World Cup: Uruguay vs. Ghana (Matchday Commentary)

Ghana Uruguaylogo

One quarterfinal result is in the books, and Ghana will look to send a second South American nation home when they take on Uruguay today at Soccer City in Johannesburg (ESPN/ESPN3.com, 2:30 p.m.).

It's a bittersweet match for USA fans wondering what could have been, but the Black Stars will look to the support of an entire continent as they seek to become the first African nation to progress to the World Cup semifinals.

Standing between them and history is a top-heavy Uruguay side, a solid defensive side that boasts a strike duo in Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan that few teams can equal. Suarez rose to the occasion against South Korea in the Round of 16, so is it Forlan's turn against Ghana?

I'll be providing live commentary throughout the match. As usual, feel free to leave all thoughts, comments and analysis after the jump. Enjoy the action.

PENALTIES – What an astonishing ending to Ghana's World Cup run. Luis Suarez goes from goat to hero, saving Uruguay with his handball on the goal line. That's all from me for today. Thanks for following along today, and be sure to check back for more World Cup coverage from SBI.

PENALTIES – Sebastien Abreu to take. AND HE SCORES.  Uruguay are threw! Abreu with a cheeky chip, Ghana crash out. What an ending to a World Cup match. That's a gutsy penalty, and Soccer City goes quiet. Ghana players are crushed.

PENALTIES – SAVE Muslera! If Uruguay score, Ghana are out.

————–

PENALTIES – SKIED BY Perreira. Way over, still 3-2.

————–

PENALTIES – Scotti hits it straight down, pressure to Ghana. 3-2.

————–

PENALTIES – Appiah slots home, past Muslera. 2-2.

————–

PENALTIES – Victorino takes, and converts for Uruguay. 2-1.

————–

PENALTIES – Gyan to take. What's going through his head at this point? Perfect. 1-1.

PENALTIES – Forlan to go first for Uruguay. Easily slots home. 1-0 to Uruguay.

————–

PENALTIES – Drama is about to unfold in Soccer City. Muslera vs. Kingson in goal.

————–

PENALTIES – Absolutely monumental here. No Suarez for Uruguay, five kicks each.

————–

PENALTIES – Bigger question now: Gyan will likely have to take a penalty. How will he respond?

————–

PENALTIES – Suarez is off, but Uruguay is still alive. Heartbreak for Gyan. They had a chance to win it with the very last kick of the game. That's some ending to a quarterfinal match.

————–

120th minute – GYAN MISSES AND HITS THE BAR! Going to penalty kicks.

————–

120th minute – RED CARD SUAREZ PENALTY TO GHANA! The ball gets cleared off the line by Suarez with his hand.

————–

120th minute – Ghana win a free kick — last kick of the game before penalties.

————–

119th minute – Close for Boateng! A long throw is headed on by a Fucile, and Boateng just a foot or two away from putting that in the upper corner.

————–

117th minute – If any side is going to win this, it looks like Ghana. Only a few minutes left to do that.

————–

115th minute – Off the line. Gyan does well to win the ball in the box, but is closed down, and the ball ricochets around and almost bounces in.

————–

114th minute – Forlan slices one wide after a rare venture forward from Uruguay. Didn't control or hit that one well, but not too far.

————–

112th minute – Both sides look content to ride this one out to the lottery of penalty kicks.

————–

110th minute – Gyan flashes a header wide after a good stretch of build up. Appiah's cross in not the best, and Gyan was under the ball. Ten minutes to go.

————–

107th minute – Whatever the outcome, the short rest will surely be a problem heading into Tuesday's match against the Netherlands.

————–

105th minute – Last 15 minutes are underway. It's either penalties or a mistake that lets the other in.

————–

91st minute – How much does Ghana have left? They did this last weekend, can they do it again? First half of extra time has started.

END OF REGULATION – Extra time it is. Ghana 1, Uruguay 1. Forlan's strike keeps his side in it, while Ghana find themselves right where they were last Saturday.

————–

90th minute – A bad Prince-Boateng cross ends a promising counter attack. One minute to go.

————–

90th minute – Three minutes of added time. Ghana with a flurry of possession, but extra time looks almost certain at this point.

————–

88th minute – Sulley Muntari comes off for Dominic Adiyah. Muntari the hero at this point for the Black Stars after his long-range strike in the first half.

————–

86th minute – Challenge from Victorino keeps Boateng from attacking forward. Uruguay look the more threatening side, more likely to score in these final minutes.

————–

84th minute – Things should open up over the last five minutes Uruguay pushes forward.

————–

82nd minute – Off a corner, Uruguay hit on the counter attack. But Pereira shoots well over despite having a couple of options to pass to.

————–

74th minute – Stephen Appiah comes in for Sammy Inkoom. Another long Forlan free kick almost causes problems.

————–

70th minute – Ghana 1, Uruguay 1. Into the final 20 minutes — extra time on the way?

————–

68th minute – Gyan takes a free kick, no dip or swerve on it and it's well wide and over.

————–

66th minute – Each team is showing flashes of a goal-scoring threat as Prince-Boateng goes down in the box. Doesn't convince the ref, however.

————–

63rd minute – Ghana looking shakier in the second half. Anyone's game at this point as Cavani can't find Forlan in the middle.

————–

59th minute – Yellow card on Perez for a challenge on Asamoah.

————–

57th minute – Ghana have to keep things together, not lose discipline. Momentum shifting to Uruguay at this point.

————–

55th minute – While Kingson deserves some fault on that, the movement from the shot too much for Kingson to handle.

————–

55th minute – GOAL FORLAN! He's tied it up on a free kick. Pantsil commits a foul outside the box, and Kingson is wrong-footed on that shot.

————–

53rd minute – Ghana break, but Kevin Prince-Boateng's bad pass thwarts the Black Stars.

————–

51st minute – Uruguay looking to get back in this. Haven't look to menacing in the first five minutes.

————–

49th minute – More defensive problems for Uruguay turns it over just outside its own penalty box.

————–

47th minute – Can Ghana's young defense hold up? Cavani goes on a dangerous venture forward after a mis-clearance that Ghana recovers to handle.

————–

45th minute – Second half is on. Nicholas Lodeiro is on, as Uruguay has made a second substitution.

————–

HALFTIME – With Forlan and Suarez, Uruguay will certainly be able to create more chances. Lots left in this one. Without Lugano and Diego Godin, Ghana will have a chance to add to their lead.

————–

HALFTIME – It's a deserved goal from the side that started off looking a bit nervous, but settled in and looked the far more confident team. Let's see what that does to the second half. The loss of Lugano, Uruguay's captain and central defender, leaves them with a lot of work to do.

————–

HALFTIME – Ghana 1, Uruguay 0. And that's the last kick of the first half. Muntari's goal delivers a shockingly, yet somewhat deserved lead heading into the break. What a stunning turn of events.

34th minute – Boateng and Gyan are linking up nicely, almost combining to get the striker behind the Uruguay defense. Ghana seizing more of this game at the moment, putting Uruguay on their heels.

————–

32nd minute – Two chances for Ghana go begging. Uruguay had been the better side for the first half, but the Black Stars can attack swiftly and suddenly.

————–

31st minute – WIDE BY GYAN. Great attack from Ghana, and Kevin Prince-Boateng finds Asamoah Gyan, but the Rennes striker misses wide to the right.

————–

————–

17th minute – Forlan is a man possessed early on, all over the place and winning a corner for his side.

————–

14th minute – Forlan with another long free kick that Kingson punches away and is then fouled by Suarez.

  1. Really, are you all as outraged in the NFL when a cornerback hauls down a receiver to save a touchdown? Just like here, they cannot award the score, you need to convert it. I have no problem with suspending Suarez for the rest of the tournament, it was highly illegal, but I think he would do it again if in the same situation.

  2. OOh the fairness argument, fat and ugly people are going to start suing god because its not fair that they are ugly or fat come on.

  3. and i thought the ending to a soccer game would never be better than croatia/turkey in the euro 2008 quarterfinals…how wrong i was!

  4. How about a rule where the defender, being the last man (behind the goalie) deliberately uses his hands in a bid to keep the ball out of the goal? If the goalie is closer to the end line, the rule would not result in an automatic goal, but if a defender tries to play goalie in place of the goalie, then it should count.

  5. I don’t think refs should be allowed to award goals, but I think FIFA should give Suarez a fitting punishment. They should be able to ban him from World Cup matches–not just international fixtures…say, Uruguay’s next five World Cup matches (or, at the very least next World Cup matches/qualifiers). It’s not often you can say one player intentionally cheated and succesfully denied an opposing team a spot in the World Cup semi-finals. (I know this is ridiculous, but if there were any justice in the world, Suarez wouldn’t be allowed to play until Ghana reaches the semi-finals of a World Cup…)

  6. Please dont post stupid comments, have you seen the refes? how can you give them the power to add goals, Suarez was redcardo Clarked out of th egame and ghana was given a penalty, its not the refs fault that Ghana missed the penalty.

Ref applied the rules and Ghana didnt take advantage, end of story.

    Reply
  7. Sorry, that is about as good as the rule can be. The ball doesn’t cross the line and is therefore never a goal, despite what is fair or should have happened. You simply cannot gives goals that don’t exist.

    Reply
  8. “did you actually SEE the game ’cause there was no cheating.”

    ——————————————————-

Perhaps you don’t understand what cheating is? Either that or you’re a liar. Suarez got red-carded because he cheated. Ergo, there was cheating.

  9. Keyword: about. It still lacks the quality of the absolute, so there is doubt. Since when is any sport of what fairness mandates? That is what makes them so compelling. You try any make it as fair as possible, but perfection is not reasonable.

  10. In most situations, the foul/penalty call is the only thing a ref can do, because the ref can’t know what would have happened if the foul wasn’t committed. You don’t know for sure that the basket would he scored or that the receiver would have caught the ball, etc. Here, you can see the ball about to cross the line and go in for a goal. Fairness mandates that the goal should count.

  11. I am in complete agreement with you. Officials should reward Goals for handballs on the goaline. Should be a plain and simple rule!!
    Unbelievable in my mind.
I’m sick of FIFA rules and lack of technology and extra officials. ESPN has completely shown the disgrace this game has become due to FIFA not regulating the sport properly!!

    Reply
  12. Again, outdated FIFA rules rob a team of victory. Ref should have right to rule a goal that is denied on such a blatant hand ball. I feel for Ghana tonight. Uruguay’s Suarez is now a ‘hero’ for cheating. Ridiculous.

    Reply
  13. No doubt, but this isn’t a Sunday game, not to mention the milions of dollars being placed in bets, which is precisely why a ref can never be given the power to just award goals.

    Reply
  14. On the handball issue, I don’t think they can start awarding automatic goals. At what point on the field does the handball become an automatic goal? One foot in front of the line? Two feet? Five feet? At some point the ref would have to judge whether the ball might have gone in or not. It just doesn’t work. Red card and a PK is appropriate.

And yes, you have got to make those damn PKs.

    Reply
  15. Haha, what are you a puritan? NFL players try and get away with little cheats on almost every play, especially the linemen. Basketball players foul in certain situations. Nothing is perfect, and Ghana had the chance.

    Reply
  16. are you posting any crap you want or did you actually SEE the game ’cause there was no cheating. suarez got red carded and pk. what exactly are you talking about?!

    Reply
  17. Haha, totally different, my friend. Ireland had no recourse. Ghana had the penalty, and Gyan blew it. There is a difference, not to mention the easy detail of defense and offense. Ok, not a great play, but the smart play, for sure.

    Reply
  18. Err…no. Ghana had the chance to win. You can’t miss a penalty like that, sorry. Just like in basketball, if you are up three, the smart play is to foul the man and make him shoot free throws and not a three pointer. Suarez made the smart play, was justly punished, and Ghana failed.

    Reply
  19. How is this much different than fouling kobe bryant with seconds to go? Do you want to call goal tending? The refs can barely see if the ball goes past the line. IMO the hand was uneccesary looked to be goin to his head.

    Reply
  20. stop. It’s not like he got away with it. He got a red card and a PK was awarded. Not his fault that Gyan choked and skied the PK into the stands.

    Reply
  21. As said a few comments up… what a horrible failure the rules create for this game. That was not just any hand ball, that was a cheat, a steal or whatever you want to call it. It simply should be a goal.

Suarez has to be instantly going from most hated man to most loved by his country. I guess that was the most professional red card you could ever make.

    Reply
  22. Apparently, the USA blew it by not blatantly cheating. They should have just used their hands to knock the ball away from Gyan.

    Reply
  23. Lets not be ridiculous. Refs should never be given the power to add goals that haven’t actually been scored. Think about what you are saying.

    Reply
  24. Maybe if they spent less time training how to fake injuries by rolling on the ground and more time training penalties they might have gone through.

    Reply
  25. wow these guys are celebrating Ghana’s exit ha ha Frauds. Uruguay shouldn’t even celebrate the escaped through cheating . hand ball off the line. if it was Henry we wouldn’t hear the end of it.

    Reply
  26. Great play? I guess you were praising Thierry Henry’s handball to set up the winning goal to push France into the Cup.Great play! All praise due Henry. Ireland? Too bad — that’s what you get for trying to play the game honestly.

  27. In the 20 years I have been alive, I have never seen a more thrilling end to a football match in my life. That was amazing, too bad for Ghana, but that will be one for the history books.

    Reply
  28. What about when you take a guy out who’se 1-1 with the keeper. I think that’s called a professional “foul”. Suarez took one for the team. He looked like he didn’t really mean it anyway. When a ball gets launched at you, you catch it. It’s the wrong football, but, he’s a hero now.

    Reply
  29. And new strikers and defenders, but yeah, lets place all the blame on Bradley, because it is his fault we don’t have proper players.

  30. I do feel for Gyan. Hope he can pull himself together after that. Suarez, on the other hand, made the save of the tourney so far.
