Montero equalizer helps Sounders tie Whitecaps

The Vancouver Whitecaps looked poised to take all three points and earn some bragging rights on rival Seattle, but the Sounders were bailed out by a familiar hero who delivered yet another clutch goal.

Freddy Montero scored in the 90th minute to help give the Sounders a 2-2 tie at BC Place in Vancouver. Montero collected an Eddie Johnson pass and put on a few stutter steps to free up enough room to curl a shot past Joe Cannon.

Vancouver opened the scoring courtesy of a 12th-minute Alain Rochat goal, but saw that lead disappear just two minutes into the second half when Johnson tied things up off a Mauro Rosales feed.

The Whitecaps looked primed for victory when Camilo delivered a go-ahead goal in the 82nd minute, but Montero spoiled the home team's victory party by providing his fourth goal of the season.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Impressed with the offensive display put on? Think Seattle and Vancouver are closer than their records might suggest? See Montero making a run at the MVP award?

  1. Eddie Johnson starting to put things together. He looks like a new striker. If he keeps this up; I would imagine we will be seeing him in a USMNT Jersey again. Possibly against Mexico in August.

  2. Sigi is getting little attack down the middle as neither CM is venturing forward. Evans is missed but someone, Rose, Alonso, or Caskey need to attack more often. Both CB’s looked slow/tired keeping up with the Whitecaps young strikers.

  3. Great strike from Montero. I’m stilled puzzled why Martin pulled Salgado and Mattocks. They were giving Sounders backline fits, and didn’t look tired. Their removal allowed Sigi to attack with more numbers. Although Mattocks missed a couple of sitters, both he and Salgado were missed at the end, cost the Whitecaps the game.

  4. According to the stats on Mlssoccer.com, Sounders had more possession, more shots on target, more corner kicks, more open play crosses, and more duels won.

Having said that, I think a tie is a fair result. Generally, Sounders looked better in possession, but Whitecaps were dangerous on a number of occasions.

    Fun game to watch.
