After earning promotion to the senior Hoffenheim team this week, Russell Canouse made his German Bundesliga debut on Saturday.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann substituted the 20-year-old American on for Chilean international Eduardo Vargas in the 67th minute with the 1-0 lead vs. Wolfsburg. The U.S. Under-20 National Team midfielder helped his side hold onto that lead for the crucial three points, as the club is currently in the midst of a relegation battle.
Thanks to a third-minute goal from Andrej Kramaric at the Rhein-Neckar Arena, Hoffenheim is now level on points (24) with Eintracht Frankfurt. However, Eintracht is still third from bottom.
Canouse contributed one tackle after coming on for Nagelsmann’s side, making 13 touches and seven passes — with only one misplaced pass.
What do you think of Canouse’s debut? What are you expecting from him in 2016 and beyond? Think he should be called into the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team to play Colombia?
