New York Red Bulls vs. Houston Dynamo: Live Commentary

Red_bulls_logo2008_019_2

Good evening everybody. The New York Red Bulls are back at Giants Stadium tonight, this time to take on the Houston Dynamo in the latest installment of one of the better East-West rivalries in Major League Soccer.

The Red Bulls tied Houston, 0-0, in Houston last month and will look to build on last week's 4-1 victory against San Jose. That won't be easy against a red-hot Dynamo team riding a four-match unbeaten streak.

I will be providing live commentary throughout the night so please feel free to follow along here. As always, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action.

FINAL– That's all for me. Feel free to share your post-game thoughts and opinions on tonight's match in the comments section below. Good night.

———————–

FINAL– Red Bulls 1, Dynamo 1. The Red Bulls were put in a hole by Jorge Rojas red card, but still scrapped and held together, and even overcame a second-half goal from Houston. A tie at home is normally very disappointing, but the Red Bulls will be happy to walk away from this one with a point.

For those wondering, John Wolyniec's goal was his first regular-season goal since 2007, July 22nd in a 1-0 win against D.C. United.

Lastly, Wolyniec's goal was the first scored against Houston in 491 minutes, the longest streak in the league this season.

———————–

93rd minute– Houston has a nice build-up, but only manage a weak shot. It's OVER. Red Bulls 1, Houston 1.

———————–

92nd minute– Houston is squarely on the back-foot right now.

———————–

91st minute– I am willing to bet a good amount of Red Bulls fans said, "Why are they putting Wolyniec in." Now you know why.

———————–

90th minute– Wolyniec nearly finds a winner but has his shot deflected.

———————–

89th minute– Wolyniec chests a Richards pass, turns and hits a low shot from close range to equalize. Wolyniec officially achieves legend status.

———————–

88th minute- GOAL RED BULLS!!!!!!!! JOHN WOLYNIEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

———————–

85th minute– The additions of Ashe and Wondolowski have given Houston a serious boost of energy in attack and the Red Bulls are chasing here late. Without Celades and Rojas in the game, I can't see this team creating chances late.

———————–

83rd minute– Wolyniec came in for Pacheco, Red Bulls switch to a 3-4-2. Kandji is on the left now. Dynamo won't be easy to crack, even less when a man down.

———————–

81st minute– SAVE CONWAY. Nice diving stop of a hard Holden blast.

———————–

80th minute– Bad job by the Red Bulls to let Ashe get loose on the flank. Now Houston will take the air out of the ball and be happy with a 1-0 result.

———————–

79th minute- GOAL HOUSTON!!! Chris Wondolowski finishes a great Ashe cross. Dynamo 1, Red Bulls 0.

———————–

77th minute– Here's a question. When was the last time the Red Bulls scored a late game-winner?

———————–

74th minute– Richards comes in for Celades. Ashe is coming in for Chabala and will play left back.

———————–

74th minute– Dane Richards is set to come in, and Houston is responding with Corey Ashe, who will look to shadow the Jamaican speedster.

———————–

71st minute– You know, I didn't think the first meeting between these teams couldn't be topped as worst game of the season to watch, but this game is getting close.

———————–

68th minute– Tonight's attendance is 14,647. A decent crowd tonight by 2009 standards.

———————–

66th minute– Chris Wondolowski is coming in for Akinbiyi. Yes, he played in this game. No, really.

———————–

63rd minute– Red Bulls waste the corner (shocker). Angel did have his best moment of the match right there though so perhaps he's ready to take over.

———————–

63rd minute– Great sequence from Angel, Celades and Ubiparipovic, leads to a Red Bulls corner kick.

———————–

60th minute– Dynamo corner.

———————–

58th minute– Starting to change my mind on the "Ubiparipovic is playing well" theme. He keeps forcing bad passes. Richards should come in soon.

———————–

56th minute– Second-half drinking games: Kandji turnovers, Dynamo professional fouls and wasted Red Bulls corner kicks.

———————–

54th minute-Not sure why, but if Houston finds a winner here I see Mullan scoring it or having a major hand in it.

———————–

51st minute– Will we see Dane Richards today? Tough to say. Ubiparipovic has played well today.

———————–

50th minute– Houston will look to play more through the midfield. Right now they're pumping balls in from the wing but that plays into what the Red Bulls can handle. Holden needs to start going at Stammler and the Red Bulls back-line.

———————–

47th minute– Houston will be putting major pressure on early this half. The Red Bulls don't need to change too much. If anything, Pacheco stays up a bit and the Red Bulls play more of a 3-4-2.

———————–

46th minute– No changes for either.

———————–

46th minute– And we're back.

———————–

HALFTIME– Red Bulls 0, Dynamo 0.

———————–

45th minute– Petke nearly costs his team a goal but gets pushed before a costly gaffe.

———————–

45th minute– Red Bulls ned to kill off this last two minutes of stoppage so they can regroup.

———————–

45th minute– The replay shows Kandji took an elbow to the face. He gets some treatment and had his mouth bloodied. No card.

———————–

43rd minute– The ref is letting a lot of physical play go. Not sure that bodes well for the Red Bulls.

———————–

41st minute– Kandji inexplicably takes a sharp angle shot instead of dishing to a wide open Angel.

Red Bulls corner.

———————–

40th minute– Ubiparipovic makes a nice move to send a cross in. First we've seen from him tonight.

Those wondering about a tactical adjustment, looks like the Red Bulls will simply play without a left winger and have Pacheco hold down that side.

———————–

38th minute– Terrible loss of composure by Rojas there. Now the Red Bulls will be in danger of being picked apart. On the bright side, it might actually mean that Houston comes out and attacks more.

———————–

36th minute– Angel gets a yellow for protesting (probably wondering where the yellow to Mullan was for pushing Rojas as he was on the ball).

———————–

35th minute– RED CARD!! Jorge Rojas is sent off for elbowing Brian Mullan.

———————–

34th minute– Johnson left the match with a left foot sprain.

———————–

33rd minute– Wow, not sure how Houston didn't score there. Loos ball in front of goal, Conway on the ground, but no Dynamo player can bury it.

———————–

32nd minute– Houston with a corner.

———————–

29th minute– The Dynamo are finding some success down the right flank. Pacheco has his hands full because Rojas isn't exactly a two-way midfielder.

———————–

27th minute– Double yellows for Akinbiyi and Goldthwaite after some handbags. Way to set the tone referee Baldomero Toledo.

———————–

26th minute– Hall is coming in for Johnson and the Red Bulls have a corner kick after a nice turn and run by Kandji.

———————–

25th minute– Holden is giving the Red Bulls some fits. He's floating all over and nobody is picking up his runs.

———————–

22nd minute– Johnson is limping off and Jeremy Hall is warming up. Johnson was fouled hard by Stuart Holden. A bit of carryover from their last meeting I think.

———————–

20th minute– Some drinking games for the first half. Kandji ball tricks, Holden-Johnson clashes and Kamara whining to the referee.

———————–

18th minute– CONWAY SAVE!!! Nice work to make a diving stop on a Cameron header.

———————–

14th minute– That was Pacheco who allowed Mullan space to get in behind him on the cross. Pacheco will need to focus or he will get beaten.

———————–

14th minute– Dynamo with a dangerous ball in but nobody can get to it. Houston corner.

———————–

12th minute– It will be interesting to see whether Mike Chabala can handle the overlapping runs of Carlos Johnson. Count me as someone disappointed that we aren't seeing Dane Richards against his favorite team.

———————–

9th minute– The key match-ups to watch tonight are Clark vs. Celades and Pacheco vs. Mullan. Two VERY good match-ups.

———————–

9th minute– Dynamo corner produces a Boswell header, but he sends it over the bar.

Here is Houston's lineup:

—————Akinbiyi——Kamara—————

————————Holden———————

Davis—————————————Mullan

————————-Clark———————

Chabala——–Boswell—–Cameron——Hainault

———————–Onstad————————

BENCH– Hall, James, Waibel, Ashe, Cruz, Ching, Wondolowski

———————–

5th minute– Dynamo will look to sit back and absorb some early pressure, with an eye toward catching NY on the counter. Red Bulls need to make the most of the early possession.

———————–

3rd minute– Here is the REd Bulls lineup:

————–Angel——–Kandji—————-

———————Celades———————-

——-Rojas——————-Ubiparipovic—–

———————Stammler——————-

Pacheco——Goldthwaite—Petke—-Johnson

———————-Conway———————

BENCH– Cepero, Mendes, Borman, Hall, Pietravallo, Richards, Wolyniec

———————–

1st Minute- And we're off. No Brian Ching for the Dynamo. He's nursing a tight hamstring (actually, it's probably mykneescan'ttaketurf-itis).

———————–

PRE-GAME– The REd Bulls will field the same lineup that beat San jose, with the one exception being Jon Conway replacing Danny Cepero, who is out with a hand injury.

  1. “Chris Wondolowski is coming in for Akinbiyi. Yes, he played in this game. No, really.

He (Akinbiyi)scored a goal. Too bad, MLS refs have no business being on the field.

Have you watched any Seattle matches this season?

  3. @Michael

you could watch manu and barcelona all year and watching everton and wigan would be difficult to watch…

the hand balls were ball to hand the replays clearly show that the players arms were close to their body. But I agree the turf has to go, the toronto game was so affected by the soaked turf the players looked like they where skating out there

  4. Georgio @ 11:06 — you still have style! 😉

Thought it was a scrappy performance by NYRB. Nice to see the late goal go our way for a change.

But Pacheco was totally ball-watching on the goal when all he had to do was mark his man. I’m worried that he just isn’t that good.

  5. That was a very nice goal Woly scored. Reminded me of one I scored against Fort Lauderdale in 1978.

If you get in the box and the ball comes near you, push, scrape, do whatever it takes, but score the goal.

    Bellissimo, Johnny! Bravo!

Goals are a lot like women. If you keep after them, eventually you’ll score.

And trust me, my friends, I know all about scoring. No one scored more goals in the history of the North American Soccer league tan me. As for the women? Even more than the goals, my friends.

  6. After watching Man U play all season and Barca, watching RBNY gets harder and harder. But they did do well tonight to scrap back a man down.

  7. Haig/Joe: JCO isn’t my favorite person on earth but give it a frickin’ rest guys. All of these STRAIGHT red cards, and none of them–not a single one–is not arguable.

You guys are crazy, and this is coming from a guy who has no qualms whatsoever about taking a dump on the Red Bulls when I think they deserve it.

  8. Anyone have an accurate account of uncalled Dynamo handballs? My approximate count is 5-8, but that was from the stands.

After all of the bullsh I saw today from the entire officiating team, all I can say is this: Woly.

P.S. Mr. Kinnear, suck it. Jaw at us all you want, your team was up a man and the ref did everything he could to give you the game, and your players dived, and all you got was a point.

  9. Are you kidding? First off, a draw is a result. Stagnant Houston offense? On that beat up cement you guys call a field? With Conway making hella saves? Who cares if it was against 10, NY played 10 times better AFTER Rojas went off.

  10. 1. I have to agree with Haig’s post about red cards and coaching. When so many different players in so many different roles have issues with red cards, you have to give a lot of responsibility to the coach and both the instruction pre-game and the mindset of the team. It’s not like these are red cards on a Petke for hauling down a faster player or a Stammler on a tactical foul. Those red cards you expect to see some of and all teams get them. This team is getting ejections for retaliation, for losing cool, for being out of control on a tackle, for not reading the ref’s handle on the game. I’m sure JCO would say it’s just inconsistent MLS reffing but if that we true, it would all equal out.

    2. Probably a good result for RBNY. Houston is playing well and regardless of the ejection, to get a point and a goal against Houston is something that would make the team feel better about where they are. That said, the East is tough this year, Columbus is getting their act together now and teams need to get the 3 points when they’re home.

  11. I bet these next 2/3 (if he is suspended multiple games) games w/o Rojas we pick up significant points, crazy how better we play without him.

    Reply
  12. Wow. RBNY pull a point out of their ‘nether region. Can’t wait to see the lineup without Rojas. I wonder if Osorio will give him some bench splinters even after the next game he has to sit out. I hope Carlos Johnson is able to play so we may get a chance to see Hall on the Left side, otherwise it’s back to Kano……..and you know what that means.

  13. Mrs. Haig is Polish and cheers for Wolyniec. Not the most skilled player, but he’s a Metro for Life. Love the guy.

  14. nice job Red Bulls keeping it together, Woly that was a real classy goal, Rojas you are a gigantic bonehead deserved that red.

  15. How bad is Houston’s offense if they can’t manage a result against a 10 man NY? They look just plain… stagnant. I guess they miss DeRo after all huh?

  16. In the speed vs. speed battle Houston wins. Both Richards and Hall get caught up field leaving that entire side of the field open for Ashe to deliver a pin point cross.

  17. You could say that it’s unlucky to get so many red cards in the first part of the yeah, but it’s actually because of poor coaching.

  18. Thanks Ives…decent crowd I guess. Particularly, like you said, considering the poor attendance so far this year.

  19. With their bespectacled reporter mentioning Coach Hyndman was willing to play new players early if needed, Brek Shea comes on in the 24th for Jeff Cunningham down 1-0.

  20. Anybody who dribbles toward his own goal as much as that mullet wearing hobbit douche baggins mofo is a douche.
but Holden aka Naruto is a douche too. because he is. and Mullan’s a faker and a beeyotch. and Toledo is a sucker.

  21. I think Rojas gets 3 games for his explosion. Flagrant contact to the head with his elbow, also coming back on to the field to confront Onstad, you can’t do that…

  22. Even though i’m not a red bull fan making Johnson walk like that is messed up.

How in the hell do we not score there? I hope it’s not a game where we have a million chances and no goals.
