Red Bulls vs. Chivas USA: Match Night commentary

Red_bulls_logoChivas_usa_logo

Good evening folks. The New York Red Bulls take on Chivas USA at Giants Stadium tonight and I will be doing a running commentary on the match.

Let’s get started:

—————————————–

FINAL- RED BULLS 1, Chivas USA 0. A hard-fought win from the Red Bulls, who desperately needed these three points. The defense delivered a strong performance and the offense woke up after a terrible second half to play a more inspired second half, led by Dane Richards and Angel, who delivered the game-winner.

—————————————–

92nd minute- Mendes for Richards, who came off with a knock.

—————————————–

91st minute- Mendes is set to come into the match.

—————————————–

89th minute- Three minutes of stoppage time coming and the Red Bulls are attacking with the lead.

—————————————–

85th minute- Richards gets my vote for man of the match. He’s beaten Mendoza regularly, though to be fair to Chivas USA, Mendoza has been playing left back for about three weeks. No matter, Richards put on a strong second half.

—————————————–

82nd minute- Sassano with a nice dribble forward. Sassano came in for Borman after the goal and should help provide some better possession in midfield.

—————————————–

80th minute- Much better second half all the way around from the Red Bulls. More passion, tougher on challenges and Van Den Bergh and Richards have sparked the attack.

—————————————–

77th minute- Richards was due to beat Mendoza and he finally did.

—————————————–

75th minute- GOAL RED BULLS. Angel with header goal on a perfect cross from Richards.

—————————————–

70th minute- 9,521 is the attendance. Not many people and not much action.

—————————————–

66th minute- Van Den Bergh with a dangerous chance but sends it wide and nobody is there to finish.

—————————————–

64th minute- Borman with the Red Bulls first shot on goal of the game. Guzan smothers it.

—————————————–

60th minute- At least the Red Bulls accomplished one thing, they halted Jorge Flores goal-scoring streak.

—————————————–

52nd minute- Slightly more promising stuff from the Red Bulls this half. Still not clicking, but better offensively.

—————————————–

49th minute- Van Den Bergh came oh so close with a cross turned shot. Someone needs to latch on to that and finish it.

—————————————–

48th minute- And we’re back (And no, you haven’t missed anything.)

—————————————–

HALFTIME- Red Bulls 0, Chivas USA 0, level of excitement at this game 0.

—————————————–

45th minute-  Conway with a clutch save on a Kljestan shot. Red Bulls fell asleep on that one.

—————————————–

41st minute- Chivas USA knocks the ball around very well when they want to, but they almost seem to be sitting back.

—————————————–

35th minute- To their credit, the Red Bulls defenders have been sharp tonight.

—————————————–

32nd minute- Van Den Bergh and Magee are struggling to get any of the ball. Between that and the wings failing to provide any service, Angel is starving for looks.

—————————————–

30th minute- Angel missed a golden chance there. He finishes that chance a year ago.

—————————————–

26th minute- The Red Bulls just look flat tonight. Luckily for them, Chivas USA doesn’t seem to be forcing the issue.

—————————————–

22nd minute- Dave Van Den Bergh raises his hands helplessly, not too happy with the lack of movement by his teammates.

—————————————–

21st minute- Richards with a sweet move to get into the penalty area, but his shot misses by inches.

—————————————–

14th minute- Chivas USA with a nice attacking sequence that is eventually halted. The Red Bulls get the ball and promptly boot it forward aimlessly.

—————————————–

12th minute- Juan Pablo Angel is starving for service. Danleigh Borman’s last cross was terrible.

—————————————–

11th minute- Yes, that is Brad Guzan in goal, just a day after playing 45 minutes against Spain in Spain. He landed at Newark airport at 2pm after a nine-hour flight from Barcelona.

—————————————–

8th minute- Red Bulls are knocking it around in the back, but any time they pass it beyond the midfield stripe they lose it.

—————————————–

5th minute- Red Bulls just can’t keep the ball. Chivas is sitting back right now.

—————————————–

2nd minute- And we’re underway here.

—————————————–

PRE-GAME- For those of you wondering, Dave Van Den Bergh’s wife gave birth to a baby boy named Max earlier in the week. He weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces. No word on whether he’s left footed.

—————————————–

PRE-GAME- Red Bulls going with the four-man back-line tonight against a Chivas USA attack that has been playing very well of late. The Goats essentially use three forwards.

—————————————–

PRE-GAME- We’re close to kicking off here.

—————————————–

Comments

  1. Ives – suggestion for a drinking game: drink every time Boyens passes the ball back to Conway. Boyens is awful with the ball at his feet. He must have passed the ball back to Conway 10 times last night and rarely completed a forward pass (he occassionally did connect with Parke). Are Mendes and Brunner really worse than him?

  2. Okay here is my match summary to show how bad our team played tonight… John Wolyniec was the best player on the field, he had the most energy and controlled the ball in the midfield better then anyone else …Sigh

  3. BOOOOORRRRRRIINNNNGGG. I was at the game with the other 100 people (of which I got 10 to come with me) and we were pretty bored by this exhibition. No midfield play through the center, no possession whatsoever. Does anyone have an estimate for the highest # of passes strung together for either team? 3 or 4, maybe 5? This team stinks and unfortunately they’re boring too. I never thought I’d say this, but LA stinks, but at least they’re not boring. Not quite sexy but more stimulating than this bunch.

Jozy is gone, Osorio inspires boredom, and Red Bull front office doesn’t know anything about how to put together a soccer team. Yeehaw.

  4. David Berger,

Are you watching the same games as everyone else? The Red Bull defense, of which Boyens and Leitch were members tonight, gave up no goals and 3 shots on goal the whole match. The same contingent was also excellent last game, despite being under fire for 90 minutes due to our sad midfield play.

Didn’t Hunter Freeman participate in, and significantly contribute to, the 5-1 loss to Chicago 2 weeks ago (the worst loss in club history in several years)? I mean, Freeman was solely responsible for 2 of those goals. I don’t care of he plays for the US Olympic team or a recreational pickup team, if he’s on the field as a defender, he’s got to defend. That’s what he gets paid to do. Until he does, the best defending personnel start, and right now, they are the ones not allowing chances or goals. Not Freeman.

You need to open your eyes buddy. If you are going to criticize the Red Bull play tonight, please look at the offense and midfield, which are now the worst in the league with the departure of Altidore.

  5. We need an attacking midfielder, Magee is not a MLS player. Leitch and Boyens should not be starting. Why the hell is Freeman not playing. Put Freeman in Leitch’s spot and Mendes in Boyens. They can’t do any worse than Leitch and Boyens who suck.

  6. MiamiAl –

They stated during the game that a natural surface will be installed for the game Sunday for the US v Argentina match. It’s too bad they can’t put it down for the entire summer like they did a few years back (my memory serves me right on that, correct?).

  7. 3 big miracle points – but I really hate having only 1 forward. 3e/4’s of the time Angel was off sides and there sure wasn’t anyone else in the area to help him. We stink and having 3 upcoming games in 1 week is gonna kill us. I blame the league for this – they seem to have no regard for the health of the players.

  8. Regular season wins don’t get bigger than this one. Having said that, it’s not a good sign that all I’m left with is 3 points and a thousand question marks.

Juan Pablo barely limping off the field, Dane Richards carried off by the cart literally crying. That’s just never, ever a good sign. He waived to us as they drove him by and we cheered but he so obviously had something very, very wrong. F*** that Salzburg scrub who ripped up his leg.

  9. Any status on JPA? Geez the Red Bulls should open a hospital instead of Red Bull Park….just has been that kind of year.

  10. So Jozy will not get to say goodbye to the fans…I am a bit upset. I would not have been able to go to tonight’s game anyhow, but I am surprise Osorio did not allow him to at least get 10 mins at the end, or so.

    Good Luck Jozy! and Farewell!!

  11. How many times are two Red Bulls gonna look at each other with the ball in between them, while a Chivas player comes and takes it away. I’ve seriously lost count. Raise the damn cap. I can’t watch this crap anymore.

  12. It just hit me. Our team sucks and I’m very tired of seeing the same crap year after year. We cannot compete with our current roster, especially now that Jozy is gone.

  13. I’m just getting really tired of watching our team. I feel like I’m watching baseball. I’m so bored. There is no excitement on our team anymore.

  14. anyone else getting tired of watching long high balls bouncing everywhere all the time. it seems like they’re playing hacky sack out there

  15. With the exception of Klestan’s opportunity at the end of the half, defense looks great. On the other end, well, I don’t know what to say. I’ve seen way to much soccer recently when my team has no idea of what to do with the ball when they have it.

Would have liked to have seen Jozy, but I don’t think he’s trained so I’d rather have him resy up for the Argies.

lol. what you said about Jozy’s interview skills reminds me of the scene in Bull Durham where Kevin Costner is teaching Tim Robbins how to deal with the press. “Well, I’m just here to help the team …”

  18. Is anyone dissappointed with Angel? I am. I know he’s not getting much help, but I don’t think he got help last year either.

  19. That was the best sequence by the Bulls so far – Stammler with a great ball to Richards, who passes it low, collects the rebound, lofts it up and forces Guzan to finger tip it and chase it down himself…

  20. Mendoza took too long to decide whether he’d shoot or what. he would have had a great chance if he shot after his touch across the box.

  21. No. Jozy already mastered the art of saying something that doesn’t say anything. He’s well on his way on becoming a world star.

  23. Anyone else think JCO is giving Jozy the same treatment Capello did when Beckham announced his deal with the Galaxy?

JCO: “Jozy will never play for New York again. He is going to Spain to become some kind of real footballer.”

  24. I’m starting to believe the thought that NYRB is a cursed franchise. They get the coach they want but the team is even more terrible than last season. Great soccer minds just turn to mush when they get hired by the Metrostars.

  25. Talk about self-destruction. It looks like JCO made a deal with the devil and he is still secretly coaching Chicago and doing whatever he can to run RBNY into the ground. I think you Red Bull fans can oficially consider thisa “rebuilding year.”

  27. I think a 4-3-3/4-5-1 with Borman and Richards on the wings is the best formation for the Red Bulls moving forward.

  28. We’re losing Altidore the phenom. We should be bumped up in the allocation list and get McBride. Can you imagine how pricelessly fitting that would be after Chicago stealing Marmol and refusing to give up Conde.

  29. I really do need an explanation. This will absolutely terrible if the fans aren’t allowed a farewell performance. He doesn’t have to start or anything, but the fans need to be able to say thank you and goodbye. Their better be one coming or there will be many extremely unhappy people.

Also, ugh – no Echeverry. We need to sign another forward now. The list keeps growing.

  30. Osorio is a piece of ****, how could he leave Jozy off the bench for this game? First of all, they’re better with him so at least they could try to beat Chivas tonight. Second of all, what a message he’s sending to a young player who made a great decision for his career! This is potentially our best future striker, and he doesn’t allow him a farewell appearance to say goodbye to NJ-based fans? Fire him right away. Tonight, if they lose, I want him gone.
