The quest for a second straight Gold Cup title will take the U.S. Men’s National Team to Baltimore on Saturday to face underdog Cuba in one of four Gold Cup quarterfinal clashes this weekend.

Episode 222 of The SBI Show previews the USA-Cuba match, which the Americans will be heavily favored to win. We also discuss the other quarterfinals, including the Mexico-Costa Rica tilt that will send home a pre-tournament favorite a round early.

Co-host Garrett Cleverly and I also preview MLS Week 20, and discuss the latest big news around the league, such as Gio Dos Santos’ signing with the LA Galaxy.

  1. Interestingly, Canada had Sinclair on the cover. I think the real issue is that you must be a Portland Thorn to be on the cover. I expect Angerer to be on the German version. Also, Ives will need to add Geiger to his Mexican soccer Mt. Rushmore.

  2. Garrett’s 100% right about the FIFA 16 cover. Is Lloyd the better player? Yes, but Morgan is the more marketable player. It’s a noble thought to hand things like magazine, album, and game covers or *cough* all-star selections *cough* to those more deserving, but the “big names” are always going to steal the spotlight. Will it sell more games? Most likely, yes. Ives is right, fanatics will buy the game regardless of who is on the cover, but that doesn’t account for customers who don’t follow women’s soccer, or soccer at all. Who knows, maybe a parent is buying the game for their son or daughter, and while they know nothing of the sport, they recognize that girl from nearly ever commercial during that soccer thing on TV last month. “Hey, *child’s name* likes soccer and video games, and this one has that girl from the Panasonic, Bridgestone, Chapstick, Nationwide, Coca-Cola, Nike, etc. commercial on the cover. Maybe I’ll buy that!” Chances are the average Joe wouldn’t recognize the girl from the Burlington Volkswagen commercial, no matter how well she performed in a World Cup. Unfortunate? Maybe, but that’s marketing for you.
