Who would you like to see the USA draw?

WorldCup2010Logo

The World Cup draw is just three days away, meaning we are just three days away from knowing which three nations the United States will be matched up against next summer.

While most U.S. fans will be hoping for as easy a draw as possible, I know there must be a few of you who are hoping for a particular match-up. Whether it's because of a team you like or hate, or perhaps specific players you would like to see the Americans face, there are some non-pushovers that U.S. fans will be hoping to get in the draw.

Could it be Serbia, and the chance to beat Neven Subotic?

Could it be Italy, for another crack at Giuseppe Rossi?

Could it be England, for the chance to quiet the EPL-loving Eurosnobs?

Could it be Germany, for the chance to avenge the Frings handball?

Could it be Brazil, for the chance to make up for the Confederations Cup Final loss?

So, aside from wanting the weakest possible draw (which is what most fans will clearly be hoping for on Fruday, Which strong national team would you like to see the USA match up against?

  1. The anger toward Serbia and Subotic is misguided as USSF and Rongen basically drove him away.

The one team for the USA to play from pot one other than SA would be Italy.

  2. Ha, I knew someone would say that when I said Donovan only plays in MLS. If that’s what you think so be it, I can definitely see myself being perceived as one, and perhaps I am a little bit. What can I say, I enjoy the EPL and the players in it. I still follow MLS sometimes and I want it to succeed, but I find the EPL much more entertaining and talented. And besides, nothing I’ve said is untrue, so I don’t see how speaking the truth makes me that much of a Eurosnub…

  3. It has to be England…

So many US fans kiss Englands A$$, and even root for England for some strange reason. And so many English fans are very dismissive of the US (although that number is dropping, and its mostly the idiot fans). This is their best shot at winning a World Cup ever (other than when they actually won it). I would love for us to play them the third game, and absolutely dash their hopes. Then take the WC from them in 2018…

Also, out of all the european teams we have played, for some reason it seems like we respect England the most, too much so. considering England is highly overrated as compared to the other top programs in the world, it kills me to see us play so tentatively against them. So to see us actually go out and play like we belong to be there would be nice. Especially if Charlie Davies and Oneywu were playing at that time

  5. Here’s my four:

South Africa- because it we have a good chance of beating them

France-because to beat them would give us more credibility and everybody wants them out because of Handy, I mean Henry

Nigeria-becuase I always wanted to see us play them

We come out of that group and we get a little more respect.

  6. Well, I just saw FIFA’s pots for the draw. Once again we are in the pot with the weaker Asian teams, as opposed to Africa, and are hosed. There are still reasons for optimism, but we could be in some really hairy groupings. Of course, while the draw is very important, the most important issue is how we play on the day. I am hoping for a draw with a reasonable chance to progress, i.e. NOT Neth., Ivory Coast, and France. Although I would like to see us play France later in the tournament, we really need a somewhat weaker team in our group since the possible African teams are also mostly quite strong. While it would be fantastic to come OUT of group like the one I cited above, I don’t like those odds. Obviously our best chance of progressing will be to be in the gp w/ S. Africa & a weaker Euro team (Slovenia, Switz., Slovakia). Yeah, we just lost to Slovakia, but both without our full team and on their turf. I’d be glad to match up with them again when it really counted.

  7. Alright, while I don’t mean that England would crush the United States without breaking a sweat, I do think they are one of the most talented teams in the world, and if they are playing as well as they did in qualifying they could put a hurting on any team, especially a mid-level team like the U.S. I know England is over-rated, but they are obviously extremely talented. I mean, they do have world-class stars that mainly play in the EPL? Does the U.S. have any? Just because they aren’t as good as Spain isn’t a good argument. They aren’t that far behind. The U.S. has not shown to me that they are capable of competing with the top teams. The Spain win was great, but do you really think they could do it again? And no, Rooney isn’t as good as Messi, Ronaldo or Torres, but so what? So he’s slightly less better. If he’s on, he could destroy any team. While I don’t think any team will underestimate the U.S., I honestly don’t think they are talented enough or coached well enough to compete seriously…

  8. I don’t know that FIFA have clarified who will be in which pot for this draw. Have they? My understanding was that there is a chance the CONCACAF teams could end up in a pot with either Africa or Asia. Personally, I’d really rather be in the pot with the African teams so we get at least 1 weak team in our group. We DON’T need another group like WC06. Obviously the ideal group would be S. Africa, a lesser UEFA team, and a weak team from Asia (N. Korea) or NZ, but since we don’t know the pots yet it is hard to predict the draw. Let’s just hope we AREN’T in the group of death this time.

  9. You are dreaming. Those 3 teams will never be in the same group, much less with the USMNT. Remember, while the seeding is not done well, it does exist.

I am hoping for Argentina as the seeded team. We almost beat them in NYC and they are still not playing well, so I think they are the most over-rated seed. Secondly, if we can’t get them I would love a match with England. It would be great to play them on the world stage and see how we match up in a game that really mattered. The team I would most like to play, much later in the tourney though, is Netherlands. I’d love to see how our offense could cope with their defense, but know their offense is likely to overpower us. So, they would be my favorites to face in say the final. 🙂
