The Los Angeles Galaxy have been looking so dominant lately, winning their last four — the last two of them blowouts. But for much of Wednesday night, it looked like their time may have been up.

With the Galaxy two goals down 59 minutes in at Stade Saputo, the Montreal Impact seemed poised to end the five-game unbeaten streak of their guests. But then Gyasi Zardes did what he’s been doing a lot of this year, scoring his 15th goal and sparking a Galaxy rally to draw, 2-2.

Juninho drove a skidding diagonal ball through traffic into the box without a touch until a near-post Zardes one-timed a tap into the net. Zardes has scored in the last three Galaxy matches and he expanded upon his single-season scoring record for a MLS Homegrown Player.

Five minutes later, Landon Donovan started the sequence for the equalizer, passing to Robbie Keane, who had slipped into the box. As Keane ran toward goal, so did Alan Gordon, who was able to knock Keane’s cross into the net for the final score.

The assist puts Donovan just three shy of the Major League Soccer career assist record with seven regular season games to go.

Coming away with one point, the Galaxy remain second in the Western Conference and move within a point of the conference-leading Seattle Sounders.

In overcoming the two-goal deficit, the Galaxy squashed what could’ve been a major upset as the Impact sit last on the Eastern Conference table, now eight points behind the ninth-placed Chicago Fire.

The Impact opened scoring in the 28th minute with a neat passing chain up the field. A desperate long pass from Felipe found Ignacio Piatti along the left flank. Piatti cut in and dished it off to Dilly Duka on an overlapping run to the left. Duka slipped it Marco Di Vaio, running toward net, who calmly redirected the pass into goal for his sixth of the season.

Another 15 minutes later, the Impact doubled their lead. Heading toward the Galaxy goal with a three-on-two advantage, Felipe passed to Piatti in the middle of the box who cut outside defender Dan Gargan and fired it low and wide.

Next up, the Galaxy travel to face the West’s eighth-place San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday. The Impact head to New England to take on the East’s third-place Revolution on Saturday.
