Chelsea breathed life into their faint title hopes, while also helping open up the English Premier League title race after handing Manchester City their first loss of the season in a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

Frank Lampard came off the bench to convert the game-winning penalty as a Joleon Lescott handball doomed City to their first defeat, which leaves the Premier League leaders just two points ahead of Manchester United.

Daniel Sturridge was the danger man for Chelsea, setting up Raul Meireles' equalizer before drawing the penalty on Lescott, who handled a Sturridge shot in the penalty area. Lampard took the spot kick and beat Joe Hart right up the middle to help Chelsea grab third place in the Premier League.

BUFFON SAVE HELPS JUVE REGAIN FIRST PLACE

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon faced a familiar foe on Monday, as Roma legend Francesco Totti lined up to take a potential equalizing penalty kick against his former World Cup-winning teammate. Buffon saved the penalty to help Juve record a 1-1 draw in Rome that helped his team climb back into first place in Serie A.

Udinese had moved into first place over the weekend, but Juventus pulled even for the season after Giorgio Chiellini's header tied Roma in the second half of Monday's tilt after Daniele DeRossi had given Roma a fifth-minute lead.

Juventus faces Udinese a week from Tuesday, but not before taking on Novara on Sunday.

TOTTENHAM EYE KAKA LOAN

When the summer transfer window closed, there were rumblings that Tottenham came close to landing a high-profile signing, with Kaka a popular name linked to the move. Now, some four months later, the Tottenham-Kaka link is back.

According to the UK Express, Tottenham is trying to secure a loan move for Kaka, who has struggled for playing time with Real Madrid.

ARSENAL LOSE SANTOS FOR THREE MONTHS

Brazilian left back Andre Santos underwent ankle surgery that will keep him sidelined for three months, an injury that could force Arsenal to go shopping for another defender in the January transfer window.

Santos suffered the right ankle injury during Arsenal's Champions League loss to Olympiakos last week. 

GOETZE TO MISS REST OF 2011

Young Borussia Dortmund striker Mario Goetze has been the target of plenty of transfer rumors in recent months, but any clubs interested in landing him soon won't get to see him again this year after he suffered a hamstring tear that will force him to miss the final two games of the year.

Goetze, 18, suffered the injury after coming on as a substitute in Dortmund's recent draw against Kaiserslautern. The draw dropped Dortmund into a tie for second in the Bundesliga with Schalke 04.
