Barcelona destroys Real Madrid (Updated with highlights)

It was supposed to be a battle of the two best teams in the world, but by the end of it, only one team looked like a world beater.

Barcelona savaged Real Madrid, ripping apart Jose Mourinho's normally stingy defense on the strength of the sharp passing of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. Goals from Xavi, Pedro, David Villa (with two) and Jeffren buried Real Madrid, 5-0, handing Mourinho the worst loss of his managerial career.

Real Madrid simply couldn't keep up with Barcelona's precision passing, with Xavi opening the scoring off a great feed from Iniesta. Messi blew the match open with a pair of pin-point passes finished off by Villa. By the time Jeffren added a fifth, Real Madrid was coming apart at the seams. Sergio Ramos was sent off after an ugly challenge on Messi followed by a shove to the face of Spain teammate Carles Puyol.

If you missed the bloodbath, or just want to watch the goal-fest one more time, here are the highlights:

What did you think of Barcelona's blowout? Surprised how lop-sided it was? Think anybody can stop Barca this year? Looking forward to the rematch, or think it will be more of the same?

  1. Try again. Alves is normal starter–and was only able to go forward after CR9 was switched back to left side. I was actually impressed by Mourinho, it was a good idea to put your better defensive winger (di Maria) on Alves & CR9 on Abidal (who usually stays home). But, Real’s defensive mid is nothing like inter’s and a defensive strategy isn’t going to do it against this Barca.

  2. Or Robben. Or Van der Vaart. Or maybe there is something poisonous about the Bernebeu that keeps talented groups of players from gelling and becoming a true team.

  3. To the guy above, Ozil wouldn’t be able to start for Barcelona, as crazy and scary as that sounds.

Top international striker in the world: Villa.
Best player in the world: Messi
Two best midfielders in the world: Xavi and Iniesta.

You have 4 of the top 10 players in the world, on one team…

  4. Awesome! One of my favorite was years ago, something about Ronaldinho being bought lapdances that night because of his performance on the pitch…

  5. I wish dish Network hadn’t dropped GolTV. I would’ve loved to here Ray ‘Udson loose a nut. But from what I heard, GolTV were asking for Roman Abramovich type $$. Oh well, there’s always streaming…

  6. You could write the Barca win off as an anomaly considering how lop-sided and dominating the game was.

At the same time though, Barcelona was very impressive and I’ve never seen a Mourinho team be obliterated that bad.

  7. Why? You must be an England/EPL fan, or you just can’t stand the fact that the size of Barcelona’s offensive Arsenal and brilliant passers are all small and not the classic “Athletes” that guys like Bob Bradley think are necessary to succeed.
Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Pedro, Villa, Busquets, Alves, Bojan and Jeffren all masters of ball possession and surgical precision passing, eat it baby! Imagine if Mascherano fins a way to start for this team or rotate time with Busquets? Bojan is finding his groove, Jeffren is back man oh man what a team. I can’t imagine what would happen if Cesc came back home?

  8. What does it matter they’ll surely be outclassed any day of the week Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday = annihilation after annihilation etc..

  9. I have not seen a bunch of mercenaries get stomped on that badly since George Washington and the American army spanked the Hessians at the Battle of Trenton back in 1776. Just brutal.

One thing is clear to me about Real Madrid after watching this game: They should have never sold Wesley Sneijder.

  10. What’s MourinHO going to do? Nothing! He can sit and look mad with those cloudy eyebrows of his if he wants, meanwhile Barca will just collect the trophy now and save Real the misery of what was a fruitless season.

  11. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I want Ray Hudson to do the color commentary on my life.

One of my faves (among many) from today: “Real Madrid’s defense got stretched out like spandex on Miami Beach and Casillas is left naked.”

  12. They made them look like a regular second division side in one match 6-2 defeat and 5-0 how many more wippings will they take until they wear red shorts with those white tees! Barca’s name is stamped all over La Liga, they should rename it La Liga de Barca!

  13. Absolutely brilliant by Barca! Tactical masterpiece by Guardiola switching Maxwell for Abidal to free Alves to go forward. now we know who the real genius is. Pathetic display by the three Portuguese and last nail in the coffin for Benzema. One of the most convincing displays of power I’ve ever seen from any team anywhere.

  14. From BBC:

But the Argentine’s display was so staggeringly good that Real’s Ronaldo was reduced to a bit part player in the Nou Camp.

  15. I wasn’t surprised that Barca won, I was surprised at how many people were picking Real coming into this game. Until proven otherwise repeatedly, Barca are the favorite in every game they play.

  17. This was an annihilation. It’s hard to believe that a motivated team of world-class players could be humbled as thoroughly as was done today. This wasn’t Ronaldo’s fault, but I sure did enjoy seeing that puckered look on his face while the Barca players played tiki-taka.

  18. Best tweet I saw was that the Barca was “pornographically good.”

What an amazing beatdown. You almost forgot that this team that Barca was wiping their behinds with was Madrid, who had not lost and was on a stellar run of form. Wow. Wow. and Gollee.

Just an amazing display. Stunningly beautiful.

  19. Up there with one of the finest performances a team could possibly put on. Have to put it on a similar, if not higher level with the 7-1 by Man U (first that came to head)
