Disney Classic Rewind: Crew and Sporting KC stay unbeaten; Red Bulls rout Impact; and more

Federico Higuain

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The Columbus Crew continued their winning preseason ways on Saturday, converting a late penalty kick to knock off the Philadelphia Union in the Walt Disney Pro Soccer Classic.

Federico Higuain converted an 87th-minute penalty kick after Ryan Finley drew the PK by being fouled by Union defender Amobi Okugo.

After a 3-1 victory against Toronto FC Wednesday, the Crew gave newly acquired Costa Rican central defender Giancarlo Gonzalez a win in his preseason debut. The Costa Rican international played 61 minutes for the Crew.

Here are some more results from Saturday’s action in the Disney Classic:

Three different scorers found the net to help the New York Red Bulls roll to a 3-0 victory against the Montreal Impact on Saturday.

Thierry Henry set up a Roy Miller goal just before halftime, while second-half substitutes Ruben Bover and Bradley Wright-Phillips scored seconds apart, with Bover blasting home a long-range shot.

Paulo Nagamura’s brace was all Sporting Kansas City needed to secure a 3-0 victory over Fluminense’s U23s, and a perfect start to the Disney Soccer Classic.

Nagamura opened up the scoring in the 39th minute when Claudio Bieler’s pass gave the Brazilian the clear opportunity to send a powerful low shot past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.

Midfielder Jimmy Medranda doubled the lead in the 55th minute, after a failed clearance resulted into the Colombian blasting the ball past the goalkeeper. Nagamura scored his second moments later on a volley from Bieler.

Orlando City SC’s 88th-minute goal helped the Lions salvage a 1-1 draw against winless Toronto FC on Saturday.

Kyle Bekker gave TFC the early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute after a foul in Orlando’s box was called. However, the Lions responded with a wave of attacks for much of the match, outshooting the Reds 18-7.

Toronto FC brought in Dwayne DeRosario and Michael Bradley in the second half, but that wouldn’t stop the Lions from searching for the equalizer, and in the 88th minute Orlando City’s Darwin Ceren’s corner kick found Mark Howard, who headed home from close range to tie the score.

Day three of the Disney Pro Soccer Classic continues on Wednesday, with the Philadelphia Union facing Toronto FC (1 p.m.), Fluminense U23s playing the New York Red Bulls (3 p.m.), Orlando City taking on the Columbus Crew (6 p.m.) and Sporting Kansas City meeting the Montreal Impact (8 p.m.).
