The next step in Charlie Davies' recovery from multiple major injuries is set to begin on Monday, when the U.S. national team striker is slated to begin training with FC Sochaux.

French publication L'Equipe reported on Thursday that Davies was set to leave the Cape Breton rehabilitation facility on Friday and will begin training with Sochaux on Monday.

Davies confirmed the news on his Twitter feed, saying, "It's official! I'm done with rehab!!! Leaving for Sochaux tomorrow!"

  1. Great New for CD9………I remember after the accident I printed off the #9 and put on my wall at work. CD9 is the epitome of USA squad, good work rate and dedicated but at the same time respectful. I love this USA squad.

and I missed that Dempsey goal, I turned to something else at halftime, now i’m hating myself!!

  2. True Isaac but if you remember the goal that put him on the map as far as the senior team was the goal vs Egypt where he made that chance pretty much on his own. He made something out of nothing and that is something you can’t teach that is mental and has helped him get back and unlike his game shape/pace is probably even stronger after this comeback.

  3. He needs to be on the roster for WC not matter what. Right now we are loking at a bunch of scrubs to replace him. He needs to be there for inspiration even if he’s not able to play to his pre-injury ability. His presence will represent the UMNT’s commitment to hard work, preserverence and over coming the odds. If he can’t go we always have Deauce and LD who can play up top.

  4. Awesome! Even if he can’t get back to 100% it’s good that the kid overcame so much. That being said I hope he does make it back. The US is much better with him out there.

  5. Nevermind. BBC liked it:

Fulham goal: Stunning, just stunning. With the Juve defence backing off on the edge of the area, Clint Dempsey lets fly with an exquisite chip that leaves Antonio Chimenti standing as it flies into the top corner of the net. Fulham lead on aggregate, with five minutes to go. You could not make this up.

  6. I’m not expecting miracles, but it’s really great that he’s going to be able to resume his career. Be an even better story if he can be an impact player in the World Cup, though that gets back into the miraculous.

  7. A guy like Hargreaves hasn’t played since 2008 and O’Brien fell off the map after a series of niggling injuries.

The list goes on about top tier guys that have no heart and only play for the paycheck. Another cat Sicknote whatshisface comes to mind as well.

You just gotta love this story if for no other reason than the purely inspirational values it provides. Kids should look to this measure of dedication and not to overpaid malcontents who think the world owes them something because they play futbol.

  8. If he scores in a US win over England, CD9 should be the lock for SI Athlete of the year. I don’t care if someone hits 90 home runs, this is the most amazing story of the decade.

  9. I’ll reiterate a story i’ve posted on here. The US game after Charlie’s accident, we at O’Brian’s Pub in San Diego got a shirt for him that we all signed with a message. The dude before me wrote, See you in Brazil (alluding to him missing the SA World Cup). I crossed it out and wrote, See you in South Africa.

Why would you write something like that?

  10. Charlie’s recovery defies logic. As an orthopedic resident, I seriously doubted he would be able to play at the top level again when I heard the news in October, let alone make it back for the WC. I figured he’d end up in MLS trying to get back to where he once was.

Thank you Charlie for proving me wrong so far and giving us all hope and inspiration. Continue to defy logic and make it back for May.

Just one more question: If CD9 makes the WC roster and scores, is that the best comeback ever?

  11. This puts him on a mid-April return timeline. That gives him 5-6 games in France plus the 3 USA warm-up matches before the Word Cup.

If he truly has recovered, and is experiencing no pain, Charlie has a reasonable chance to do some damage at the WC.

Whether he can go 90 or not remains to be seen…

  12. Amazing to see Charlie out of rehab. However, the journey is really only half over. While his Confederations Cup and World Cup Qualifying heroics are unforgetable, he’ll need to get playing time and good form in order to be truly on the roster. His manager has already promised to give Chuck-D minutes, the issue now is showing that he has earned them. If past matches have shown us anything, it’s that Charlie is very good at taking chances he’s given, lets just hope that the injury hasn’t changed that.

  13. Call me a doubting Thomas, but I still cannot believe it.

I mean, this guy was almost dead in October, now he’s already training in March?!?!?!

It’s amazing, simply amazing. I still can’t believe he will be an effective player in the World Cup, but wow. Even if he makes the roster, it would be quite an accomplishment.

  15. speaks volumes to the kind of young man he is. Unbelievable he’s come back this far so fast. He’s going to look good in the new WC kits.

  16. Davies could be a top goal scorer at the WC. Seriously he and Altidore have what it takes. They’re no Villa/Torres, but they’ll get it done.

  17. Just remember I predicted CD9 scores the goal that gets us in the 2nd round back against Algeria back in December before the draw! God speed Charlie Davies!

  18. I never ever thought that davies would be getting back to training at the same time (or around) Gooch. Heck of a job by davies, its this type of resilience and work ethic that will have him going far in his career.

  19. Expect a goal or 2 before May.

Hard to score many goals in France but Davies can do it and I believe in him. Maybe he shouldn’t start at the WC but he certaintly needs to be brought off the bench around the 65th minute to terrorize the Algerian/Slovenian defenses.

  20. wow, I cant believe he’s already back. I remember the day of the accident and I thought not only that he was lucky, but that it would be a very long recovery and that more than likely he wouldnt be the same again.

We still cant say if he will be the same, but I’m at least very impressed by his recovery and his will to come back…
