Here we go again.
The world's top rivalry takes center stage when Real Madrid hosts Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals (4 p.m., GOLTV/ESPN3.com), the first of two meetings in a week's time that will determine which club advances to the semifinals.
Ever since Real Madrid captured last year's Copa del Rey final at Barcelona's expense, the Catalan club has owned the heated rivalry. Barcelona topped Madrid in the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League semifinals, outlasted Madrid for the league title, was victorious in the two-legged Spanish SuperCopa at the beginning of the season and enjoyed a comfortable victory in league play last month despite conceding a goal in the first minute.
Even with that, Real Madrid is currently in the driver's seat in La Liga, owning a five-point edge over Barcelona, which has only lost once all season but has been held to recent draws while Madrid has been nearly perfect — save for the loss at home to Barcelona on Dec. 10.
Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, who celebrates his 41st birthday on Wednesday, has elected to start Jose Pinto over Victor Valdes in goal — as is the norm in this competition — and is without the services of Pedro, who has a leg injury. He has called in Barcelona B standouts Jonathan dos Santos and Isaac Cuenca to take places on the gameday squad as well.
Jose Mourinho also has lineup decisions to make, with Sami Khedira out injured, Alvaro Arbeloa out suspended and Angel di Maria just recently returning to training after a thigh injury and not at full fitness.

With you on that, bro’. I feel a big game coming from Ozil, finally breaking his Barca slump. He is in good form now and playing with a lot of confidence…
come on madrid!!!!
That picture really typifies CR and Messi: Ronaldo always trying to look good for the cameras and Messi always working. That is why Messi will go down in history as one of the greatest players ever, while Ronaldo will be remembered as a great player whose reputation superseded his abilities.
Let’s hope all of that talent is showcased and not cancelled out.
There might be some tactical gamesmanship, but the games will feature the top 3 finishers in the Ballon D’or voting and a number of other outstanding players. These two teams scored over 200 goals in competitive games this season. At the moment, they have more flare and skill than any other club in the world.
I like Madrid more than Barca, but the quality of the two teams is just not close enough. Barca is the better team.
You are joking, right?
FYI: Looks like ESPN3.com will be showing the game in Spanish. It’s also on ESPN Deportes on cable in Spanish as well.
if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…
yep. we all know Barca will spank that a$$
Ronaldo has the “SITUATION” face on!! Visca Barca!!
That pic looks like it was photoshopped together.
This game doesnt even excite me any more
Is Kaka even playing for Madrid anymore? I don’t get to watch many games of their’s, but it seems like he’s disappeared .
Hopefully it doesn’t disappoint and they both play attacking football.
So boring to watch them…both…play safe and negative. Two legged ties invite that style with these two, if memory serves correctly.
