The last major international tournament of the summer kicks off on Friday, with the FIFA Under-20 World Cup beginning in Colombia.

Some marquee matchups highlight the opening days of group play, as Argentina and Mexico square off Friday night, and Portugal meets Uruguay and host Colombia takes on France on Saturday night.

High-profile international club friendlies also make their way onto the calendar, with Barcelona and Manchester United playing for the first time since May's UEFA Champions League final and Inter Milan and Manchester City going head-to-head in Ireland.

While the New York Red Bulls won't be playing a league game this weekend, they will be in action overseas in the Emirates Cup, taking on Paris-St. Germain and Arsenal in consecutive days. The more intriguing MLS games of the weekend are Friday's Philadelphia-Colorado matchup and Saturday's Real Salt Lake-Columbus tilt.

  1. Never say over for players under 36, or keepers under 42. All they have to do is play better than whoever the alternatives are. Klinsmann will (like nearly all coaches) select the players he thinks will help his team win. Your or my opinion of that player does not matter at all! Even past USMNT experience will matter little if Klinsmann thinks that player will do the best job for him.

  2. How many players did NYRB bring? Two games in two days? They are competing againts over 300 years of history. Henry is correct. Let’s drop the spending cap.

  3. Fox commentators said it was the “coach’s decision” not to play him and that they had been given no further info as to what that might mean.

  4. Bedoya is definitely going to Rangers (assuming he can get a work permit.) The only question is whether Rangers pays for him to come now or waits until January when his contract ends.

  5. So is Bedoya for sure heading to Rangers? and what about Michael Bradley or Clint Dempsey? They heading to Italy respectively?

  6. Although it hasn’t been mentioned heretofor, I was wondering if anybody has heard officially; Did Klinsmann got his wish with more control over youth development/programs?

After the crash of the US U20’s, going out of WC qualifying to Guatemala, and the premature exit of the US U17’s at their WC, it looks like Klinsmann’s wish for change at all levels should have been granted.
