Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

AC Milan will look to rebound from last week's Serie A upset loss with a win against Catania today.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic stole the show in mid-week with two goals in a UEFA Champions League victory against Auxerre, but he and the rest of Milan's loaded attack must come through today to keep Milan from falling too far behind Inter Milan in the race for the Scudetto.

Americans Stuart Holden and Brad Friedel will do battle today, while u.S. national team goalkeepers Tim Howard and Marcus Hahnemann will also be in action today.

MLS features some quality match-ups as well, with a desperate Chicago Fire side looking to upset Real Salt Lake and the Columbus Crew facing the Seattle Sounders in a preview of the U.S. Open Cup Final.

  1. Dempsey was decent today and yes he did score a goal. But Salcido was all over the place making great defensive plays and set up the goal which is just as important as scoring it.

You’re favoring Dempsey and I can understand that bias, but if Salcido had scored the goal and Dempsey had made amazing runs all game, come back and helped on defense and set him up for the goal you would still be saying Dempsey motm. But no it’s the other way around. Salcido was the best player on the field, an amazing debut for the Mexican

  2. WTFABREGAS

That’s the funniest/craziest goal I’ve ever seen. Fabregas blocks a clearance from 40 yards out and it flies into the net

  3. “Is it too much to ask to see two American field players on the pitch for the same EPL team at the same time?!?”

If the only criteria is nationality then the answer to your question is 100% yes.

Hughes is trying to win games not win popularity contests with US fans.

  4. Whose post was that in reference to? If anything, it looks like the posts above were critical of bringing in EJ instead of someone else, not the fact that Demspey was subbed off.

  5. Guys relax Dembele was playing well, Dempsey was tired in Hughes opinion. If Hughes didn’t start him, you will all cry “oh the coach hates Americans.” It has been said here before. If Hughes did not bring in Johnson, Americans will complain again. You complain about everything. Obviously Johnson did not play well today compared to last week against Wolves. Relax, the world does not hate American players.
It’s tough to play for any club in Europe. Competition is huge so guys chill, Americans players are not all of a sudden Brazilians or Germans not starting for their clubs.

  6. For those complaining about Dempsey coming off, he’s not really a player who goes 90 minutes and I don’t think he was going to do anything else. Should have been Gera coming on for him though not EJ.

    EJ was terrible

Carlos Salcido man of the match

  7. That substitution alone should clue you in to the fact that the Fulham manager has absolutely no idea what he is doing.

It is a good thing he has some quality players on the squad to make up for his stupidity.

  8. I;m scratching my head, too… and come to think of it, EJ came on for Dempsey in his appearance last week, too.

Is it too much to ask to see two American field players on the pitch for the same EPL team at the same time?!?

  9. Wow that was incredibly classless from Tottenham, not giving the ball back after the deadball.

And now Tottenham are throwing reckless tackle after reckless tackle at Wolves.

  10. Props to Smirking Kitten – Nice call on the Dempsey goal!

Can you call up a shutout win for Wolverhampton and a comeback win for Everton, too?

  11. Everyone concentrate on EJ getting in to this game… with Fulham down a goal and no other forward options on the bench, it would be a really bad sign of things to come if Johnson doesn’t at least make it in by the 80th minute.

p.s. – Anyone remember when he burst on to the USMNT scene scoring goals in qualifying like it was his job? (oh, wait, it was kinda was his job)…

  12. Right, I thought you could change into a blank one if needed but I never saw a jersey change. I didn’t think you could start out with a blank one.

  13. One of the Wolves players has a blank jersey– no name or number. Did he start out like that? I didn’t notice a change of jersey at any point. Is that allowed?

  14. I’ve had the same thoughts… at first I figured they might be trying to do the same thing Veetle does with their plug-in, but I need some trusted confirmation first.

  15. Hey, does anyone know anything about the vshare.tv pulgin. I’m on atdhe trying to watch the bolton game and am being told I need to download this pulg-in to watch it. Just want to make sure it’s a trusted source and not a virus. If anyone has it, please let me know.

  16. Man BL is so much more enjoyable this year then the PL (outside when the big four play each other). This Bayern Munich – Cologne game has been a fun game to watch. Thank god for Gol

  17. Dempsey starting for Fulham with Eddie Johnson on the bench as a sub….EJ played 7 minutes last week….good to see him getting a chance…though as a QPR fan I would have liked to see him the blue hoops (on loan) this year…;) 🙂
