Malik Tillman’s impressive loan spell at PSV has led to the U.S. men’s national team star earning a permanent move to the club.
Tillman joined PSV on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich, signing with the club until June 2028. The news comes on the same day as PSV did not exercise the purchase option for Sergino Dest.
“I am very happy to stay longer at PSV. The first season has been great and I hope we will continue to win a lot of prizes in the coming years,” said Tillman. “That gives me the confidence that I am in the right place here and that I can develop into an even better footballer here.”
Tillman originally joined PSV on loan last August and enjoyed plenty of success in the Netherlands. The 21-year-old scored nine goals and added 15 assists in 37 combined appearances as PSV lifted the league title and reached the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
Despite signing a contract extension with Bayern Munich last summer, Tillman now rejoins international teammate Ricardo Pepi in Eindhoven.
“I am extremely happy that he is staying,” PSV manager Peter Bosz said. “He is only 21 years old, but has already made so many steps in his development this year. That is great to see and I am curious to see how he will continue to develop.”
Tillman has two final matches remaining on his schedule before entering a busy summer with the USMNT.
Good piece of business for sure, congrats Malik!!
Goddess deal for all parties. Munich from what I heard has a buy back clause too. If he continues to develop significantly Munich has first dibs.
I wondered why Bayern was just letting him go right as his star was rising. Every time I watched Tillman at PSV he was jumping off the field at me…smooth on the ball, confident, slick, explosively athletic, and shockingly physical, which you completely don’t expect – and which opposing players clearly didn’t expect either, judging from the way he constantly seemed to catch them off guard when he decided to rough them up. Except for maybe Thierry Henry back in the day, you just don’t see guys with so much finesse and elegance then turn around and go straight thug without missing a beat. (And before the squawking starts, yes, yes, I know Henry was a very different kind – and level – of player than Tillman. But Tillman does have a significant portion of Henry’s combination of elegant skill on the ball, speed, catlike contact balance, and brute strength.)
I said when I first saw Tillman that he was one of the top 2-3 guys in our pool in terms of ceiling, and I still very much think that. Again, something to consider – yes, not only is he 21 and still eligible for the Olympic squad, he’s also effectively 19-and-a-half because he missed more than a year due to an ACL tear that really slowed his development with Bayern. He is not close to maxing out his potential yet.
Nice….he grown significantly over the last year while at PSV.
