Fantasy Premier League: Matchweek 6

NasriReuters

By AVI CREDITOR

Much like in Major League Soccer, most of the attention this weekend belongs to one game featuring two high-priced rosters and teams with high ambitions.

Even though Chelsea-Manchester City might be the match of the week, others likely hold greater fantasy implications.

The blowout potential of some of the this week's fixtures is immense. Arsenal-West Brom, Manchester United-Bolton and Tottenham-West Ham all appear one-sided, and Liverpool-Sunderland, Aston Villa-Wolves, Birmingham-Wigan and even Newcastle-Stoke City all look like they could churn out lopsided results. When the heavy hitters match up against each other, the result isn't always an open game featuring 4-3 scorelines like we'd all hope. For fantasy success, take the safer route and plan around the one-sided schedule this week.

Here are a few more Fantasy Premier League notes along with our captain pick of the week and an SBI league standings update:

UNITED THEY STAND

It's taken some time, but Manchester United is finally seeing some fantastic and consistent returns from two investments: Nani and Dimitar Berbatov.

Nani, who has been in and out of Sir Alex Ferguson's dog house, is quite possibly exhibiting the greatest form of his career. With assists in four straight matches, and a goal and five assists overall, he's become the ultimate catalyst for the Red Devils.

Berbatov, meanwhile, has goals in four of his five matches, including a tremendous hat trick last week, and he looks as confident as can be while overshadowing Wayne Rooney's struggles. Considering Manchester United's schedule over the next four matches (Bolton, Sunderland, West Brom, Stoke City), these two could add some more monster numbers to your score.

AMERICAN WATCH

Clint Dempsey got on the scoresheet last week, and the Cottagers will be looking more his way after injuries to Bobby Zamora and Moussa Dembele have left the team shorthanded up top. Eddie Johnson should be in the mix for more playing time but not for fantasy-team consideration.

Stuart Holden has a tough task ahead of him this week (vs. Manchester United), but he could be an inexpensive option at midfield over the following three matches (West Brom, Stoke City, Wigan).

In goal, Aston Villa's Brad Friedel and Wolverhampton's Marcus Hahnemann will square off against each other, with Friedel being the better play.

As for Tim Howard, Everton's struggles are not helping his fantasy campaign at all. He'll get a crack at his first clean sheet at Craven Cottage. In order to do so, he'll have to shut down Dempsey, of course.

INJURY QUICK HITS

Here we go again. Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas is on the shelf with a hamstring injury. Various reports have him being out up to three weeks. When you selected Fabregas for your roster you likely knew the injury risk involved, so wait it out and keep him on your bench until he is fit again…The Frank Lampard injury saga continues. After seemingly being on the cusp of returning, reports out of England say that Lampard suffered a groin injury in training and will miss at least Chelsea's next two league games…Yossi Benayoun and Salomon Kalou are also out for Chelsea this week…Fulham's Moussa Dembele is lucky to not have a broken leg after taking a terrible tackle from Stoke City's Andy Wilkinson at the end of their Carling Cup match this week. The timetable for his return is unclear…Blackpool defender Alex Baptiste will miss the next 4-to-6 weeks with a knee injury…Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor is questionable after suffering a calf injury in Carling Cup play this week.

LAST WEEK'S CAPTAIN PICK

Didier Drogba, Chelsea (10×2=20 points)

WHAT I REALLY MEANT TO SAY WAS…

Dimitar Berbatov, Manchester United (17×2=34 points)

THIS WEEK'S CAPTAIN PICK

Samir Nasri, Arsenal, £7.2

Nasri inherits Fabregas' role not only as playmaking midfielder but also as the Gunners' penalty taker. Arsenal's home matchup against West Brom has all the makings of another blowout at the Emirates. Arsenal has tallied 10 goals in its two home matches, and although Nasri hasn't put an emphatic stamp on the Premier League season yet, this week gives him the opportunity to do so.

Other options: Arsenal's Andrey Arshavin and Marouane Chamakh (vs. West Brom); Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov, Nani and Wayne Rooney (at Bolton); Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda (at Manchester City); Tottenham's Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart (at West Ham); Birmingham's Cameron Jerome (vs. Wigan); Liverpool's Fernando Torres (vs. Sunderland); Aston Villa's Ashley Young (at Wolves); Manchester City's Carlos Tevez (vs. Chelsea)

  1. I too thought that Nasri was the designated penalty taker, after Cesc. But Rosicky, who missed the game winning penalty vs. Sunderland last week, said that neither Nasri nor Chamakh wanted to step up, so he had to!* I would pick Arshavin over Nasri to run all over West Brom. Look for at least a brace from the Russian.
