It will sure be tough to keep Miguel Ibarra out of Club Leon’s lineup in league play if he keeps this up.

Ibarra scored for the second consecutive Copa MX match on Tuesday, netting the 25th-minute opener of a 3-1 road victory over Correcaminos UAT. Ibarra, 25, scored for Leon when he collected a pass on the left side of the penalty area and slotted the ball into the far corner. The goal was his second this month after he broke open his account on Mexican soil back on Aug. 5 in a 3-3 draw with Atletico San Luis.

Ibarra’s goal-scoring performance should help him in his quest for more minutes in the Liga MX season. The winger has been held to just spot duty off the bench thus far in league play, totaling 21 minutes in three appearances, but he could earn a more vital role as a result of capitalizing on the opportunities he’s being given in Copa MX.

The 90-minute outing could also catch the eye of U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who introduced Ibarra to the international game and has to finalize his roster soon for a pair of September friendlies against Peru and Brazil. Ibarra has been a regular call-up under Klinsmann since last fall, but was not included in this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup roster.

  1. Absolutely nothing against Ibarra – you take the chances you are given – but if Klinsmann is seriously going to look at a USMNT pool player a look simply because he scored against a vastly inferior CONCACAF club opponent, he may as well call in Alan Gordon.. oh wait.
