Herculez Gomez is a magician

When you grow up in Las Vegas it is only natural that you pick up some card tricks, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise that U.S. World Cup prospect Herculez Gomez would whip out some tricks during the U.S. team's train ride from Princeton to Hartford.

Here is Gomez showing off the magic skills, courtesy of USSoccer.com:

  1. I think we found our striker team….Josey and Gomez. If we fix our backline….(no JB)we might have a chance to pull 1 win and 1 tie…..

  3. ZOUNDS! IVE GOT IT!

after watching it like 9-10 times, i see the whole thing.

herc asks jozy to place the card somewhere near the middle of the deck. but when herc shuffles the first time, his left hand feeds cards for about a second before his right hand starts feeding. so the left hand (the half where jozy’s card is) is guaranteed on the bottom). then he shuffles normal, but leading with the left hand and alternating cards from each hand, so the bottomost card (the 2) is always on the bottom, (so left hand deck will always be card 1,3,5,7, etc) so then herc goes through the deck until he sees the one card that came before the card jozy put in (standard card trick technique), so he knows when to stop. Then he takes that card and the next card into his pile of rejects (so he has 5) and then at the 1:19-1:20 of the video, you can see there is a 1-2 frame jump in the video, where Herc likely dropped one card from his stack of 5 (to give him 3 rejects and 1 right) you can also hear a reaction from an onlooker, laughing at Herc dropping a card and Herc moving his leg, likely also stepping on the dropped card. he then goes about showing the fakes until he finds the one before the fake, in this case the 2 of clubs. so when jozy shoots down the 2 of clubs the first time, Herc grabs the 2nd bottommost card in that small deck of 4, and puts the 2 back on top. so the first card down on the table is Jozy’s card, and the rest are all rejects.

he then puts them in jozys fist and magic ensues as he exposes the bottomost card to be the card of a manchild. Herc did a good job selling it

im totally rooting for Herculez to light it up in SA

  4. They must have been getting flooded with emails. Good, I’ll be upset if I can’t watch the full match tonight.

  5. Of course, I am being serious. My guess is that it has something to do with playing cards from a casino. Also, while on the topic of mysteries, can anyone explain the ending of LOST?

  6. Huh? Are you saying the team is separated socially by the guys who were born before 85 and those born after? Herc was born in ’82, and Jozy in ’89

  7. magician indeed. Herculez Gomez new nickname should be ‘el mago’ (the magician)

    …assuming he can score goals

the magician and the manchild, a fitting name for a pair of strikers :/

  8. I cannot recall a post containing more bad jokes than this one. It was like hanging out with my grandad and his buddies at the VFW. With the exception of the one about Gomez disappearing and the other about chemistry developing, everyone should be ashamed. By the way, can anyone explain why the cards have a hole in them?

  9. Did they get their own special train? (Those seats look different than the ones on the usual trains to Hartford).

  10. Yeah, I know the link. But last time I was trying to watch a live game and it just wouldn’t load. It was Salt Lake vs Houston. To this day it is not located on the ‘Replay’ section. So maybe that was just a one time issue.

I emailed ESPN about the issue and they replied saying they were aware of the issue and trying to fix it.

  11. Oh I see…I just went to Vegas for the first time a few weeks ago. The only cars I notices were those call girl cards they pass out in the streets.

  12. It’s so great to get videos like this. Seeing guys hang out. I believe during the 2008 Olympics guys like Altidore, Edu, Holden, Rogers, Feilhaber, Adu, Kljestan and Davies rolled together as a pack.

seems 2 camps. those born before 85 and those born after. Though Bradley seems to hang just with his dad

  13. Speaking of Domenech, did you see that he had the bright idea to let everyone race dune buggies as a “Team building experience” in camp the other day? As expected, someone flipped one, and of course it was Gallas who seems to have escaped a broken arm.

  14. Just a hint to the trick. You see the 2 of spade twice the second time Herc goes through the cards. Watch his hands closely

  15. All…the cards all had holes because they are obviously from a prior used deck in Vegas where Herc is from…anyone that has taken the free giveaway cards from the hotels know that they are required to do this in order to avoid card palmers from slipping them into table games and poker rooms…

  16. The cards have holes in them because they were probably used in a casino and sold in their gift shop. They hole punch them so no one tries to sneek them back onto a live game.

  18. Very cool. My daughther really was wowed. Now we need those guys to make balls vanish and appear in the back of the net. Nice to see the boys getting along.

  19. Anyone else notice Jozy’s card having some kind of whole in the middle?

On another note, does anyone know if ESPN3 got their stuff together? A couple of weeks ago I was trying to stream a live MLS game and had no luck.

I’ll be working through at least the first half of tonight’s game and was hoping to start it from the beginning when I got home via ESPN3.
