Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Edgar Castillo Monterrey 71

Liga MX’s American newcomers may have grabbed their share of the headlines in recent weeks, but a long-time servant in Edgar Castillo made sure to get a bit of the spotlight this weekend.

Castillo found the back of the net for the first time this season on Saturday, scoring an insurance goal in Monterrey’s 5-1 thrashing of Veracruz. The veteran struck at the half-hour mark on a well-executed set piece, collecting a pass on the left side of the penalty area before slotting a shot to the far post. Castillo and Monterrey improved to 6-1-0 in the Clausura campaign, and currently sit in first place in the standings.

Castillo was not the only player to contribute to a top team in a foreign league. Christian Pulisic earned his first career start on Sunday in Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Pulisic played 45 minutes in the win, and now has four appearances in the German Bundesliga season.

It was not all good news this weekend, however. Gedion Zelalem was once again an unused substitute in Rangers’ 1-0 triumph over Queen of the South on Sunday, and Alfredo Morales and Tim Ream also were not in uniform in their respective side’s matches on Saturday.
