MLS- Vancouver Whitecaps

Whitecaps sign centerback O'Brien

The Vancouver Whitecaps might have one of the better defenses in MLS, but that has not stopped head coach Martin Rennie from further strengthening that part of his team.

The Whitecaps announced Wednesday that they have signed veteran centerback Andy O'Brien, who has spent the last decade-and-a-half playing in England. The 33-year-old defender last played for Championship side Leeds United, but he has made over 300 appearance in the Premiership in his career.

A former Republic of Ireland international with 26 caps to his name, O'Brien gives the Whitecaps another experienced option in the back to pair with standout defender Jay DeMerit. O'Brien also adds another aerial presence to Vancouver's back line, as he stands at 6-foot-3 and is described as Rennie as a player who is good in the air and also comfortable on the ball.

Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

What do you think of the Whitecaps adding O'Brien? Think he will wind up starting before the season is over? Expecting him to do well in MLS?

I see what you did there, Franco….

…my heart jumped a bit thinking Vancouver signed John “O’Brien”.

    Oh well. One can dream!

Is Rennie looking to be Trader Mo part II? Seems like he is awfully busy with the signings, trades, getting rid of people he only recently traded for, etc. it keeps things exciting, but is not good for long-term chemistry one would think, if you continue to do so year after year.

Montreal would have something to say about that.

The 2 best backlines are in Canada.
