Former U.S. national team and FC Dallas defender Cory Gibbs completed a deal to play in MLS on Friday, a league source confirmed to SBI. What remains to be seen is just which club he will play for.
Gibbs finalized his contract with the league on Friday, which now paves the way for Gibbs to be allocated to a team. The Los Angeles Galaxy, which currently holds the top spot in the allocation order, is in need of defensive help but must still be able to fit Gibbs new contract into its salary cap, which could be an issue.
Colorado and New England hold the next two spots in the allocation order, but neither appears a likely destination for the oft-injured 28-year old defender. That leaves the Red Bulls and FC Dallas, which have both added several new players already in the past month.
That leaves Chivas USA, which could use a defender like Gibbs.
Gibbs left MLS after the 2004 season to join Dutch power Feyenoord. He enjoyed a strong half season with the Dutch club before injuries began plaguing him. He moved to English club Charlton Athletic but never played a game for the team because of injuries.
What do you think about Gibbs returning to MLS? Where do you think Gibbs should go?

Good news about Cory Gibbs. He just needs to find a place where he can get some minutes and continue to get back into playing form. I’m looking forward to seeing if he can continue to make a come-back.
Cory Gibbs = Damaged Goods, ’nuff said.
oh please let it be NY!
Last summer, while recovering from his knee injury, Gibbs trained with the Revolution. New England’s trade with Noonan included New England moving up to #3 in the allocation order. Parkhurst’s contract is up at the end of the season and he is interested in moving to Europe. Gibbs is versatile with substantial center defender experience. New England still has allocation money from the Dempsey transfer and is under the salary cap. Hilgenbrinck retired, so the Revolution may want more defensive cover this season with a congested fall schedule. New England seems like a logical destination.
Why wouldn’t New England be a likely destination? They’re super-thin across the back and could need all the help they can get.
If he can stay healthy, and I think he will, he starts for the US in 2010.
i could see CG in a RBNY uniform with Parke and Cichero
LA Can have the black John Obrien.
TFC just dumped major salary with cunningham leaving..could that pave the way for Ruiz going there??
As a NY supporter, I would like to have him. But in all reasonableness, I don’t think his knees would last very long on turf. Tough call. We could definitely use an upgrade at centerback though, to partner with Cichero.
Hey, we deserve to have roster exceptions made here in L.A. Our front office doesn’t know what they’re doing.
I don’t know if we really want Gibbs on our squad… I mean we have Troy Roberts and some guy from South America that I had never heard of and got burned by Kenny Cooper all game long… Yeah we need Gibbs..
Gee I don’t know if LA would find a way to make it work with the league the way it is an all. They rarely have player moves work out in their favor or get 3 DP’s for the price of 1 despite it supposedly not being allowed and all. I hope they find some resolution to an un-resolvable problem.

Gibbs is better than the average MLS defender and doesn’t use one of the valuable foreign player slots; therefore, it’s a no-brainer for the league to sign him.
IF CG can stay injury free (which he did in his last stint in MLS playing 21 games for Dallas) and find a stable situation, he could become one of the top defenders in the league.
I am happy that he is back in MLS.
Corry Gibbs…the man that was made of glass. Any team that takes him on better have a back up plan.
Send him to LA! Down with salary caps!
BTW – where in the world is John O’Brien? Where? Wasn’t he with Chivas?
I would actually like to see him play for LA, if Beckham’s team doesn’t be competitive for the MLS Cup, I fear that could take the air out of the Beckham effect.
Man, what 2006 could have been w/ Cory Gibbs. Did he and John O’Brien not drink ANY milk as kids?
Gibbs’ wife is a R&B singer from England so it sounds like he will be Galaxy-bound and she will be another Posh Spice in the HDC Luxury Suites.
Looks like LA wants Gibbs, and Gibbs wants Chivas USA; this is going to be the McBride saga all over again.

Parkhurst will definitely be leaving MLS at the end of the season. Why wouldn’t the Revs look to sign Gibbs for more defensive depth? They sure as heck have the cap space and Gibbs played college soccer right down the road at Brown.
Seems like a good fit.
Well, Garber would be considered a league source, wouldn’t he? 🙂
Sources? MLSnet.com/Don Garber’s blog says it already! It’s no secret.
LA will find a way to get this to work.
They are ditching Donovan, Ruiz, or maybe even both.
Him and Franklin would make a good combo as CB’s.
Do MLS clubs get the benefit of a medical before deciding whether to offer a contract? If it can be determined that Gibbs does not have a chronic, career-threatening problem, I don’t see why the Revs wouldn’t consider making a move. He would make sense as the left-sided defender in their three-man backline.
