USMNT: Tyler Adams to feature vs. Brazil, Josh Sargent ruled out

U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter will have at least one added reinforcement for Wednesday’s home friendly vs. Brazil.

Tyler Adams is available to play for the USMNT, in what would be his sixth appearance for club and country this year. Berhalter confirmed Adams’ status for Wednesday’s Continental Clasico at Camping World Stadium, which is the USMNT’s final pre-Copa America tune-up before the group stage begins.

“Tyler will be available to play limited minutes and my guess is it’s under 45 minutes that he’s able to play,” Berhalter told media in a press conference Tuesday.

Adams, who joined AFC Bournemouth last summer from Leeds United, missed most of the English Premier League season after re-aggravating a previous hamstring injury. He did feature last spring against Luton Town, Everton, and Brentford, as well as make two USMNT appearances during the CONCACAF Nations League Final Four.

Forward Josh Sargent though will miss his second-straight match as he continues to battle back from a foot injury. Sargent entered USMNT camp off the back of his second-consecutive impressive season with Norwich City, where he tallied 16 goals in 26 league matches.

His status for the Copa America remains unknown despite Berhalter admitting that Sargent is making continued progress.

“Josh is progressing well,” Berhalter said. “He won’t take part in this game.”

The USMNT are aiming to rebound from a 5-1 loss to Colombia, which marked the worst loss for the program in the Berhalter-era.

  1. U23’s lost to Japan. They didn’t have a shot on goal. Let me repeat that they didn’t have a shot on goal. Same issues. Slow build up, striker on an island, not dynamic movement, and Japan clogged the midfield and sprang on quick technical counters. As I have said before this is a system and tactic issue at all levels. They have lost all ability to move the ball quickly.

    • Japan just finished their qualifying thru the Asian Cup in May. You could tell they were a lot more comfortable together.

-US looked vary wary of Japanese trap in the midfield. I don’t know if we weren’t prepared for it or they were doing differently or what. Tessmann was dropping between the CBs but then couldn’t connect to anyone. We weren’t pressing to begin and Japan just had way too much time and space, eventually our midfield and backline would lose connection and they’d just pass between our lines and had us outnumbered. Not sure the handball was in the box on the penalty goal and we were a bit unlucky because Schulte had the cross covered before Tomkinson deflected it into him and onto the path of the Japanese player. So we were a bit unlucky on the goals but also as you said lucky not to give up more. This is the fourth match I’ve seen of our U23s and we haven’t looked like this before. Not sure if Morris was supposed to start and his abrupt departure threw off the game plan or if Japan just played differently than last fall and that threw us off. I thought maybe some guys were tight because they know the roster is being decided Wednesday? Tolkin came on and put in three or four just dangerous balls that found teammates and sparked the offense but then only half chances came out of it or Japan played it out for corners. Not sure anyone played their way into the roster. Cremaschi might have played himself off. Tomkinson has to be hoping Neal and Dietz aren’t healthy and that Trusty isn’t coming because he was shaky. Zim was lucky not to get red carded for DOGSO but it was Booth’s fault he was in that position. But in real game sure red card.

      • I only got to see about the last 35 minutes. It looked like the US were a bit unlucky to not get a penalty for them, but this seems like a pretty fair description of what I saw. Slow and disconnected. Disorganized in pressing and had a lot of trouble playing through Japan’s press.

      • The issue I have with Tomkinson why not come to MLS. Why waste time in the 4th div of England waiting for a championship side like Norwich to give you 1st team mins.

  2. If Adams can only play for 45 minutes tops then krep him off the team sheet There is no reason to take risk for a friendly, other than to dangle a shiny object in front of the fan base to get us all to forget our national embarrassment this past Saturday.
