Soccer Tuesday: Your Running Commentary

The oldest cup competition in the world and the most prestigious tournament in the modern game are on display as the quarterfinals of both the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League kick off this afternoon.

Chelsea take their circus on the road to Portugal as Roberto Di Matteo's men face Benfica (2:45, Fox Soccer). Chelsea's emotional victory over Napoli two weeks ago has given way to the return of inconsistent play and Benfica will look to take advantage. Things could be a lot less competitive when APOEL takes on Real Madrid in Cyprus (2:45,

An emotional fixture is on tap in the FA Cup when Bolton returns to Tottenham to complete the game abandoned after Fabrice Muamba's collapse (2:45 Fox Soccer Plus). The match is vital for both teams as Tottenham looks to get back to winning ways while a deep cup run for Bolton will put a shine on a season defined by a relegation battle. Sunderland and Everton square off in the other quarterfinal replay (3:00, after the two sides drew 1-1 on March 17.

There are also some Championship and League One games this afternoon, so there is plenty of soccer on display.

If you will be watching today's matches please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action.

  1. That would be fairly standard practice, so perhaps. Then again getting silverware is always nice… If it has a prize purse or is easily translated to increased tix merch or ad sales.

  2. Well, di Matteo’s decisions to play Kalou and Ferreira seem to have paid off. Kalou scores, Ferreira just subbed off after contributing ( a bit shakily) to 80 minutes of clean sheet.

  3. I was watching the game in bed, next to my wife. And as that ball trickled in, I passionately slammed the remote down in frustration, only to soon realize that I had struck my wife’s leg. I lost on two fronts last evening.

  4. funny how you just want to get away from the sport following a catastrophic loss like that. Feel the same way. I had to resort to watching old ‘Bama football games to soothe my aching heart 🙂

  5. Given today’s games only desultory attention. Hell, I’m a Chelsea fan and I can’t seem to bring myself to care about this.

Last night was bad. Really, really bad.

  6. My level of care for soccer is so low right now. I’m like in sports depression. I want to watch, I just can barely get myself to care.

  7. Ream on the bench for Bolton, as he was when this game was first attempted. He’s started every other game (including the one sandwiched b/w the first attempt and today’s replay)…wonder if it’s resting certain people during FA Cup?
