MLS Ticker: FC Dallas sign Escobar, Impact add Uruguayan forward; and more

FC Dallas have spent the offseason looking to add some forward help from the international market and that search finally bore fruit on Friday, with the announcement of the team’s latest Colombian.

FC Dallas has signed Andres Ramiro Escobar, the club revealed on Friday, bringing in the speedy left-footed attacker on loan from Dynamo Kiev.

“Escobar is a great young player,” FC Dallas technical director Fernando Clavijo said. “He has played in Europe for the last few years and I expect him and Fabian Castillo to form one of the best flank combinations in the league.

“Both players are very similar in their speed and ability to beat players one-on-one. I expect Escobar will fill the void created by the loss of Jackson on the right flank.”

Here’s some more news and notes from around MLS to round out your week:

The Montreal Impact bolstered their forward corps on Friday by signing Uruguayan striker Santiago Gonzalez from Uruguayan club Institucion Atletico Sud America.

“Santiago is a young striker that has already played three professional seasons,” Impact Sporting Director Nick De Santis said. “He is a dynamic forward that moves very well and can play with his back to the goal. It will take a bit of time to adapt, but I think he can bring a different element to the team.”

Gonzalez joins a collection of forwards that includes Italian star Marco DiVaio and Andrew Wenger.

Adolfo “Bofo” Bautista opened his Chivas USA scoring account in preseason action, striking a beautiful free kick goal for the winning tally in a 1-0 victory against Real Salt Lake on Thursday in Carson, Calif.

I like the thinking behind the Dallas and Montreal moves, anyway. Young, dynamic players what we are looking for. Never seen either of them play a lick, but their pedigrees look pretty solid.

Apparently, Santi Gonzalez was signed under the “Special Discovery Player” rule.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the MLS suits are just making this stuff up as they go along?

    • Kosh

MLS does have its quirkiness, true. But just because you’ve heard it for the first time does not necessarily mean that “MLS just makes stuff up as the go along”.

    • Brain Guy

The “Special Discovery Player” rule may have already been available, but you are correct — if MLS believes it is important enough to get a player into the league, they will bend and even make up new procedures as and when necessary.

    • TomG

I think it’s pretty much public knowledge by now, that they are willing to bend, break or completely obliterate any and all rules if it suits their needs, yes. Special Discovery Player does have the same made up ring as, “Double Secret Probation,” though. Maybe they need a new name for it.

    • Brian

I don’t care as long as they keep adding talent to the league. Rules are being “made up along the way” for any team who can sign a quality player so it really is no big deal to me.

this guy spurned MLS a couple of years back because he was getting heavy interest from Europe, but this guy is gonna beast for Dallas. Legit second striker who will link up beautifully with Perez.

If this is the last of the moves for Dallas, we’re pretty much set. We could definitely do with some wing depth on the right, but if this is the last of our moves, were a playoff team on paper

    • Kingsly Alexander

Wow, well I guess Perez will be continuing with a 4-2-3-1

      • Amru

I still think we need a DP level number 8 in the midfield before we can really challenge in the playoffs

      • tim

Yes, Diaz doesn’t have enough coverage. Garcia is about it, who’s got next to 0 minutes a a professional. Supposedly Span can slide inside, but any footage I’ve seen he’s out wide – not comfortable in the CAM area yet.

And Hassli behind Blas is still a huge question mark.

      • Kingsly Alexander

Apparently more moves are coming. BigD reports that some trialists are going to be brought in soon and were already over 30 players

Judging by all the by-lines today, it looks like SBI hired a new writer. Some guy named “Ives Galarcep”. Right on.

  • RK

I think we need to be clear here — he is with Kyiv on contract only. They keep farming him out — even back to his original club, then to Evian.
