David Beckham might still be working on trying to finalize the stadium plans for his proposed MLS franchise in Miami, but that is still not stopping him from dreaming of signing one of the world’s most prolific strikers in due time.

Beckham is open to signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic if and when the retired global icon is able to hammer out a deal for a soccer-specific stadium. Beckham has been trying to land an MLS expansion franchise in Miami during the last two years, but has to come to terms for a stadium before being officially awarded a club.

If that happens, Beckham would like to bring Ibrahimovic on board. Beckham formerly played with the Swede at Paris Saint-Germain, and is well aware of what the veteran forward brings to the table.

“If Ibrahimovic is still active, then I want to buy him right away,” Beckham told Swedish outlet Aftonbladet. “He is a physically magnificent specimen, so it’s entirely possible. Who does not want a man who is prepared to kill to win?”

The one problem might be Ibrahimovic’s age. He is 34-years old now, and Beckham thinks it will be at least two more years before he can get a team in South Florida up and running.

Ibrahimovic continues to play at a high level for PSG, however, and that combined with his competitiveness and star power are reasons why Beckham would be keen to bring him to Miami even in the twilight of his career.

“I’ve played with or against the very best in the world,” Beckham said. “I want to say that I have never met anyone who was so serious during both practice and games. When I came to Paris I knew that he was an incomparable talent as a player, but he’d be so tough and merciless on himself at all times, I had no idea.

“He is a born winner. He is a beast with huge self confidence, and I’m one of his biggest admirers.”

  1. Beckham is right to claim him early, Ibra stay in Paris a couple more years then come to Miami to explode the MLS, he is that good of a player.

  3. When it come to David Beckham’s Miami team and Paolo Maldini’s Miami team, Paolo is proving to have the better club plans while Beckham seems to be to focused on big name signing and a stadium. The bad thing about building a stadium as a new team, you have no clue how good your fan base is going to be. You don’t want to make your stadium to big or to small where it leave no room for growth. The funny thing is, those opinions are shared with Paolo who had an interview stating the same thing. Also, it’s odd having Beckham United, LAFC and Minnesota United build a stadium when Seattle and Columbus Crew do not have one. It’s also odd Atlanta are able to share a new stadium with a NFL team. I’m very confuse with MLS’s expansion club rules.

Really? I can do without that, thank you very much. Just focus on finding a site for your stadium and then worry about the rest.

  5. This is sort of a non-story since it’s just Becks trying to throw some coal in the hype train…but it’s not outlandish and won’t prevent me from saying the following:
Gawd I love me some MLS. As an American it’s obviously easy to support “our” league…but it’s also just a ton of fun to follow a league that is developing and changing so quickly. By 2020 there will be more teams, more soccer specific stadiums, more mid-level talent, and more world renown names such as Zlatan, CR7 and who knows who else.

  6. Which will happen first?
    – Beckham FC plays their first match in their new stadium.
    – NYCFC plays their first match in their new stadium.
    – Beckham FC gives up on Miami and folds or moves elsewhere.
    – NYCFC gets sold.

    • I’ve been consistent on avoiding older DPs, but Zlatan is a young 34 the way he’s playing. Avoiding in any drastic declines in the next 24 months, he’d still be a huge signing.

Admittedly, I hate even typing that because perception is reality and it does nothing but continue to the retirement league stigma. However, Zlatan is Zlatan and I know I’d personally pay money to see him when his club came to my MLS city. Even if that is two years from now.
