After displaying his ability to break up play in last week’s victory over the Seattle Sounders, Fatai Alashe demonstrated Sunday that he has plenty to offering on the attacking side of the game as well.

Alashe scored the first goal of his MLS career Sunday, as the Earthquakes topped the Chicago Fire, 2-1, in the inaugural game at Avaya Stadium, earning Alashe recognition as SBI MLS Rookie of the Week.

The Michigan State product opened Avaya Stadium in style by scoring the first MLS goal in the facility’s history. Less than five minutes into Sunday’s contest, Alashe provided the opener on a set piece, as the rookie pounced to smash a header into the back of the net, sending Avaya Stadium into a frenzy.

Alashe beat out Colorado Rapids defender Axel Sjoberg and Fire midfielder Matt Polster for this week’s honors.

What did you think of Alashe’s performance? Which rookie stood out to you in MLS Week 3?
