  1. He has a morning show on Sirius/xm satellite radio and was out ill part of the last two weeks or so, but I thought he was back.

  2. To be at the very top in soccer you need a lot more than confidence which the US woman and men teams have in spades. What you need is great soccer talent/technique and strategy like Spain and Germany. Being athletic like the US and Britain only helps so much.

  3. He was 65 – heart or cancer?

    per wiki:

He was NASL’s all-time leading scorer with 243 goals.

Named the greatest player in Lazio’s history during the club’s centenary celebrations

    1969–76 Lazio 209 appearances 98 goals
    1976–83 NY Cosmos 213 appearances 193 goals

  4. Wow, what a bummer. Valencia-Levante has Tommy Smyth doing color. I really can’t stand listening to this f’n caricature. Plus, it’s Spanish football so he sounds like he’s sitting there, semi-disinterested and drunk and bitter.

  5. Hard to say that Altidore argues more than many forwards. He’s the freaking Dalai Lama compared to Thierry Henry, to name one.

  6. Let’s hope Jones doesn’t injure one of the USMNT players. Has a yellow already but that was for fouling Firmino (I didn’t see it).

    Where is Fabian Johnson playing?

  7. Well, to be fair, it was no worse of a clip then when his arm was held in the box for no call. Maybe Jozy was just reminding the ref of that?

  8. Altidore clips a Vitesse defender into an awkward spill, then argues about it. Come on Altidore – stop with the mouth. You’re gonna get pulled for attitude (again). Can’t he just play hard, stay on his feet, and let the game talk for him?

  9. Jeez AZ found some leprechauns before this match and spent the entire training period rubbing their heads.

    Nobody is this lucky lol

  10. Details, details.

Who now has possession of the World Cup? Japan.

Maybe the US are World Cup Champions in the court of Dr. Detroits’s opinion. But tell that to Pia and the USSF.

What a steaming pile of horse manure.

So they won on penalties. Those are the rules. If you don’t like it don’t play the game.

  11. Uh, those games were tied and decided on penalties. And just TODAY it was another tie. You are completely wrong.

  12. 1-1 at the half. The manner in which the AZ players are picking up yellows causes concern that they’ll be able to avoid going down a man.

  13. Jozy scores on a header in the thirty-second. Not the prettiest goal, but he did well to get his head on it. Nice cross.

  14. FWIW, very entertaining match between Inter and Genoa. 9 goals; both teams down a man. Attacking stuff from both sides.

  15. Why be so belligerent? Can’t you just comment and be nice? Out of their last 3 meetings, Japan has won twice and just tied today. Japan beat the USWNT July 17, 2011 for the 2011 world cup crown, and they beat them again march 5, 2012 in the algarve cup. So, yes, the USWNT needs to build confidence.

  16. And it’s not just the women. Japan is getting mens players onto higher quality Euro teams than the US at an increasing rate.

  17. The American owner should make some changes because liverpool sure spent a whole lot of money with very minimal results.

  18. That red card to Reina hurts Newcastle. He’ll be suspended for the FA cup match, and if Liverpool won their match 6th and 7th would’ve been Euro spots. If Liverpool lose, Newcastle will have to finish 5th.

  19. You think a team that is 78-6-10 in the last five year’s and ranked number one in the world needs confidence? The team you call the Spain of women’s soccer hasn’t beaten the USWNT in more than 8 years!

  20. Brazil is no where near either the US or Japan in terms of talent – raw or otherwise. It has the best player in the world and that’s about it.

  21. MB on left mid for Cheivo – lots of nice probing & dangerous passes to cutters so far. Open & fun match vs Fiorentino.

  22. Agreed – impressive in such a short time that Japan has transformed itself into the spain of women’s soccer – skillful, possessive, beautiful AND winning soccer. Korea’s are following.

USA is talented, but needs confidence. It’ll come, but confidence breeds patience, skill & play out of traffic, and use one-two touch.

  23. The US was chasing a lot today, and Japan was winning a lot of 50/50s. Japan just played give and go and also chipped over defenders frequently. When Japan pressed up high the US had difficulty building from the back. As usual the US was premature in attack and needed a little more patience. Hope Solo really saved the day in the second half. Bottom line is that Japan is continuing to improve and the US is going to have to match their improvement.

  24. Japan’s one touch passing and possession, pace, and now aggressiveness makes them very tough. I’m not seeing much here to say they aren’t just if not better than the US on any given day. All they’re really missing is a great goalkeeper and a strong, battling striker to give CB’s headaches.

All around play – ill give it to Japan.
All around talent – the US
All around raw talent – Brazil

  25. At the World Cup I thought the US was the better team. I don’t think that anymore. Maybe the US can make some half time adjustments and steal this one. Japan’s possession game is very impressive.
