Portland vs. San Jose: U.S. Open Cup qualifier (Your Running Commentary)

One Major League Soccer team will be a step closer to the U.S. Open Cup field of 40 by night's end.

The San Jose Earthquakes travel north to JELD-WEN Field to face the Portland Timbers in an Open Cup qualifying semifinal. The winner advances to a final play-in game against the Chicago Fire, where one of the league's two play-in berths in the Open Cup proper will be on the line. Either Sporting Kansas City or the New England Revolution will claim the other berth.

Tonight's game is San Jose's only chance this week to put some bad results in the rear-view mirror, as the club does not have a league game this weekend. Portland, meanwhile, will look to continue its dominance at home. The match will be streamed live on both the Earthquakes' and Timbers' team sites beginning at 10:30 p.m.
