The Los Angeles Galaxy will look to rebound from its disappointing mid-week CONCACAF Champions League embarrassment against Puerto Rico when it takes on the new-look Chicago Fire today.

The Fire could unveil newly-acquired playmaker Freddie Ljungberg, who will be looking to keep the Galaxy on its current slide. Ljungberg is still a question mark to play in the game, while newly-signed Designated Player Nery Castillo did not travel with the team.

The Galaxy-Fire match highlights a light day of soccer that also features Mexican club Pachuca taking on Toluca in one of the top Mexican League matches of the day.

  1. This is a pretty baffling opinion to be honest. Even if Mexico is “improving at a better rate”, the ceiling for their league is lower than the United States.

  2. Torres outscored Rooney during his time in Spain as well. Rooney was pretty excellent at Euro04 but Torres also did quite good at the 2006 WC and2008 Euro’s.

  3. ^^^^ The league will never be “the best outside of Europe”. Haha, are you kidding me? Mexico is improving at a better rate. Everything will stay how it is

  4. I know that Phoenix folks are pretty crazy about defending their heat title, but the heat index in Houston, Dallas, and Phoenix are all pretty similar, and Austin is worse (not to mention most of Latin America).

  5. Cervi playing second half for Celtic…and got scored on…..

also does anyone who is watching the game know what this orange university of Tennessee looking “T” is above the celtic logo on the shorts? its really bugging me.

and good work getting way off topic with that random 5 striker thing lol.

  6. You think that Garber is the only one who knows how to posture during transfer season?

I bet if Donovan wants to go, this is Everton’s way of negotiating with the Galaxy and MLS. Offer price too low? Garber says, “We’ll never sell. He is too important.” Counter offer too high? Everton “admits defeat.” Then Donovan’s agent does his thing, Donovan privately informs Garber that he’ll be pissed if he doesn’t get a transfer (assuming he doesn’t want to stay in California), and whaddya know, something happens.

I could definitely be wrong. But it ain’t over until the transfer window closes.

  7. i dont know where you get your information, but Tevez only outscored rooney once, in 07 08 and played in 7 more games with only one more goal

  8. PHX poses obvious heat problems that MLS can’t address at this point. Maybe someday when the sport can sustain a larger park with advanced climate control systems or if Sepp Blatter gets his way with the schedule, but until then, playing soccer in 110 degree heat is not a good idea.

re: STL and the USSF-2 team, what are you talking about? AC St. Louis is still going. The WPS team in St. Louis folded, but let’s not overstate the possible correlation between WPS and MLS success.

  9. The last season was the only season in which Rooney outscored Torres. Torres has scored great goals in Spain and in England. His old club was a struggler yet he kept them mid-table.

Rooney has become a world class striker but hasnt scored in 2 world cups whereas Torres has. Torres though has become super injured a lot in England, he still is better than Rooney.

  10. yeah. I don’t get that. I think if St. Paul and PHX can house a professional team in every other American sports league then MLS should do fine. Also, Columbus is smaller than all of those cities (with the exception of Birmingham).

  11. Well, I’m partial to ATL being a GA boy. St. Louis couldn’t support a USSF-2 team. I think either Miami or Atlanta. I would like to see both, if it could work out in some way.

  12. You think that for an athlete of his caliber 3 weeks off is going to put you that badly out of shape? I’m sure while he wasn’t training with the team, he was doing something. He trained for a month while some of his teammates were off (for the WC).

  14. I was at the game last night. The Sounder were a level better than the quakes. But they need to finish. I know, not an original analysis, but it remains true.

  15. how is Hercules Gomez doing for Pachuca? Please tell me he becomes a hit.

oh and is Dempsey leaving Fulham for Napoli? I kinda liked that rumor. So awesome to see him in Italy.

  16. the 20th MLS team will either be

    St.Louis or Miami or Atlanta.

3 Canadian teams are enough for the Canucks. New York needs to invest in the Red Bulls. Birmingham, St. Paul and Phoenix arent large enough markets.

St. Louis for history and cause its in the Midwest

Atlanta because we need a team in the Southeast

Miami because we know it’d be a HIT

so of those 3, which u think

  17. 18 MLS teams in just 8months. wow. Our league is still on level with those in Scandinavia but id say by the end of the decade, say 2018, 2019 our league will be comparable to that of Russia, Turkey and when we host the world cup in 2022, maybe our league might be the best outside Europe and maybe in 2040, we could have the best soccer league in the world. well the last is pushing it, but we’re on our way

  18. At the start of the season several major soccer websites (including this one) projected the Sounders as preseason faves. Despite a dreadful start, following last night’s win, they have won three in a row in the league, are in Open Cup semis and have the advantage in their CCL qualifying round. The addition by subtraction of The Swede (who had not scored a goal since last June) has me quite excited for the remainder of the season. That is as unhomerish as I could manage.

  19. Please lord tell me that Donovan signs with Everton. If he goes there he will be a LEGEND. If not them, maybe some club in Spain but no to Man City. sure he’ll make loads of money but he will see the bench.

  20. me figures the coach wanted all the players to get some time in. supposedly 21 of BMG players have seen action in their friendlies so far.

  21. He played the entire World Cup. He’s got to be in shape. His coach was probably trying to look at other players. They could also be trying to market him.

  22. He only played the first half. He played well, so he must just not be ready for more than 45 minutes at this point of the preseason.
