The San Jose Earthquakes gave their playoff hopes a major boost, while the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC wasted their own chances to scoop up valuable points in this weekend's MLS action.
The Earthquakes overcame defensive injuries to knock off the Los Angeles Galaxy, while FC Dallas extended the longest unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer to 11 games by beating Chivas USA.
Toronto's first MLS at home in more than a year came against New York and allowed San Jose to jump ahead in points to currently give the Western Conference six playoff teams if the season ended today.
Here is a rundown of this weekend's MLS action, with links to all the highlights:
Red Bulls 4, Toronto FC 1
Marquez scores his first MLS goal while TFC commits key blunders to help New York moves closer to playoff berth. HIGHLIGHTS
San Jose Earthquakes 1, Los Angeles Galaxy 0
Despite fielding a short-handed defense, Earthquakes shut out a struggling Galaxy attack to move into playoff position just as Geovanni arrives. HIGHLIGHTS
Columbus Crew 3, Colorado Rapids 1
The Crew dismantles a normally-stingy Rapids defense to keep stranglehold on first in the East and keep Colorado from strengthening its own weak grip on a playoff berth. HIGHLIGHTS
Kansas City Wizards 4, New England Revolution 1
Birahim Diop scores a pair to revive KC's faint playoff hopes and hurt New England's. HIGHLIGHTS
FC Dallas 1, Chivas USA 0
Brek Shea scores again, and the FCD defense posts another shutout, as Dallas extends unbeaten run to 11 matches. HIGHLIGHTS
Houston Dynamo 4, Chicago Fire 3

Which performance impressed you the most this weekend? Who delivered the most disappointing display? Still amazed Brian Ching hit a bicycle kick? Think Kansas City can still make the playoffs?
Share your thoughts below.
Galaxy needs to bring Kenny Cooper back to the league
And Nery Castillo continues to play terribly for the Fire.
Things are looking good for the Quakes, Wondo has a new streak going, Busch is on form, Convey playing great at LB, and Geovanni. Once the backline heals, the Quakes will be a pretty strong opponent in the playoffs.
New York was impressive in Toronto. Marquez getting his first goal, what a strike! Ever since Marquez started suiting up, Tchani’s game seems to have improved.
That Chicago/Houston game was great. Good to see Ching getting a hat trick. And that bicycle kick sure is a goal of the year candidate.
Good soccer in MLS all around this weekend.
Put another shrimp on the barbie!
He’s already been called up once. Stab away my friend.
too soon buddy
The bulls jumped the fence this week and rammed TFC into shock. great game looking forward to the return match vs LA that should be a cracker. Beckham should be playing by then and NY should be clicking on all cylinders.
why?, you really sound dumb.yea, maybe you should just stab yourself in the face.
Nani is an extremely talented player but I think the term “world class” is used too often.
He’s an underachiever in my opinion.
for sure!. he needs to atleast be giving a chance.
Ok, well Nani disregarding this morning’s game. My point was, he isn’t world class but he’s coming along nicely.
Thank god Shea is not a Nani after that horrifying penalty he took.
Would you prefer Kljestan? Shea’s no Nani, but he’s young and could use some experience with the Nats since he’ll probably be in the fold for the next few WC cycles.
how come?
yes. watch the behind the goal cam. the curl on the ball is top notch!
if brek shea gets a call up, i’ll stab myself in the face
Make sure to watch Marquez’s first goal from the behind the goal to appreciate the quality of his strike and the way the ball curves. Just fantastic!
Most impressive performance? The Red Bulls beating Toronto at home and in resounding fashion. What a volley from Marquez and overall team performance!!!
Brek Shea for an October call-up? I vote Yes.
