Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

The passing of Dennis Marshall didn't only affect Costa Rican players. It also affected Marshall's teammates at Aalborg BK, and one American paid tribute to the late defender this weekend.

Chris Rolfe honored his former teammate with the game-winning goal in Aalborg's home-opener, a 2-1 win versus AGF Aarhus. Rolfe, who was substituted following his goal, netted on a beautiful blast from about 23 yards out after controlling the ball with his chest. He celebrated the finish by pointing at the sky to commemorate Marshall.

Joe Corona, a Los Angeles-born winger who played a larged part in helping Club Tijuana earn promotion, also found the back of the net. In his debut in Mexico's top division, Corona netted the equalizer in a 2-1 loss to Morelia.

DaMarcus Beasley and Herculez Gomez didn't find the back of the net, but they did make their debuts with their respective clubs. Beasley started and played 88 minutes in a Puebla victory while Gomez got the nod and went the distance in Estudiantes Tecos' 2-1 loss.

This list is growing at a pretty high rate, a lot of Americans abroad when most leagues haven’t started up yet. Its nice to see.

  • Connor Walsh

really? find me that quote where he says “i want to play for mexico”

  • Dale

I saw it in some Mexican website as well, Im trying to find it…..but he did say his priority is a call up for Mexico’s national team.

  • Bubba

Joe Corona also expressed interest in playing for El Salvador a while back. He actually has the option of playing for one of three national teams. His dad is Mexican and his mom is Salvadoran according to an article I read a while back on http://www.selectatalent.com. He could have recently said he wanted to play for Mexico, but the reality is that a National has to first give him an invitation. We are going to see a lot of these cases in the future, best we start getting used to it.

  • Cgold

I don’t know if anyone has heard yet, but USA U18 striker Villyan Bijev was signed to a first team deal with Liverpool this weekend. He is apparently going out on loan in Belguim for a season. Word was he killed it while on trial.

  • Dale

Im guessing he wants to give back, since Tijuana gave him the opportunity to show what he had to offer. it should be interesting to see what happens.

  • CplDaniel

Hope Ruelas can earn some playing time and help is team out. Sorry for Torres’ suffering a 4-1 loss. Hope Yevgeni and Herculez make the back of the net cry soon. Bedoya?? Is the back-room angry with him, or are they trying to keep him healthy with the hope to get offers to sell him in the next few weeks while they still can?

  • Francois

Ya I read that, pretty stoked to see the kid develop. Could be huge for our national team in the future.

  • m

Yeah he played one half of a game while there…scored a hat trick, drew a converted PK, and had an assist. 5/8 goals due in part to you is quite nice.

  • Brian

It was just a preseason match, but Robbie Findlay scored the game winning goal for Nottingham Forest.

  • USSFdon'tthread

Preseason: America de Cali 5 – Quindio 0, Diego Restrepo gets the start in goal for America with Kevin Piedrahita coming in at the 75th min to wrap-up the shutout. Both GK are American and have played for the u-20’s, yet still no mention in Yanks Abroad articles.

  • NATO

way to go Matt Taylor. Keep scoring and scoring, you might find yourself on a top team challenging for promotion to the Bundesliga. I doubt he ever gets a NT call-up though. 30 years old and only 5’10.

  • EA

Beasley started at forward, and moved back to left midfield occasionally throughout the game.

He looked really confident, and arguably looked like the best player on the field at times.

His fitness really lagged in the second half, though.

  • Modibo

Good to see Rolfe come back after his long injury. Hopefully this will influence Tracy positively.

  • Matt

Bull! I heard he was already in talks to be part of the US Sub-23 Olympic team.

  • matt

I’m pretty sure he’ll end up playing for the US. I heard he was in talks to be part of the US Olympic Sub 23 team. The way Mexico is right now with young talent, he won’t be able to stand out and start.

If he doesn’t choose US, I hope he chooses Mexico because they have a better chance at a world cup than El Salvador.

To everyone else, whatever he chooses, I don’t want anybody calling anybody a traitor. Blame the USSF, the FMF or El Salvador’s federation and their efforts in trying to get this kid. Good luck to him.

For clubs, I’m a LA Galaxy fan but have always been a Mexican soccer fan and can’t wait to travel down to TJ to see Corona play.

  • Bubba

I hope people don’t see him as a traitor. He will go to the team that comes for him first, with the exception of El Salvador. I wasn’t trying to say he would only play for El Salvador, I was actually trying to show that he will say things to keep his options open. It will be interesting to see where he ends up

  • Tom

Nice to see Rolfy score with some flair. He generally just puts home nose for the goal type strikes.

  • jp992751

I know I will get hounded for this…but can we cap tie him in our next competitive fixtures! Not saying he will be the next Messi or anything but why chance it. Belgium passport..he might decide to play for them if we don’t move fast!

  • PanchoMiguelMoralesdeConejo

OK, I’ll bite, (even though I know I’ll regret it),….who is the “Latin Obama”?

  • DaveW

Paraphrased a bit, in the Medio Tiempo quote he says it’s his priority to be considered by the Mexican national team, but if that’s not possible he wouldn’t discard the possibility of playing for either USA or El Salvador.
