I have to say, Monterrey looked very dangerous and threw some incredible attacks at RSL but the quality of the two Monterrey goals were outclassed by the quality of the two RSL goals. Di Nigris’ lucky bounce from slop-in-the-box and a Suazo PK vs. Borchers pinpoint header off a beautiful cross and Morales’ tricky footwork. Yes I am an RSL homer but I don’t see how anyone could argue against this.
And no, I’m not saying that RSL never benefits from ugly goals. Just not this night.
You mean definitely showed the ball hit Olave’s arm. The ball played the arm in a natural position and shouldn’t have been called. There were multiple occurrences of handball by monterrey players that went uncalled.
They said it was injuries and even had an article in El Norte that they might not be able to play against Puebla.
Luckily I got my tickets yesterday
Rio Tinto is already sold out, that didn’t take long, hopefully the season ticket holders didn’t sell out to Monterrey fans.
Reason they did so well? Their gold jerseys 😉
what was up with those early subs?
FYI, it was a handball call, not a whistle for the goalie’s pickup. That would have been indirect, I believe. On replay it showed Olave’s arm definitely hit the ball and redirected it.
The penalty was called for handball. The ball missed his leg and hit his arm which was in a natural position and still shouldn’t have been called a penalty. Pass back to keeper inside the box is still an indirect free kick.
The call was for handball.
awful call for the penalty by the referee. The goalkeeper can pick up a deflection off his own players. It was not a kick back in anyway shape or form.
could/should of been 2-1 RSL.
It means both..
Is that what it means? Google translate told me it means “pacifier”.
Jason Kreis has proved that he is one of the best! I would say that he should be on the short list to replace Bob Bradley when that day comes. Very impressive what Kreis is about to do!
Extra time…..Are you serious, Sven?
overtime and penalties if still no goal
geeze Torado didn’t even get a yellow for choking both CD9 and Benny F. during the Azteca game in 09
ball doesnt lie… the foul leading to that free kick was not even close to a foul, unless you call the foul on the grass that tripped him. But it was a fantastic free kick that was headed straight to the nack of the net.
officiating was average… wasnt terrible but there was some questionable yellow card decisions.
Really? what happens if they tie 2-2?
Mexican colleges have had their own (American) football league since the 50’s. Google it. It’s cool and weird to see at the same time.
should have been a penalty and red car because it was in the area box. it Had to be a salvadorian ref
Gutty performance by RSL. They have the advantage going into RioT. Beckerman yellow was a blow. All the same RSL can win this competition with the tie.
monterrey was robbed in that free kick in which one salt lake defender hit the ball with both of his elbow.
Anybody with me, thinking “El Chupete” (Lollipop) is the perfect nickname for Suazo?
Stuart Mackenzie: Look at the size of that boy’s heed.
Tony Giardino: Shhh!
Stuart Mackenzie: I’m not kidding, it’s like an orange on a toothpick.
Tony Giardino:: Shhh, you’re going to give the boy a complex.
Stuart Mackenzie: Well, that’s a huge noggin. That’s a virtual planetoid.
Tony Giardino: Shh!
Stuart Mackenzie: Has it’s own weather system.
Tony Giardino: Sh, sh, shh.
Stuart Mackenzie: HEAD! MOVE!
Stuart Mackenzie: I’m not kidding, that boy’s head is like Sputnik; spherical but quite pointy at parts! Now that was offside, wasn’t it? He’ll be crying himself to sleep tonight, on his huge pillow.
Haha, totally what I was thinking. Deff got that cheesy 90’s television sound to it.
Clearly, the Mexican league is second rate and Mickey Mouse compared to the rest of the world… Football lines on a sacred soccer ground, what blasphemy!
(Sorry, I just loved those arguments on these boards a couple a years back. Such fond memories of pedantic Euro-fanboys…)
i was thinking the guy that tries to pull Saborio up by his shirt should have gotten something, too. And yes, the “choker” should have seen red, regardless of histrionics.
I noticed the same thing. We would take that as a huge sign of inferiority were it our stadium, so maybe we should all calm down. But yeah, who plays football in Mexico and draws enough fans to warrant a professional stadium?
Gotta agree on the music. It sounds like a Saved By The Bell highlights video from Malibu Sands.
Why the football (American) lines on Monterrey’s field??
hahaha when other players do it it’s called faking….when we do it it’s called “getting the ref’s attention” right?
Brussels sprouts would have weighed him down.
Good stuff from Borchers. Good thing he loaded up on delicious broccoli the night before….
The hands did go around the neck and there was a shove, but Sabo flying like a cannon was more Sabo trying to get the Ref’s attention. The Beckerman yellow was more damaging for RSL, and that one i think could be argued.
He didn’t shove him. He grabbed him and Saborio flew backwards like he was shout out of a cannon.
Sabo had a bit of a clumsy challenge on the ball and their keeper made a meal of it. I wouldn’t argue with the yellow Sabo got for it, but the Monterrey player only got a yellow for putting his hand around Sabo’s neck and shoving him backwards.
It was a yellow for the choker and a yellow for Saborio.
Yikes! What is with that awful music? Concacaf couldn’t get match commentary for the highlights?
I didn’t get a chance to watch the game last night, but, based on the highlights and the 2-2 result, RSL played very well and are poised to qualify for the Club World Cup.
What was the result of the fracas after an RSL player collided with the Monterrey keeper? It looked like a Mont. player choked Saborio, but the highlight cut off before it showed what card the referee gave.
