Manchester United confirmed as MLS All-Star Game opponent

ManUCelebrates (Reuters)

Manchester United will face the MLS All-Stars in this summer's MLS All-Star Game at Reliant Stadium in Houston on July 28th, the league announced on Thursday.

The match will be part of a four-match tour of North America for Manchester United, which will also play exhibition matches in Toronto, Philadelphia and Kansas City.

What do you think of Manchester United as the MLS All-Star Game opponent? Hoping Wayne Rooney is in the lineup? Think the match will be a sellout?

  1. The only positive I could see with the philly game, is that the fans witness how good the back up team of man u is. It may also help the younger players with great potential like jack mac to play against a top quality team.

  2. Assuming all the players who went to the WC get rests. I doubt all of them, but, a second team for the thrill of it, but not close to a second team.

    Macheda-Berbatov

    Giggs-Scholes-Fletcher-Valencia

    Fabio-O’shea-Evans-Rafael

  4. Manchester United could send their youth team and it would still draw a crowd….it’s Manchester United.

I think it’s good business. Who cares that there’s a WC going on? Any team for that matter would be a B team, why not bring the one with the biggest draw?

  5. Hey dumb$hit. You do realize the MLS still needs to make money, right? Name one “scrub” on United’s roster. If you are having the game anyway, why not get the best reserves you can play against? Well done MLS!

  6. To those saying they should have played in Red Bull Arena remember the New York Football Challenge is this summer with 2 EPL teams already lined up:

  7. Is FC Dallas EVER going to play any big teams? Every city in the country and Canada have played some big dogs. FCD – never.

MLS to rout MANU semi resevers 4-1 after we crush England in SA. USA! USA!

Go Blues! One more game to put MANU in 2nd. And back to back FA Cup crowns … I like it.

  9. I just wish they weren’t playing such sub-par MLS teams. I mean, The Union? C’mon, let’s save some face here and send them to play the real teams like the Galaxy, so we don’t have to watch 6-0 blow-outs. The all-stars should hold there own, but those MLS teams are embarrassing choices.

  10. Surprisingly few of their starters are WC-bound. It will be a lineup you could easily see in a league game.

  11. Aside from the Allstars, I wish they were playing some of the better MLS teams. The Galaxy, Crew, Fire, even NY. I hope Kansas can do something, but I see Toronto and Philly getting destroyed.

  12. If can predict ManU coming back next summer, maybe they would have done that. Instead KC’s FO jumped all over this one and will likely add more of the same to the schedule in years to come. Finally, KC getting some of these international friendlies…..way to go, OnGoal. It’s more than a bit surprising that NY, LA, and Seattle all got left off this “tour”.

  13. As a fellow United vet, I couldn’t agree more! However, I can only base on what we have available at the moment and him and Owen are the best we have as strikers when our other boys are off to war in Africa!

Saying that, I’ve thought since the summer that the Owen/Berb tandem would be very effective. One loves creating opportunities, the other loves putting them away.

  14. Yeah – too close to the end of the World Cup for the main stars to be appearing. We won’t see Rooney unless England doesn’t get out of the group stages.

  16. very cool…..I could see MU’s reserves getting a beat down if they don’t bring a few regulars. They should sell this game out, as well as the other domestic matches pretty quick….and I’m sure the other friendly’s will also be held in NFL venues.

Wow, Danny Welbeck & his All-Star gang! All you West Ham Haters — how is this different?

Or are you all delusional enough to think Rooney is going to play 2 weeks into his time off this summer?

    please.

  18. as a Manchester United fan, o certainly hope that Berbatov will have been shown the door long before this game. recent statements by Sir Alex seem to confirm that this will occur.

  19. I was at that game. We “only” got Everton? They are pretty darn good themselves. That was a really great game, tons of excitement, Everton took most of the pressure. Howard made a bunch of great saves. There wasn’t really much more we could have asked for.

Sorry you didn’t get man united, but last year’s game was pretty outstanding.

  20. Finally, KC gets a big-time friendly. About time these other MLS teams not on coastal big markets got some. After all, Seattle cant pay everyone’s bill, and other teams need to build up their fanbase. KC, Crew, and Rapids are definately due a European power each. Perhaps Rapids vs Arsenal too, otherwise they may become the Calgary Rockies…their low attendance cannot possibly last.

And Park captains for Korea so he won’t be there.

  22. I have to imagine they will be missing a bunch of players because of the World Cup. Most teams have given their World Cup participants and extended break and allowed them to skip much of the pre season in the past. That means we are less likely to see players like Rooney, Ferdinand and Nani on the field for the game.

  23. Projected Line-up…

    GK: Foster
DEF: Fabio, Brown, De Laet, Rafael
    MID: Hargreaves, Anderson, Gibson, Obertan
    FWD: Owen, Park

    sad really…

  24. Philadelphia? Kansas City? Are we trying to make it easy for them?

Galaxy VS ManU would have some story appeal. And a game at the New REDBULL Arena would be nice as well!

  25. Living in Salt Lake and attending the game last year makes me crazy that Man U is coming this year and we only got Everton last year! It was a fun game and all, but I LOVE Man U! Besides, who wants to go to Houston in the dead of summer? Ugh!

  26. Yeah, I do recall them losing to Everton. Do I have it right?

Anyway, I think we can beat Man U. I would even go as far as to say I would bet on it. They will not be in top form and will rely on their subs. While those subs would probably be all stars in the MLS, they will be trying to prove different things to different coaches and I suspect MLS will still be fighting mad to shake off it’s 3rd tier image.

  27. Do you know if Man U is planning on any other matches while in the States? Maybe vs the Chicago Fire 🙂

  28. Unbeaten? They lost to Everton last year!

(SBI-Technically, it was a tie. They had PKs to give the fans a winner, but I’ll take that line out to avoid any confusion.)
