Red Bulls defender Carlos Johnson is set to miss a considerable amount of time after being diagnosed with a broken left foot on Saturday night. The club revealed the injury after the Red Bulls 1-1 tie vs. Houston.
Johnson suffered the injury after being tackled by Houston midfielder Stuart Holden in the first half. Holden was called for a foul, but did not receive a card. Johnson was taken to a local hospital for x-rays, which revealed the break. Details of the injury were not yet available.
Johnson's injury means the Red Bulls will turn to rookie Jeremy Hall, who was impressive at right back earlier in the season.
What do you think of Johnson's injury? Think Holden should have been issued a yellow card, or a red, for the foul that broke Johnson's foot? Do you see Hall stepping up and making the right back spot his own?

In the first game against houston, which was johnson’s first game, holden and the other left sided player were ganign up on him the whole game. they never got carded. then near the end of the game johnson gave that doosh bag holden a nice hard tackle ( deserving of a foul ) and he got red carded. then in this last game holden breaks johnson’s foot. hmmmm…..there might be a connection there.
i think holden is still making up for
getting his butt kicked in england (probably for being the same prick he’s shown himself to be here ) and he’s trying to make up for his deficiencies by playing the enforcers role.
commenting on Hall’s position: he may not have been a natural left mid, but he scored plenty of goals from there. and, jeez, we need more goals. but if it means he’s on the field in right back, i’ll take him there over not having him play at all. who can figure why osorio wouldn’t have kept him on the pitch all along as he’s done nothing but prove himself. who can figure anything these days?
Clear foul? Yes. Cardworthy? No. It’s a physical game. Can’t hang, get off the pitch. Chippy? Thug? How bout the NY supporters behind goal clapping after Rojas is sent off. Clear foul? Yes. Cardworthy? Definitely. Keep it classy NJ.
Speaking objectively, (not a fan of NYRB or Houston) I really don’t know where all the talk about Stuart Holden being a “thug” or “dirty player” is coming from.
I really don’t like dirty players, as opposed to those people who like to think they’re macho by supporting dirty players with comments like “It’s a man’s game!”. Even allowing for my opinion that we need to crack down on thugs, I don’t see Stuart Holden as that type of player. I’ve watched Houston play MANY times. How did I miss it? I think it’s more of a case of NYRB fans labeling him a thug based on one or two things that happened when they played Houston. As for you people calling for him to get his just desserts, the reason Holden is here and not playing in England is because he was severely beaten outside an English pub for no particular reason. Is that good enough, or does he need another fractured eye socket?
The injury most likely occurred because the joke of a field they have. The injury looked to occur because of the unforgiving turf. He ankle caught the turf and caused the injury.
figures this would happen, i mean after all we are the red bulls, if we aren’t getting red cards or blowing late leads, than we’re getting injured. I though johnson played very well as of late, hall will do well in his absence but this means that khano now has a better chance of playing in the midfield which is a very bad thing.
As a Red Bull fan I didnt think the foul deserved a card its called playing soccer but this injury is a MAJOR blow because now Khano Smith will start getting playing time. I hope we instead play a 4-3-3 with
Hall Petke Goldy Pacheco
Stammler Celedas Ubi
Kandji Angel Woly/Oduro
*I would go with Woly but knowing JCO he might want a lefty in left striker
Alex, the choice is not between a free-flowing game or a ticky-tack game with lots of foul whistles. Referees can play on and then whistle (and card) for persistent actions. Early (and consistent) decisions help set the tone for the game.
Furthermore, a really smart ref follows the game and does more than enforce the rules. They know if one team coming in is on a losing streak and has been encouraged to play harder and more aggressive (and thus, may be over the top). Or if another team’s tactics to a skilled player is to foul off the ball. Or another team has a rep of looking for ways to kill restarts (always handling the opposing team’s ball on a throw-in). Or if two players have a history and are continuing last game’s history in this match. Smart, savvy refs remember what it was like to play and bring that to the match. That’s why the continual stuff that Ruiz got away with was such a damning indictment of MLS refs–because all of us who’ve played have all know at least one really dirty player who delighted in doing stuff off the ball and came to anticipate his foot stomps, dives, elbows far away from the ball, punches in the middle of corner scrums. And a game-savvy ref knows to look for that. Well, anyone who followed the previous Houston-RBNY match knew that these two (Johnson and Holden) had a thing going on–so it pays to intervene early to prevent it from getting out of hand.
RBNY fans, look at the replay. It wasn’t a dirty tackle. I know it sucks when one of your own gets injured but this was not a blatant red card.
I thought I would pile on, but the red card jokes have been made.
His absence won’t be noticed.
Whoops, couldn’t help myself.
no card deserved, Hall couldn’t control a bad pass. Holden went for it.
NYRB needs to learn how to play soccer. its a becoming a rivalry. bunker down defense on the road, watering down field turf for a home game.
Let me tell you, my friends. In my day, we had one or two guys on the team who had no talent at all. When a player like Holden hurt one of our players, we’d get even. We’d build up a nice lead and when the game was save, we’d let our talentless player come onto the field and send the opposing player, the Holden-type, to to the hospital. Then Giorgio would go visit the player in the hospital, meet up with his wife and let’s just say, that would more than make up for the foul, mt friends.
What a loss; and yet another crap call from the referee. Holden was just as much of a little sh** last time we played Houston. Really, I hate Houston even more than I hate DC these days. And the feeling seems to be mutual. Bunch of talentless thugs in orange; worst champions ever. Rosorio was the one touch of class they had.
League needs to review this and discipline Holden. Shocking ref. Rojas deserved to be sent off but this ref gave us nothing all night.
It wasn’t a tackle – it was a flat-out stomp. The only reason why a card wasn’t given was because Johnson didn’t crumple into a fetal position and cry like a little girl (or Blanco).
I thought most people wanted a free flowing game? The only way to do that is to not call every tiicky tck foul. If the team has the advantage then you play on. I saw the foul I don’t think it was dirty at all, I love how everyone thinks that this sort of contct wouldn’t be allowed in any other league, completly false, I watched dempsey get mugged in the penalty area yesterday and there was no call. Soccer is a contact sport and this league is physical the only way to curve it is to issue more cards which the majority of people here just a week ago where complaining about i thought the games yestarday where officiated well some questionable calls but until there are challenges or instant replay get used to it.
i am neither a dynamo or red bulls fan, but I do have to say that when I have seen Holden play, he seems like a bit of a jerk on the field.
It would be nice if MLS reviewed the tape and actually did something to Holden. Houston was chippy all night and the ref let it play on.
You have to figure that this is a play that the league disciplinary committee will take a second look at and evaluate if the injury was a result of a continuation from the previous game.
And I agree it’s bad news for RBNY. It increases the likelihood that Khano Smith will see PT. Rojas is already out of the next game, it’s not like he’ll be replaced by Hall–Khano Smith is the automatic choice. And now in any game where Rojas plays CAM, Khano has to play the left side.
Holden n johnson both have their own rivaraly , if you notice the previous time we played houston they were going at it, and even be4 the foul you see holden playing way to aggressive with Johnson. He should have been carded be4 so stupid stuff like that gets prevented from hapenning. I can’t blv ref didn’t card him all game when commitdd 5 fouls. MLS should def consider viewing the replay and punishing Holden because he deserves a punishment, he is a dirty player. Hope Johnson gets better, but good thing we have hall for now to hold thing down. One more thing , WTF was rojas thinking?!?
Holden had a reckless tackle on Stammler that led up to the Dynamo goal. Wasn’t called because Seth escaped it barely, and kept possesion, passed it to someone else, who promptly lost it, and let Ashe get it. Holden is a cheap shot chump who gets away with things because he’s a pretty boy, and refs think someone who looks that much like a girl can’t be dirty. Here’s to hoping he gets some of his own medicine sometime soon!
You talk about this but you don’t mention Rojas going friggin nuts?
Stuart Holden is a dirty little player…hopefully this will shine some light on how dirty this little schmuck really is.
if its not a red card its a broken foot. walk it off carlos put some kinesio tape on it and lets do this
Can you say bad signing?
Too bad for Johnson and yayy for Hall. He may not be a natural RB player but he sure is better than Johnson
ugh that sucks so bad. C. Johnson’s red cards were flukes i feel like and since he’s done well to adjust to the game and get better and better the more he saw the field. and yeah while Jeremy Hall is great and it’s not that big of deal yet it still sucky to see this happen to a player and it sucks that it halts all the progress Johnson’s made. plus he has a mean throw-in.
Tough turn for Johnson. He was a real gamer to try to continue with a broken foot.
The foul certainly didn’t look caution-worthy. In fact, until I saw the replay, it didn’t look like anything more than a tackle, but the replay showed it to be a clear foul. Not card-worthy though.
RBNY looked to be the 2nd best team (and least aggressive team) on the field until Rojas was dismissed. How does Rojas feel knowing that the team played better as a 10-man unit than as an 11-man unit that included him? How do the Dynamo feel knowing that a 10-man RBNY team was equal to an 11-man Dynamo team?
Ugh, first the free kick foul in the Olympics, now this. Stuart Holden keeps pissing me off.
Tough loss for RBNY. While I love what Hall has shown thus far having both he and Johnson provided some nice depth and gave us options on the back line. Overall I don’t think that Hall will be a drop-off at all.
This is a real shame. I’m one to think that Johnson has an incredible amount of talent on the ball. people are quick to point out his consecutive red cards, both of which were careless mistakes on his part imo. Hall is also a strong right back option but Johnson has more experience.
how many games do you think he’ll miss because of this?
> Who will replace his red cards?
Apparently Jorge Rojas wants that job.
It was a BAD stomp by Holden. I figured Johnson’s foot was broken when I saw the replay. It’s a shame we haven’t really seen what this guy can do. (But I do think Hall might be better.)
This puts a serious damper on Johnson’s quest to set the record for most red card’s in an MLS season.
This kinda blows. I like what Johnson has done so far. One of his red cards was a joke and the other was harsh (he wasn’t the last defender) but he’s got good pace and an cross the ball, and I like him defensively obviously.
Oh well…Hall is good. Just not a natural defender, but I love having him on the pitch as well. Get well soon Carlos.
CBR, I will say this once and maybe people will listen. Jeremy Hall is NOT a natural left midfielder. He played on the left flank at Maryland, but he is not left-footed. His natural position is right winger. If anything, he’s more naturally suited to be an overlapping right back, and played there as a youth national team player.
Who will replace his red cards?
Most would rather see hall at midfield but at least he will now be on the field because the bench is definitely not where he should be.
it FORCES osorio to play Hall at RB instead of his natural position of LM.
all you RBNY fans happy about this injury fail to realize that this increases the chances of seeing Khano Smith at LM
Ah, good ol’ houston Thug-amos. So sad that Holden has a good boy image and now Houston is making him a goon.
Friggin Holden, prick.
At least Hall will get his fair share of games. He’s a quick learner and could be of great use for the next few games. This FORCES Osorio to actually make a good choice with the roster.
Good Hall will get a chance. He maybe the only Red Bull who has played well in every game he has gotten into this season.
