FC Barcelona dominated play but had no goals to show for it after a scoreless first half against Real Madrid, but they broke through in the second half with three straight goals to erase a Cristiano Ronaldo opener and take control of the Spanish Super Cup series.
Goals from Pedro, Lionel Messi and Xavi helped Barcelona jump out to a 3-1 lead before Angel DiMaria pounced on a Victor Valdes blunder to give Real Madrid a valuable goal in a 3-2 Barcelona first-leg victory at Camp Nou on Thursday.
Ronaldo gave Real Madrid the 1-0 lead off a powerful header, but Pedro equalized just one minute later on a play that replays showed was offside.
Andres Iniesta stole the show the rest of the match, drawing a penalty that Messi converted before picking out a perfect pass to set up Xavi's goal.
Barcelona nearly made it 4-1 but Iker Casillas came through with a clutch save on Lionel Messi, which came just before DiMaria's goal. Valdes took his time playing the ball with his feet in the penalty area when DiMaria stripped him and made the score 3-2.
Now Barcelona will travel to Madrid for the return leg on Wednesday with a goal advantage.
