It is not only the U.S. Men’s National Team that is dealing with a slew of injuries ahead of next month’s CONCACAF Cup.

Mexico has reportedly lost Rafa Marquez for the Oct. 10 match against the U.S. because of an injury. Reports of Marquez suffering a groin strain had surfaced in recent days, but it is now confirmed that he will be out for several weeks.

The news comes shortly after captain Andrés Guardado was ruled out with a leg injury he picked up during a UEFA Champion League game for PSV Eindhoven, leaving interim coach Ricardo Ferretti without two of El Tri’s most important players.

Marquez — who plays for Hellas Verona — sustained the injury during his club’s 1-1 draw against Atalanta in Serie A action last Sunday. Marquez limped off the pitch in the 70th minute of the contest and underwent medical examinations. The recovery time is estimated to be approximately four weeks.

Here are some other news and notes around world soccer:

GABRIEL’S 3-MATCH SUSPENSION WITHDRAWN

Arsenal’s Gabriel lost his cool on the pitch but won one of his battles off it.

After an FA Independent Regulatory Commission hearing on Tuesday, Arsenal’s claim that the 24-year-old defender was wrongfully dismissed during its game against Chelsea on Saturday has been upheld. Therefore, the three-match suspension that was slapped on the player has been withdrawn.

Gabriel was dismissed for violent conduct during the game amid a heated exchange with Chelsea’s Diego Costa.

Gabriel, however, is still currently subject to a separate FA charge of improper conduct in relation to that contest and has until Thursday to respond to it.

RAFINHA UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY, OUT FOR 6 MONTHS

The road to recovery starts now for Barcelona’s Rafinha.

After he suffered a torn ACL during the club’s UEFA Champions League match against AS Roma last week, the 22-year-old midfielder has had a successful operation on the injured right knee. He is expected to miss six months of action.

Rafinha’s absence will force Barcelona manager Luis Enrique to dig into the depth chart until Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal can start playing when the club’s one-year ban on new players expires at the end of the calendar year.

Barcelona, however, has asked the Spanish federation and FIFA for permission to play Turan immediately following the news on Rafinha, according to The Guardian.

SCHALKE 04 TARGETS CANADA’S JUNIOR HOILETT

Junior Hoilett’s time in England could be winding down.

The 25-year-old winger for English League Championship side Queens Park Rangers hasn’t been favored by manager Chris Ramsey as of late and has been targeted by Bundesliga’s Schalke 04 for a January transfer, according to ESPN FC.

Hoilett, who is in the final year of his contract with QPR, has started in just 47 leauge matches since joining the club three years ago. He has only featured in two Capital One Cup games this season, however.

Born in Brampton, Ontario, to a Jamaican father, Hoilett has drawn interest from both the Canadian and Jamaican national teams in the past but has yet to commit to either side.

  1. What about what he did to Cobi at the 2002 WC? They was straight up assult. He is one of my favorite reasons to hate the Mexican National Team.

    • The elbow to Cobi & The Flying straight kick to Howard’s chest are two of the most notable instances where Rafa showed what a POS he is/was. However I’m torn about his being ruled out of the match in Oct. While I hate him, he always does something stupid that provides an advantage to the US.

  2. why the hell was gabriel’s suspension thrown out? did they determine that he didn’t actually kick out at costa? that’s always a red card; it’s immaterial that costa should’ve already been sent off at that point.

once again, the fa can’t help looking foolish.

  3. I couldn’t be happier about Rafa Marquez being out. He is forever etched in my mind when he violently landed on Shea Salinas and broke several of his ribs. It cost the Earthquakes dearly at the time. Rafa Marquez is what they call in hockey an enforcer?
