  1. Thanks. And lest anyone get irate, I wish to reiterate that I’m not throwing stones — a G’s fan doesn’t have much room to do that on this subject. I mean, look at our jersey sponsor — even our hated tenants have the good sense to wear a beer logo, though I think I’d even rather drink Herbalife than Corona.

  2. Not so good with the reading skills, eh? He’s not a Timbers fan (he supports the Galaxy). And he was actually making the same point you were trying to by the end of your rant. Only his was actually relevant to the comment he was replying to.

  3. I suppose nobody in Seattle uses wood to build homes.

You’re rooting for the right team, probably only as long as they win.

  4. Nice circular logic. It wasn’t a “lie”. Semantics, lost in translation… whatever a smart person would call it. It’s not like the league looked at Seattle’s first MLS game and went “whoa, we have to be in Portland too.”

Regardless of your crowds, if Portland wasn’t supporting D2 soccer no way they get MLS. What Shittle did was irrelevant for Portland.

Find a new chant. Oh yeah, you really only have one… “Seattle! Sounders!” Laaame!

  5. Of all the things I really don’t get is the Sounders insistence on spewing massive amount of crap all over their pitch like a facial in a bad home made porno.

Look for it tomorrow night in their pre-game stuff. Cannons exploding crap every where.

Is it so we don’t notice your worst in the league pitch which looks like a carpet rem at Carpet Carl’s?

  6. Truly, it is more fun having Portland and Vancouver in the league again. Portland definitely does win in public transportation, though hey; Seattle’s working on it 😛

  7. “The point is, all teams are owned by rich people and have corporate sponsors.”

That’s what I said. Timbers: Paulson. Sounders: Allen et al. Galaxy, as well as lots of other teams at one point: Anschutz.

I wasn’t trying to show that my team was any less corporate than yours or anyone else’s; it is at least as corporate, if not more so, than any other team out there. Re-reading my post, I don’t think it was unclear. I acknowledged that my team, which is Los Angeles, is at least as corporate as any team out there, and I even cited AEG’s and Anschutz’s businesses to that end.

It’s just pointless to worry about it, is what I said.

  8. I can’t believe you just tried to use Hank Paulson’s name to show that you’re team is less corporate than ours.

The sheer volume of WTF could crush the world. The man ran Goldman freaking Sachs. Does that not ring a bell? Have you been under a rock for the last few years? These are the plutocrats that destroyed the economy and made money from the rubble. He’s the guy that steered billions to his buddies while Secretary of Treasury, some of which undoubtedly found its way into his sons pockets…

The point is, all teams are owned by rich people and have corporate sponsors. That’s how the bills are paid. But only Timber supporters would hold up the Paulson family as a symbol of their independence from corporate influence.

    Wow. Just wow.

  9. So the king of Spain lived in Salt Lake City? I remember learning that Spanish explorers made there way there, but I don’t remember them settling the territory. I’m glad people like you are around to teach me how to ignore people’s statements and insert my own qualifications.

  10. I live in Seattle but am a recent transplant. If you live here, though, it’s easy to support the Sounders–their ownership group has done virtually everything right. The hate for the Sounders always intrigues me–in a league where attendance hovers in the 15k range, Seattle manages 36K for every game. Folks should stop bagging on the Sounders and start studying what management has done to make a giant stadium actually feel intimate on game day.
As a transplant I don’t have the visceral hatred for Portland that other Sounders fans do. I will say that the lumberjack with a chainsaw is a pretty ridiculous mascot for a mostly liberal, very PC Northwest City, though. Why not shoot some Spotted Owls at halftime while you’re at it??

  11. Way to just dismiss the fact that I proved what you said to be a lie. Good job, figured you would do this judging from how youve been talking throughout. Portland would never have gotten an MLS team without having a rival already in place against Seattle, although you guys do have a good fan base. The league was never going to expand into Portland first, you needed a team to be in Seattle first.

  12. oh, and the Sounders won the commish cup in 2007, 2002, and 1994. plus 2 USL championships, and 2 A-League championships (what the USL was called in the 90s). so now it’s 7-2. thanks for pointing out how inferior the Timbers are to the Sounders. much appreciated.

  13. the commish cup is the regular season team with the best record. portland has NEVER won a championship, at any level, in any league. nice pat on the back for your good record in two years, tho! you must be so proud.

  14. You miss the point Travis. Regardless of the exact date of the announcement, the decision was obviously made prior to Sounders first MLS game.

“Seattle got fans because it got MLS, Portland got MLS because of its fans.” Deal with it.

  15. Funny that they keep telling you that but I can pretty much guarantee the soccer they were thinking about was the World Cup variety and not the MLS type.

  16. Not true actually, it was announced the day after the Sounders first game. Garber came over to watch the Sounders inaugural game then went down to Portland and made the announcement. Good job making up facts though

  17. Bizarrely enough Sounders fans, your “scoreboard” posts actually validate a lot of the Timbers claims of authenticity. If you say the Sounders are great because of their history of winning you tie your fandom to measurable success. It’s a heartless pursuit. Winning has little to do with dedication to a team. To a love a team, imperfections and all, is what support is about. Go back and look at images of the Timbers Army lobbying city hall during the Stadium debates. Note the gradual increases in attendance even when MLS seemed an impossibility, when Portland was passed over in favor of Seattle in 2008. Some Sounders fans say they don’t care about Portland, that there is no rivalry between these to cities, that Seattle is unquestionably superior. The denial of a rivalry is proof of its existence. The Seattle Sounders were a well-supported NASL team, a poorly supported USL, and now are a well-supported MLS team. Portland supporters never turned up their nose at the “minor leagues”. Portland has loved soccer, regardless of league, in a measurable way. In a way that it never loved baseball. For Seattle, the history is less apparent. For you Sounders fan who there in the minor league days, I commend you but for those of you who hopped on in 2009 and now fling ugly insults at the city of Portland and it’s Timbers – a team that you agree, did exist as a well-supported minor league club (unlike your own) – I look forward not only to watching you lose but to hearing about how it doesn’t really matter (because, for you, it doesn’t and never really has…).

  18. There was only evidence of season tickets, a sponsor, and an ad campaign. Nothing else was available to point at. And convince how the City of Portland’s vote for the stadium renovation rested upon Seattleites. I never saw them at any of those meetings.

  19. Did anyone see that Wall St Journal article on the rivalry? The comments from Flounder fans makes Seattle look insecure and low class.

  20. Yet here you are.

Also, Portland’s entry into MLS was announced BEFORE Sounders played their first MLS game.

I don’t know why Flounders have a difficult time with this fact… oh yeah, prior to 2009 they didn’t know soccer existed.

  21. Hmmmm… so all of those 20,000 – 30,000 people at Civic Stadium videos I see from the 70’s must be faked. Like me ask you, you’re probably one of the people who thought the moon landing was faked too?

I bet you’re all awesome ManUtd/Chelsea/Barca ultras too.

  26. I’m not sure that’s something you want to brag about …

Scum “Hey, we’re in a supporter group.”

Interested Scum “Oh yeah, for which team.”

    Scum “Doesn’t matter to me.”
