International Match Day

Cristiano_ronaldo_ap

If you have been craving some quality international soccer, then today is your day.

With an international fixture date on the menu, you will not only get some important CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, you will also get some attractive friendlies on the docket.

Mexico takes on Honduras with a chance to knock the Catrachos out of next year’s qualifying with a win and a Jamaica win against Canada. Trinidad & Tobago can lock up a place in the Hexagonal round of CONCACAF qualifying with a win or tie against Cuba. If T&T loses, then Guatemala can slip into the Hexagonal with a victory against an inexperienced USA B team.

Friendlies offer up some quality match-ups as well, with England and Germany renewing their long-standing rivalry, while Brazil and Portugal square off.

  1. Another goal for Japan. Tanaka gets all his hard work payed off. Off a great cross from Nakamura. then a great header at a tough angle. 3-0 Japan.

  2. Does anybody know a website that is streaming the US vs Guatemala game. Like most people, I don’t have ESPN classic (or any cable)?

  3. Could you put these times up like 48 hours in advance? I keep reading about these games going on right now but I can’t get home and record any of them.

  4. Im hoping Torres can get a hat trick in the game against Chile. Villa always seems to still his thunder during international games for Spain.

  5. Im in Stockholm but from Louisiana. Hoping for Sweden to win but i also strongly favor the Dutch. Should be a very good game though.

  6. The Sweden-Holland game is just about to start. Dirk Kuyt is up front for Holland and Babel and Van Persie are on the wing.

  7. Hey Ives, what happened to the weekend americans abroad wrap up this week? Did I just miss it? I saw the post about Bradley’s goal, but I don’t think the other stuff came up. Didn’t Subotic score twice?

  8. Well, normally I don’t agree with Keith Costigan about ANYTHING but the Saudi’s were rather hard done by the final of 2-0 for Korea. Korea played well but that referee’s decision was questionable to say the least. It MAY have been penalty and there WAS contact by the keeper on the Saudi striker but even if not a penalty, the booking for simulation was harsh.

  9. Anybody see that amazing simulation call in the Saudi-Korea game?

Nothing like a ref deciding the outcome of a game. I can’t imagine a call that could possibly have more significance than denying a penalty AND booking the attacker for simulation…2nd yellow…down to 10 men for the Saudis. Sheesh.

  10. yes U-20 womens wc is on the “deuce” (do they still call it that?) at 1pm. USMNT is on classic at 8pm EST and replayed in HD on epsn 2 at 10 following college b-ball. Game of the day is easily Portugal-Brazil. For me, not becuase of the Ronaldo/Kaka matchup but werent these 2 teams supposed to be setting the world on fire right about now? Brazil looks old and disinterested and Portugal looks like they are suffering growing pains under new coach Quieroz. The losing coach of this game will face some serious heat back home and if Brazil get beat again, the clock will be running on Dunga especially if Argentina perform well under Maradona today.

  11. FSC’s entire budget must be sunk into the EPL and serie A, because they get the worst internationals. It’s interesting that ESPN is broadcasting a non-USA international game. I would’ve gone all out to get Portugal-Brazil and marketed the crap out of that. Italy-Greece could be pretty boring.

  12. It says something when Italy and Greece are on a channel almost everybody in the nation gets while the U.S. qualifier (albeit an unimportant one) is relegated to ESPN Classic.

  13. I had no idea that Portugal plays Brazil today. Living in Portugal is paying off. I’m going to record it tonight and watch it tomorrow.

  14. Or, what the above posts say.

BTW, I don’t get ESPN Desportes, but the ESPN listings say it is showing Argentina-Scotland and France-Uruguay.

  15. I don’t think the England-Germany game is on FSC (I think you just put it there as a typo as you also have the two Asian WCqs that are scheduled at the same time)…

And my TIVO is saying that Greece-Italy is on ESPN2 at 4:30 EST? Anyone else seeing this? I confirmed it by going to espn.com and it is indeed on, as is the USA women in the U-20 WC, so you could add that to the televised games, seems like a big step for ESPN to televise an international friendly, too bad it isn’t the England-Germany match instead…

  16. That sucks…I didn’t check the TV schedule when I was setting up the DVR last night, otherwise I would have taped the England-Germany game.
