It was a big day for college soccer yesterday in the ACC. Four of the top sides, all ranked in the top 25, needed to dig deep to overcome weaker opponents on their respective home turf. The University of Maryland eked out a 1-0 win over St. Peter's, a small Jesuit school in New Jersey. The Terps out shot St. Peter's 29-7, and played most of the game a man up, but only managed a lone goal through midfielder Jason Herrick.
Down south, North Carolina needed extra time to get a 2-1 win against the less heralded East Tennessee St. A 98th minute strike off the boot of sophomore midfielder Billy Schuler kept the Tar Heels undefeated at 5-0-1. Interstate rivals Duke also won in the extra stanza, grabbing a 109th minute winner in a 2-1 win against UNC Wilmington. Rounding out the overtime winners in the ACC was the University of Virginia, beating George Washington by the same 2-1 score.
For a more obscure school to keep an eye on, check out the University of Maryland (Baltimore County). The Bulls are off to a hot 8-0-0 start after beating Loyola 1-0 Tuesday. They boast the nation's leading scorer, sophomore forward Andrew Bulls, who has nine goals from seven games. UMBC has yet to crack the NSCAA Top 25, but if they continue like this they won't go unnoticed.

Ives, how do we bring scholarships to men’s college soccer in the Big 12 Pac 10 SEC football powerhouse regions? Can you imagine an NCAA tourney with Texas, Florida, Oregon, and all the others? It would change the game of soccer in this country forever.
It’s still okay to mention the Bulls.
The #3 USF Bulls extended their home unbeaten streak to a solid 2 years (23-0-3 or something like that) with a win over #21 Notre Dame.
It’s also okay to mention the Big East because unlike college football, there are several teams ranked now. Second most challenging conference behind the ACC
GO BULLS!
I remember Andrew Bulls from last summer…hes the kid who scored that 45-yard rocket into the upper-90 in the U-18 USDA Championship on ESPN2.
I don’t know who else the Retrievers have beaten so far, but they absolutely punked VA Tech earlier this month. Not exactly an ACC power, but still. UMBC has speed and cojones. They’re pretty fun to watch.
UMBC is the Retrievers dude
St. Peter’s just beat Columbia 2-0 prior to Maryland. Columbia was a better team and all, but St. Peter’s knows how to stay in the game. Not surprised they only lost 0-1.
Also,
Off topic and I know this is a Travis CLark piece but Ives,
We need a Yanks Abroad forum for today so I don’t have to go to BS and discuss the matches today.
Friedel, Guzan, Lichaj vs. Cardiff City.
Dempsey vs. Man City
Jozy vs. Timmy Howard
Gooch may see time vs. Udinese
Cooper vs. Hertha Berlin
Feilhaber, White, Adu and others could see some time.
Is the BigTen Network still showing matches?
ANyone know?
I watch about 3 matches a week last year and I haven’t seen one this year.
UMBC is the Retrievers, not the Bulls. Should be interesting to see how they fare in the America East conference. Boston University is a good team (ranked 19th in the nation) and Binghamton is usually always tough. The teams UMBC has beaten outside of Virginia Tech and Loyola aren’t that good.
Don’t forget NC State (alma mater of Tab Ramos, Roy Lassiter, and Pablo Mastroeni) finally awakening from a 10-year hibernation to threaten the ACC as well… tied UM 1-1 this past weekend and 4-1-1 on the season so far.
U Made a Bad Choice or U Must Be Crazy are the retrievers (not the bulls), and also not to be confused with their fellow baltimore dogs the Loyola greyhounds, whom they defeated yesterday.
The game in College Park last night was nothing but poor finishing for the Terps. There were three legitimate numbers+ breakaways for Maryland in the second half that ended in corner or goalkicks (which, by the way, UMD had TWELVE goal kicks: absurd), and so many shots that went just wide or just over, in addition to a great number that went way wide or way over. The referee was atrocious (per the norm), not calling a blatant handball in Maryland’s box, giving out extremely late cards… all in all for the Terps it was a poor showing for such sheer domination; they really should’ve been scored on. They did this last year, too, though, so I’m not all that worried.
I try to look past games like these. Doug Rodkey was out with an undeserved red card @ NC State on Saturday and Casey Townsend was out for unknown reasons.
UCSB beat the Mexico U17s 2-1 last night. The Gauchos played mostly reserves. There was a great atmosphere….8500 with a 50/50 breakdown.
