The streets of South Africa are flooded with locals and visitors from all over the world as the 2010 FIFA World Cup prepares to kick off today.
The scenes are festive throughout the country, and Johannesburg is a sea of international humanity as fans of all colors look to take part in today's day-long party.
The World Cup kicks off today with host South Africa taking on Mexico. Frances faces Argentina later today in the second match of the day.
I will be looking to provide live commentary on today's South Africa-Mexico match so stay tuned for that. For now, please feel free to share your thoughts on today's festivities in the comments section below.
Enjoy the action and all of the sights from here in South Africa.
Football broadcast needs a constant display of the game clock and score.
Obviously the festivities are getting to Ives 🙂
Enjoyable game. SA deserved to win, they had more real chances and probably deserved a penalty. Mexico defenders looked all kinds of vulnerable to any kind of SA attack.
wildchild,
Sorry Mexico did not win. So nothing for you? 🙂
Constantly searching for any hope for the USMNT against England, and am getting inspired by South Africa and their speed on the counter today.
what a strike.
sign him up Fergie!
Aso, aso, aso… talk to me, Jesus!!
my predictions are going as planned
Just gotta know guys who either called off of work or took the day off today! Cause I know I did!
And now, all the toilets in Mexico flush simultaneously, causing a tsunami in the gulf and dispersing the BP oil spill.
I can’t believe Martin Tyler didn’t correct his partner on that offsides call!
LEARN THE OFFSIDE RULE! Christ. Not the last opponent. THE SECOND LAST. If the GOALKEEPER IS UP, you need TWO DEFENDERS BETWEEN THE GOAL LINE. CORRECT CALL. The fact that the announcers don’t know this is flat out EMBARRASSING.
Offsides is when you go past the second to last defender, and since the goalie was so far out, there was only one defender, the guy on the end line. So it was offsides, I’m pretty sure.
Two observations:
– the ball is definitely impacting play. Why do they f* with something as important as the ball?
– hating the vuvuzela sounds as much as I thought I would. With head phones (at work), it’s driving me crazy!
the offside call was spot on, but the center official needs to let them play more, imo.
thats what I would have thought as well… I mean surely he wears and ear piece and the moment the dark shade showing offside by the TV production company was right behind the goalkeeper clearly showing it was a great call… I mean Ekoko played for years and years in the EPL… surely he knows the rule…
Will someone in the booth tell him he’s dead wrong?
…and now we all switch to the in-game thread…
Yeah I can’t believe he’s still on about that. Must have mentioned the fact that Mexico should be up 1-0 about 5 times by now. You’d think someone would have slipped him a note or something.
Martin is good, but the color guy is calling a game he wants to see.
Very close by SA.
This is correct. I can’t believe that the commentators are so wrong.
It was actually a fairly easy call. I would expect a teenage AR to make that one with ease.
I normally stand in solidarity with my Mexican brothers… but damn, that video is sweet!
Oops, my bad. Didn’t originally see the keeper come out.
I can’t believe some of you don’t know the offside rule… Shocked that Martin Tyler has not stepped in and corrected his color man.
i agree with sam. not even close.
sorry, behind (or even with) the player, not the ball
he was offsides. there have to be two defensive players behind the player, usually the goalkeeper is one of those two.
Isnt the the commentator getting it wrong?
A player is in an offside position if he is in his opponents’ half of the field and is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the next to last opponent. The man on the line was the only one in front of him because the keeper was out. Thus, he was offsides.
REALLY EFREM… you dont know the rules????
2 defenders must be between you and the goal line when the ball is played… when the ball was flicked the goalkeeper put him in an offside position…
FANTASTIC REFEREEING
it was offsides, there have to be two players behind the ball, not just a defender
I dislike the Mexico Nat Team as much as anyone, but that call is unexcusable. Hopefully not a sign of more shotty officiating to come.
Yes, it was. There has to be two defenders. The goalkeeper came out. The commentator does not know the rule.
My ESPN color guy can’t see that the goalie put Mexico off-side.
