What’s next for Charlie Davies?

As the list went up on the TV screen this afternoon, Charlie Davies' absence was immediately noticeable, and for many U.S. fans, devastating.

Charlie Davies didn't make the U.S. national team's preliminary World Cup roster, unable to recover from his injuries in time to be selected. It's a crushing blow for Davies, who had been targeting the World Cup ever since he first climbed his mangled body out of a hospital bed for the first time six months ago.

As tough as it is to accept right now, the reality is that the end of his 2010 World Cup dream is the new beginning of his journey to rebuild a career that showed so much promise just eight months ago. He still hasn't recovered fully from all his injuries, but he will now have four more months to rehab and rest and take a break from the emotional roller coaster he has been on for the past seven months.

There is plenty for Davies to look forward to, from the Ligue 1 season with Sochaux in the fall, to the 2011 Gold Cup, to World Cup qualifying in 2012 and 2013, to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He is still just 23 and if we learned anything about Davies over the course of the past five months it's that he will give his all to accomplish his goals.

Davies didn't reach the goal of the 2010 World Cup, but you have to like his chances of accomplishing the next set of goals he sets for himself.

  1. I wish there were some way for Davies to be included on the roster even if he didn’t play. The desire and heart he has shown over the past seven months is something all of the boys on the roster could learn from benefit from being around. I completly understand why he was left off the roster and I wish him the best of luck on his road to a full recovery. Looking forward to 2014!

  2. As fans we’ve seen Sacha show nothing at international level since 2008.

He did look good, we had hopes for him, then Celtic did their evaluation on him and said thanks but no thanks, Sacha’s confidence crumbled when faced with reality he wasn’t as good as he thought or as we hoped, Sacha proved he was out of his league chasing Braziians at Confed Cup. and that’s that.

But for a 30man roster slot you’re right it’s not a biog deal, I just don’t want to see Sacha on field in South Africa, that’s beyond his abilities.

  3. As much as this is the right decision for Charlie’s future, it’s still devastating. Who knows where he’ll be at 27 next time the World Cup rolls around or if he’ll ever be as fast as he was pre-accident.

  4. totally wasnt on his radar. same back in Two thousand F***ING SEVEN when bob put him on the roster for copa america.

    so dumb. so, so dumb.

  5. I told you so. He’s not fit. He can’t go. It’s a good decision. So let’s get off the Davies melodramatic stories and concentrate on the players representing the team.

  6. Charlie was an option up until yesterday and right up until he was denied medical clearance. Coach Bob certainly was assesing his situation. Heh, the final list of 23 players is due on June 1 – makes you wonder which marginal players will be cut, who will make it.

  7. we can hope so. but i’m wondering how well the younger kids would mesh with the current nats. I hear that the ODPs are changing direction, and that they are trying to teach the younger players how to play a more attractive style of football (think the touch based styles of south american teams or even clubs like arsenal and barcelona). that would be exciting wouldn’t it: attractive football coming out of USSF?

  8. Big props to CD on his ongoing recovery.

I’d like to say, though, that anyone blaming Bradley for not including is completely off-base and choosing to ignore his VERY valid reasoning.

Best of luck to the 30 + CD.

  9. People needs to stop whining about Davies. After having been in a horrific car crash, receiving extensive injuries, and not playing a mintue these last 5 months due to that, Davies is not ready to contribute, so let us not blame Bradley.

  10. I don’t disagree with you… BUT here’s the difference. Injuries on the pitch may affect one differently than injuries sustained off the pitch. Beaz and Eduardo just were/are not the same players mentally as they were before. That said, CD9 just wasn’t ready yet– has not proved himself in a game situation. The decision comes at no surprise (especially taking into account his lack of med clearance).

  11. Nick might not have been out past curfew, but he was coming home from Downtown Fullerton at 2 am, probably celebrating a good start.

I’m not saying that my decision would have been different from Adenhart’s, and I wish neither accident would have happened. But what i think brother ELAC is getting at is that there are risks and consequences for every decision made. He might not have been the one driving drunk, but he made the decision to be out past curfew.

  13. sacha kljestan and robbie rogers are a waste of roster space and what happened to the no call ups if you arent getting regular playing time with you club??? Beasley fits in that category very well

  14. To be fair, Bradley’s hands were tied with respect to Charlie Davis. Sochaux’s medical staff did not clear Charlie to play so he could not join the national team camp. I am not Sacha’s fan and I don’t think he deserves to go to South Africa, but he has nothing to do with Charlie’s absence from the USMNT camp.

  15. Am I reading right that Zanetti, Riquelme and Cambiasso are not on the Argentina squad. I really don’t think we have cause to complain when there are coaches like Maradonna, Domenech and Dunga.

  16. A shame about Charlie, but it’s a good roster! All it needs are a couple better/mature forwards in there

and a couple wingers, some class right and left backs, another real quality CB, an attacking midfielder, a playmaker, and some equal quality subs.

I am just in a pessimistic mood. Soccer fortune is capricious; a coordinated, cohesive team of great spirit and work ethic can beat the best players in the world.

    We’re hoping!

  18. I don’t mind Davies exclusion at all. I worked in a physical rehabilitation ward at a hospital in high school and I know how long and hard it is to recover from injuries half as bad as the ones he suffered. Even him being a well trained and very fit athlete aren’t going to help THAT much.

My prediction for Charlie will be that he’ll probably not be so good at the beginning of next season. I bet he’ll lose that extra step he had on everyone else and will have to learn how to rely on his guile and cunning more than he does now. He might even end up a better player for it but I’m sure initially he’ll have to do some re-invention of his game. I hope he’s able to do it right.

My hope though, is that by the time 2014 rolls around there will be so many guys from the U-17/U-20 ranks who outshine the likes of Davies that he and the rest (save for Altidore who is a special player) will be hard pressed to earn a substitute spot on the roster by then.

  20. this was a wise decision….there is no room for sentiment on a world cup roster….I wish Charlie the best…he is young!!, and he has his life, which is of most importance, as of 10 months ago even that was in question!

  22. Actually, if it weren’t for twitter and blogs such as this one (which I check 3x per day and can’t do without), no one would have ever thought Charlie would be on the radar for the team. We would have just factored in his injuries against normal recovery and return to training times.

Someone has obviously seen him play, and without his explosiveness there isn’t much point. Here’s hoping he can get it back for the fall – and hey, that might even be an unreasonable assumption.

  23. I am so confused by the sacha hate. Charlie Davies just isnt able to join. It is unfortunate. Yet people are expecting his speed and goal scoring form to magically reappear in weeks after he could actually practice. Sacha didnt “steal” his spot. After the olympics in 2008, people were calling Sacha a budding star. Yet now he is trash. No one here is a player or coach at a high enough level to really understand completely what he brings to the table. (sorry to those who are). Bruce Arena brought his favorites to previous world cups. Bob can bring in whoever he wants. As fans i think we should wait to see what happens before speculating all of this unnecessary hate. After all, can anyone of us even play at a level close to what they play to even be considered for the 30.

  24. Ouef!! Dumbasses!!!
Look the FIFA rule states that those whom are on the provisional roster but don’t make the final 23 are the ONLY ones you can call in to replace an injured player prior to your 1st World Cup match. So whomever isn’t part of the final 23 is still in the mix. If you call CD in and someone goes down and he’s not where he needs to be then we’re SOL.
FIFA doesn’t mess around with this rule. You want inspiration, watch Rocky. If going to the WC isn’t inspiring enough then you shouldn’t have been chosen. I’d love to see CD play but the reality is that no one knows if he’d be ready to play if needed.

Bob’s the right man for the job. Nuff said.
