Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

Inter Milan is no longer the reigning European champion, but it can still finish its season on a high note by winning the Coppa Italia.

Inter faces Palermo in the high-profile club match of the day, while Germany and Uruguay highlight the international slate in a rematch of the 2010 World Cup's third-place game.

If promotion battles are more your speed, Huddersfield Town and Peterborough United square off in a battle to see which team will compete in England's League Championship next season.

As for MLS, the lone game of the day should be a good one, as D.C. United tries to break Portland's hex over visiting teams at Jeld-Wen Field.

If you will be watching any of Sunday's games, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action (TV schedule is after the jump):

  1. If anything, I’ve always thought Ives showed a bit more bias to Barcelona than any other team. I’m sure there is an article coming, the man has been in England for a long time and his other writers are probably busy with their respective assisgnments.

    Some people need to relax!

  2. Are you in the DC or Portland area? MDL blacks out the broadcast in the local areas. It also blacks out nationally-broadcast games (the ones on FSC, ESPN2, Telefutura).

  3. And whos Jamal Johnson? MLS has a note up on their site about him – is he one that is up and coming for the US?

  4. Inter takes the Italian cup (yay!). Palermo played well – I think the pink looks pretty sweet in the stands.

I also wanted to say that the more I watch French soccer, the more I like it. Where does it stand in comparison to say, Germany, The Netherlands, and England? Its good soccer imo. Lyon and Marseille are the bigs? or no?

  5. Yeah, Gladbach has made it clear they do not want Bradley around the team. They also shed some light on why he was loaned in the first place, saying he was a distraction and wanted to leave.

  6. Don’t know if this has been discussed on SBI yet, but there are a pair of stories out of Aston Villa that may be of interest.

    1. Villa have released 10 players after the disappointing finish to season, including Pires, Nigel Reo-Coker.

    2. Michael Bradley is said to be making his loan permanent after transfer fee is worked out.

  7. My argument to all of you arguing about bias against Barca is:

Nothing is less interesting than a total blowout.

Barca wiped the floor with Man U.

It was like watching a college team play an NFL team. I cannot remember a Man U. team ever looking like an League One team versus an EPL team yet that is exactly how they looked. What is there to be said?

Barca had 70% possession and I wonder if there weren’t some United players who literally did not touch the ball.

For the neutral it became pretty obvious shortly after the second half started that United weren’t going anywhere. In that sense it was a very boring game. Sort of like watching college basketball games end 38-25 before the shot clock came in.

After the last couple of years of Barca and Spain stories I don’t see what any reasonable reporter has left to write about.

The only interesting story is how is it that Carrick is still playing for Man U?

  8. Exaggeration on the whole picture thing. Ives is also just coming back from England as I recall. I also don’t really see a whole ton of articles on New York. last 10 or so are evenly balanced between the MLS teams. Don’t see too much wrong with that. New York also happens to have one of the best DPs ever on their squad so them getting good coverage really wouldn’t be a huge shock. Ives also happens to LIVE in/around New York if I’m not mistaken, so he’d get a lot of scoops from there. That’s also why he’s getting more correspondents from all around the USA.

  9. This right here.

SBI has turned into nothing more than a NY/Manchester United fan blog.

Even the pictures show the truth. Without fail, every weekend’s “Soccer Saturday” had a picture of Wayne Rooney or a United player.

  10. Haha, I love how you fanboys love to rush to SBI’s defense whenever you feel they’re being criticized. Criticism is all shapes and forms produces legitimacy. Either this blog is a legit soccer site or it’s just a fan blog. You can’t have it both ways.

  11. bro get off your barca high horse. if you look you will see avi creditor as the poster of these articles, not Ives. so STFU!! seriously I rarely comment on here because if the low level of intelligence by most of you pricks. take a chill pill about the champions league recap. I could care less and im sure many feel the same. This website doesn’t revolve around what articles you want.

  12. And all of those MLS stories last night, a follow up for every game, popped out of thin air.

Funny that there is time for all of those stories, but when it comes to reporting the loss of this website’s favorite team in the biggest match of the year, “It’s Memorial Day” or “He’s traveling” or “It’s an MLS website.”

  13. Look at his twitter, he’s on a plane. Knowing Manchester to Atlanta travel, not nj, he would be landing around 3-4 pm. I can be Ives investigative journo.

  14. They should make their own damn blog if they dont like the work Ives is doing. It is probably a travel day for him considering he has been in London this week. Not to mention its Memorial Day weekend. Some people need lives.

  15. if I’m not mistaken, this is an mls first based website which is why I first came here. Barca dominated manhester, in a very boring final. There is your article.

  16. I can’t speak for the US, but globally it’s one of the biggest news stories going. I just saw the press conference live on BBC World.

  17. What are you talking about Monkey?

There was one Fox highlight video thrown up an hour afterward, with no articles and no follow ups.

  18. There was one highlight video put up after the commentary and NO article. No running commentary, and pretty much nothing at all.

    Extensive coverage?

LA Galaxy and NY Red Bull games get more extensive coverage than what happened. Hell, every MLS game last night got more extensive coverage.

  19. Stop looking for biases….there was extensive coverage yesterday including a match commentary and follow up highlights and article following the match. If you have such a problem with Ives and the website then why are you posting on here?

  20. Haha,

I was typing the same thing before my browser crashed from the stupid Groupon popups.

You know that if United had come out on top, this website would be crawling with stories and people. So biased that they don’t even cover the biggest match in football when the team they want doesn’t win.

  21. No Champions League follow up? No story about Barcelona? No story about the most dominating performance by a team in the past decade?

I’m sure if Manchester United won, there would be 3 follow ups and stories within the hour.

This website doesn’t even attempt to hide its EPL bias anymore. Instead you have a dozen stories about MLS follow ups almost instantly after the game.

  22. Do they always play the coppa Italia right after the Champions league? What if Inter had made it to the final again seems like an odd time to schedule it for.

  23. The small amount of coverage regarding FIFA is frustrating. Here, nothing from Wahl, lucky to find anything on soccernet, sky, etc. The comments at Guardian are being moderated to death, but at least they are live blogging it, what’s up? Lawyers?
