D.C. United to host Ajax in May

D.C. United's strong offseason hasn't been limited to player acquistions.

In the aftermath of bringing the likes of Charlie Davies, Dax McCarty and Perry Kitchen to the nation's capital, United announced it will host Dutch power Ajax Amsterdam in a friendly on May 22.

Ajax is in the race for the Eredivisie title and boasts Netherlands internationals in goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, defender Gregory Van Der Wiel and midfielder Demy De Zeeuw, among others.

It won't be Ajax's first trip to RFK Stadium, though the last one was more than 20 years ago. The Dutch giants tied the U.S. men's national team, 1-1, in a friendly in 1990.

Are you excited about the friendly? Do you plan to attend the match?

  1. I’ll be at PPL Park the night before, so I doubt my wife will let me fork over the cash for two matches in two days. bummer. I’d love to see Ajax.

  2. Crap! I’ll be leaving DC right before this game. Will they be touring the US or are they just coming to DC? Also, I have a feeling they are coming to scout Najar

  3. I would expect a B squad, considering the fact that they play one of the most important games (the final game of the regular season against FC Twente) a week before this game…

  4. Curious what players they will send. A week before (May 15th) they will play the last game (and probably the most important one) of the regular season against FC Twente…Expect a lot of unknown players…

  5. Wow…crazy how much things have changed in 20 years…they came to play our national team…now they are coming to play an MLS side. Bet nobody saw that coming 20 years ago. I can only imagine 20 years from now what things will be like.

  6. This could actually be tougher than the AC Milan game (which we won, go figure). They have so much young, hungry talent that it will be interesting to see how we stack up. Hopefully, it isn’t a total B squad.

  7. Ajax isn’t what it used to be. But that said, I’m genuinely excited to see the match. Especially as a US fan, if any of our USA boys put a good show, a transfer to Ajax would be very promising for the US National team.

  8. It should be a good game, although Ajax is no longer one of the best European teams. I am planning to go the the game if the tickets are reasonably priced.
