective home turf. The University of Maryland eked out a 1-0 win over St. Peter's, a small Jesuit school in New Jersey. The Terps out shot St. Peter's 29-7, and played most of the game a man up, but only managed a lone goal through midfielder Jason Herrick.
Down south, North Carolina needed extra time to get a 2-1 win against the less heralded East Tennessee St. A 98th minute strike off the boot of sophomore midfielder Billy Schuler kept the Tar Heels undefeated at 5-0-1. Interstate rivals Duke also won in the extra stanza, grabbing a 109th minute winner in a 2-1 win against UNC Wilmington. Rounding out the overtime winners in the ACC was the University of Virginia, beating George Washington by the same 2-1 score.
For a more obscure school to keep an eye on, check out the University of Maryland (Baltimore County). The Bulls are off to a hot 8-0-0 start after beating Loyola 1-0 Tuesday. They boast the nation's leading scorer, sophomore forward Andrew Bulls, who has nine goals from seven games. UMBC has yet to crack the NSCAA Top 25, but if they continue like this they won't go unnoticed.
