Montero’s late winner topples Red Bulls

The New York Red Bulls and Seattle Sounders were locked in an even match that saw few chances between either side on Saturday, but Fredy Montero came off the bench to remind us why he's one of the most dangerous strikers in Major League Soccer.

Montero's 85th-minute strike helped give the Sounders a 1-0 victory on Saturday night, snapping a four-match winless streak and handing New York its first loss at Red Bull Arena.

Montero had been benched after a long stretch of ineffectiveness, but came off the bench and made the Red Bulls pay, beating Mike Petke after collecting a long Brad Evans pass before sliding a shot underneath Bouna Coundoul.

The loss drops the Red Bulls to 5-3 just five days before a battle with fellow Eastern Conference leader Columbus on Thursday.

Here are the match highlights:

  1. A very unimpressive match all around. Though I’d say Seattle deserved the win by creating more chances. I’ll add to the chorus of people who dislike watching Freddie’s antics.

I was surprised at the RBNY line-up and subs. Stammler out on the left wing? Nielsen entering the game late and playing at forward (yes, I know he played in the Open Cup during the week and can play forward) instead of on the wing. Robinson being subbed out when Lindpere was hobbling around the pitch for the last 20 minutes. Just seemed off to me.

  2. Yeah, Seattle didn’t deserve squat. MLS should back up the clock so Petke can take a Jr. college course and learn how to mark his man.

  3. There was no domination by either side in this game but I hate when people say a draw would have been fair. Gald to see Montero score a fantastic goal and hope this gets him on roll to scoring many more. I think a Seattle front line of Zakuani, Montero, Nyassi is going to be too much speed for many teams to stop; don’t know why they haven’t tried this yet.

  4. But “tons of chances” didn’t exist. That’s my point. I don’t know where we’re getting “tons of chances” and 15 shots from. I would say Seattle had maybe 6 meaningful opportunities and NYRB maybe 2. So while I can say, yes, Seattle created more and in doing so merited a result (which I’ve already freely admitted), I’d have to disagree with anyone’s statement that says Seattle dominated, controlled play, “took it to NY” or any other reference. I’m not saying NYRB played great either or controlled anything. It was a pretty even match in my book. Stats don’t always tell the whole truth.

  5. That’s because there are more distractions in the NY Metro area than Seattle, where basically the Sounders fan base is killing time between Stars Wars conventions and Battlestar Gallactica re-enactment plays.

  6. When the reffing is atrocious, the bad calls affect both teams. The problem is Seattle fans only see the calls as going against them because they’re too busy huffing their own fart gas out of their whine glasses.

The call that led to the Montero goal was basically a gift on a silver platter. What little contact Robinson made did not warrant a foul, and most refs would have called back the quick restart and made Seattle take the kick from the location where the foul was blown. Instead all you go on about is how Hall should have been given a second and yellow, Lindpere dived, etc. etc. ad nauseum.

  7. Sounds like there was a potential bomb scare on the major rail line into the stadium. Let’s hope that was the reason they did not pack into the new stadium.

  9. Yes, but since you are from NY your opinion clearly doesn’t matter as you can’t be trusted to judge what you saw objectively. I am sure that Ives will be jumping in here any moment to point this out for people commenting from NY, but I thought I would help out.

But if we are not going to trust subjective opinions, by the only objective measures we have, shots, SOG,corners, fouls, etc. Seattle had roughly a 2 to 1 advantage.

Was it a blow out? No, but if you were only worried 3 times in the game, I was only worried that Seattle was going to create tons of chances and half chances and then give up a silly goal to lose… again.

  10. Yeah, personally there’s a line I won’t cross with legendary USA players. Everyone has their own line, but I refuse to chant something belittling their career. That’s why I kept my mouth closed during the US reject chant at McBride. For these guys, I’d rather just let them know that on this day, they’re going to get stomped and they’re going to cry

And Seattle fans, for your own sake, stop with the everyone’s just jealous of us and we’re like the girl that is out of everyone’s league thing. Starting to think it’s a pattern with you guys ha

New stadium, winning team, and you still cant sell out a home game? Too bad.

  12. +1 with Eric’s comments. I was there too. To me, the first half edge goes to RB, the second half to Seattle (more fire coming out of the break). The glaring problem for RB was the lack of a strong attacking mid to control midfield and feed JPA some decent chances. Around the time of Montero’s goal, JPA was off on the left, with little going on centrally. I hope that a good attacking mid comes in with Henry after the WC.

  13. But at the same token, I think Ives is correct in his assessment. I would say you’re right that Seattle had the edge in shots, SOG and more meaningful attacks… but how threatening were those attacks really? It wasn’t one-touch passing and they didn’t really rip through the defense. I was at the match and can only remember maybe three times where I actually panicked when Seattle was attacking – one of those was on the Montero goal. So yes, Seattle had the edge, but I would call it a very minimal edge. But credit definitely has to go to them for coming in and getting a result.

  14. I think it’s pretty straight-forward. NYRB had the better possession, but Seattle actually created a few scoring opportunities. Based on that, I guess you could say Seattle deserved the win, but I think a draw would have been a more fair result. Neither team really stood out with any phenomenal play. I saw the shots stat up above at 15-8. I don’t know what constitutes a “shot” these days, but those numbers seem a little inflated.

    Other notes:
–Ljungberg does whine way too much
–Angel might as well be playing in a wheelchair
–Nielson needs to be starting soon
–Thought the Kasey Keller chants were classless (the guy served our country proud and was clutch for the USMNT and that’s how you treat him? I’m all for getting at the other team’s players, but show a little intelligence)

  15. If you’d seen more than one Seattle game this year, you would know why we “bitch”. The reffing has been atrocious in several games…directly affecting the outcome and taking points away. Yeah, Freddie whines more than I’d prefer, but he gets brutalized ten times for every time he “dives”.

  16. Ives,

I love you and the site. Seriously, its amazing. But the “you’re from Seattle so I wouldn’t expect you to view the match objectively” is silly. You clearly go out of your way to convince people that you’re not a homer for the NJRB (which I don’t think you are), but without a thought you’ll accuse someone from Seattle of the same. The Sounders clearly had the edge on shots, SOGs, and stringing together decent attacks. Night and day different than the garbage they brought to the pitch last Saturday. That being said I am a Sounders fan so it clearly means that I can’t tell what’s what and view things objectively.

(SBI-Stan, I know you’re a regular and respect your views, but you’re going to sit there and tell me people who are fans of their own teams don’t often view things in a skewed manner? Don’t inflate the positives of their teams while overlooking the negatives? You don’t think fans watching their favorite team on a home-team broadcast aren’t going to be pushed even more toward believing how great their team has been by overzealous commentators employed by those very same teams? You say I “accuse” the commenter of that, but that person WAS from Seattle (as evidenced by their IP address) and was clearly a fan.

The same can be said for most fans of any team. That’s natural, and as much as you, or others might want to swear up and down that your opinions of how YOUR team does are completely objective, far more often than not that isn’t the case. That’s not a dig at Seattle fans, or a dig at all, just reality.

The Sounders played a good game and deserved the win, but all the “we dominated” talk from certain Sounders fans is over the top. At least that’s my opinion, and not one I’d expect anyone from Seattle to agree with.)

  18. Seattle fans are all afflicted with Ljungberg’s Disease. Even when they win they still whine, bitch and moan endlessly about the referee.

  19. I will agree that as a Seattle fan it does annoy me at times how much time we spend yelling at the ref. That ref deserved to be yelled at least twice NYRB defender should have been sent off, not a ruthless tackle, but one that is a yellow.

Second time was when forward took a big dive in the box, if the ref blows his whistle and issues a yellow rthen none of that happens, That dive was worse than anything FJ or FM have ever done.

It is hard to say seattle dominated the game, but I don’t think it was 50/50. I was more or less waitig for Seattle to mess something up. The Sounders deserved the 3 points last night

  20. Ives, I can’t recall Keller having to do much of anything that match, though I do recall Seattle having a few chances before the Montero goal. You sure you weren’t blacking out during the match? Maybe you need to get checked by a doctor?

  21. I can’t believe how much Seattle whines. They tug on jerseys every play as well. After the World Cup, NYRB will get powerhouse players to help the offense

  22. after i got back from the game i watched it again on DVR… EVERY shot of ljungberg is him whining like a lil bytch. Not to mention your cute little fans making borderline racist comments about newark and pretty much anything that asks for a beating… but they were VERY quick to apologize… i dont blame them, they are in fact, from seattle.

  23. Ives,
Really? Not clearly better? Just checked the stats. Sounders out shot the bulls 15-8, and SOG was 4-1 in the Sounder’s favor. That’s what Mike means when he says seattle was more dangerous.
However the Red Bulls clearly won in terms of Fouls (18-8). An even match. really?

  24. Why should he be? The Red Bulls are a very strong 5-0-3, it’s very early in the season, and the team is playing far above what the expectations were. With Thierry Henry potentially joining them after the World Cup, I’d say they are in pretty good shape.

  26. Ives,

Sorry, but it was not “an even match.” Did we watch the same game? The Sounders created 3 or 4 dangerous chances and had nearly twice as many shots as the Energy Drinks. New York was also lucky to avoid going down a man after the obvious foul from Hall that was ignored.

Was it a comfortable victory, or a dominating performance? No, but it was a deserved victory. The Sounders were simply the more dangerous side – especially in the second half.

(SBI- Apparently we didn’t watch the same match. To say Seattle was clearly better is a stretch, but you’re from Seattle so I wouldn’t expect you to view the match objectively. There wasn’t much at all seperating the teams, aside from one or two plays, but I’m sure any half-chance or half-decent sequence for Seattle had you on your feet so that’s what you remember. Seattle deserved to win because Montero pulled off a great goal, that’s pretty much it.)

  27. was at the game. good crowd for a boring affair. too bad. once montero got on the pitch i knew we were done.

the supporters were on fire last night! i loved the “frie-dels back-up” and “f#$% se-at-tle” chants.

fun fact: i stood next to Kevin Goldwaithe on the PATH on the way to the game. noticed some tall dude in full red bull gear, turned around and immediately recognized the face.

  28. Actually I thought the ref did a pretyt good job overall. Really only one terrible no call on the body check that should have been a second yellow for NYRB. I didnt really have a problem with the no call on the dive in the box.

  29. What horrible refereeing decision? That NYRB ended the match with 11 men instead of 9 because the ref bottled it twice? Yup.
