Must-See Anthem: Portland’s Jeld-Wen Field

In case you missed it last night, Portland Timbers fans sang one of the better renditions of the National Anthem you'll hear, celebrating their team's first MLS home match in grand fashion.

  1. I realize now that my comments seemed to disrespect the late 70s and early 80s which also is the reality of their soccer history. Just saying, the dark ages of the mid 80s was brutal. Thank God we’ve entered the soccer renaissance!

  2. Amazing! Our Dynamo supporters can’t even stand on the same side of the stadium let alone sing the same song. Great job Portland! And that stadium has what no other stadium in MLS has – history. Ligit history. I know that the NW exaggerates their history. I see Sounders fans with banners of 35 years, etc. Well, 24 of those 35 years the teams that played in Seattle were ignored by the public just like in every other city. 2,500 fans in Memorial Stadium and Renton High School Stadium is the reality of Seattle’s history. Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver don’t have to lie and exaggerate to convince the rest of the country that you are doing a great job though. We see it. As for Jeld Wen, great place and great crowd. The team has a ways to go but that is to be expected. How can you not be ecstatic about the future of MLS?

  3. The pitch width is consrtained by the curve on Timbers Army North End. They have the room to widen the pitch everywhere else but in the North East and West corners there is only like a 5 yard space between the corner flag and the wall.

For them to widen the pitch would require doing something to the curve.

  4. It’s a huge factor. The Timbers Army was built over the past 10 years in the back water of Div 2 American professional soccer. What you saw last night was a amplified version of what we have been doing for years. This MLS club is built for the long haul.

  6. Freaking Amazing! It brought chills to me seeing it last night and again with this video. Truly Amazing. I hope they do this everytime and I can’t wait to see the USMNT play there and for it to be done for them.

This is what I’m talking about and thank you Portland!

  8. That. Was. Awesome.

Way to go Timber Army and the club’s owners/ organization for a great home opener in the rain!

So glad I dvr’d that match. Really makes me wish and hope for a MLS team in the southeast though.

  9. I just watched Bob Ryan miss the mark by about 500 miles on Around the Horn. He felt the singing of the anthem was “a civic joke” which is about as stupid as you can get. I don’t know why he felt it was a joke and I’m not sure what he was watching to make him feel that the anthem was sung in jest but one thing is for sure: Bob Ryan is a dope.

  10. Chris you are an idiot. The Star Spangled banner was written when the US and Great Britain were at war, not during the Civil War. It does represent the entire nation, not the north. I’m in the South too and for you to say what you just did is absolutely ridiculous.

The Civil War and all that stuff is a whole other thing entirely.

  11. It was written by a lawyer from Maryland during the war of 1812 which was Great Britain vs. the U.S.A.

And most of that war was fought in the south. Ever heard of the Battle of New Orleans? SSB represents the whole nation.

  12. See Christina Aguilera…if 20,000+ drunken people can get the anthmen right, you have no excuse!!!

    😀

    This vid was awesome, BTW

  13. Dude, the South lost. The war’s over. Let it go.

Besides, this is not a “Yankee” song. Francis Scott Key wrote the words during the War of 1812 (not the Civil War) about the UNITED States flag continuing to fly after British bombardment. Key was born (and wrote it) in Maryland, south of the Mason-Dixon line.

National anthems at sporting events are common around the world. I’m no “America love it or leave” guy but certain traditions are just fine. This is one of them.

And I’m not just whistling Dixie. 😉

    Well done, Portland!

  14. Not bad Timbers fans. Despite only being about half the people we pack in Qwest Field, you still put on a nice quaint little show:) Keep it up and welcome to the league!

  15. ESPN SportsCenter actually showed highlights from the game after their Top 10 Plays segment last night… unfortunately by “highlights” I mean the Sean Johnson screw-up goal and nothing else. At least they mentioned it was the first ever home game for the expansion Timbers….

  16. So how many of the Chicago fans in the stands were just Portland fans in Chicago jerseys? For some reason I remember that happening in the past. All joking aside, its great to see the support.

  17. Not here to piss on the party, but Union supporters have been singing the Anthem before every home game since the first home match last season. I think there are other groups that do it too. I thought it was much cooler with Union and Red Bull supporters sang it together last weekend at PPL. Just saying. Still a cool atmosphere throughout the match in Portland though. Oh and fix the pitch size. too narrow.

  18. Per twellman’s tweet and wikipedia it’s one yard longer than highbury but three yards narrower. (110 x 70 vs 109 x73) highbury being notoriously small.

great atmosphere, welcome to the league.

but next year add four yards each way, you have the space.

  19. I love this.

I remember being in the stands on Seattle’s opening night; to see thousands of scarves held up as the players entered and then hear everyone singing out The Star-Spangled Banner was amazing. It’s been fun ever since, but opening night was unreal. I seriously almost had tears in my eyes. Easily one of the most memorable sports moments of my life.

Cheers to fan passion, cheers to Portland, and cheers to the progression of MLS and soccer in this country, lets keep this thing going!

  20. The anthem at any sporting event reminds me of our freedom. The fact that you can go to an event at any time you choose is something that is not available to everyone in the world. Whether you agree with the government, song, venue, tradition, etc., I think the anthem signifies to everyone some of the freedoms we enjoy and the sacrifices made by US citizens to keep us that way.

If you don’t want to sing, then don’t. Just respect others ability to do so. And bravo to Portland, you guys put on one hell of a show last night. Too bad it came at the expense of my Fire. What an atmosphere!

  21. What a pleasure to watch this game last night! True, at times things were sloppy, but the pace of the game and energy of the crowd made this game a triumph for the league (‘got the magic power…’…I’m so old). I wish more games in the MLS were played at this tempo and received this much oomph! from their supporters. GREAT fun to watch and I was cheering from my Southern California couch for Portland all the way.

Not that anyone is reading this as I’m probably the zillionth person to respond, but I gotta say I prefer the pace of this game with all its slop to some other games I’ve seen this season. Not all games in the MLS are slow, I know. But there is something so much more immediate, passionate and stimulating about watching games at this tempo. I can’t friggin wait for more.

  22. I think it has come from more people being exposed to the game via playing or probably even bigger technology that allows us to see games all over the world.

I also think it is that Portland and seattle aren’t thinking their target market is families. They have both done an excellent job of creating a family friendly environment, but at the same time allowing room for those that want to party at a game.

I think ECS has done an excellent job of hitting on their target audience of people in their 20’s. If I was still in my 20’s I would be sitting with ECS. They and Timbers army do a great job of creating an environment.

  23. Yeah yeah yeah… as a former Revs and Fusion ST holder and now proud Timbers season ticket holder, I reserve the right to be stoked about the progress of the league as I was one of the 4000 on a Wednesday night in 1997, many times in two different stadiums. Take the snark and apply it to the obnoxious tools in Seattle and Toronto, Portland fans have been much more humble so far in my humble and absolutely not objective view.

  24. Great congrats to Portland fans.

This country needs more people that love the game.

The game itself was a sloppy mess though. Neither team can hold the ball in midfield at all. Made for a lot of scoring, but it was not high-quality soccer.

Still, atmosphere kind-of hid that fact.

  25. Great job, Portland. Best atmosphere I’ve seen (and am likely to see) all season. As a Sounders fan, I love it and hate it. The intimate nature of JeldWen beats Qwest any day. Qwest will always feel like what it is, a venue for the Seahawks.

  26. yeah the field size was a surprising disappointment. It looks like there’s plenty of room to make it bigger, or at least I hope so as they can;t go redesign the stadium at this stage I’m sure.
